MAK's campaign log (cont)
Earth Bridge

On the next day, Ilson black hawks the heroes to the Fire Temple and returns to Verbobonc for spell studies. The group uses standard tactics with a silenced forward team doing recon and the tanks rumbling along way behind. The point assembles into assault positions and makes a quick concentrated attack against the southernmost guard room (133). The guards have no chance to react, and are mowed down quickly (three of four point members have sneak attacks...)

The heroes have to think a bit how to deal with the trolls in the next room - the beasts have smelled something and in all probability cannot be surprised. Taito jumps over the trolls and carries the silence further into the hallway to block sound of combat, the others hack the trolls - this time the trolls hack back.

Once two trolls are down, the third runs north to raise an alarm - Leif and Taito in pursuit. Sebastian fires a confusion from his wand at the crossbowmen in the gatehouse - after removing the trolls' heads, also Mac and Zoltan charge the surviving guards. Leif and Taito massacre the readying guars in the barracks (137).

Sebastian hears sounds of spellcasting from the side corridor, and the heroes advance towards Eeridik's room readying themselves for a wizard. Arlainth (who IMC joned the Gate after the defeat of the Fire Temple, in hopes to kill Eeridik and take his place) pops out from behind the corner on the other side of the corridor and fireballs the skulking heroes - all of them evade...

The invisible Eeridik steps out and seeing a juicy opportunity blasts the nicely lined-up group with a lightning bolt... Tac charges from behind him. A full-scale melee erupts. HD purges Eeridik's invisibility, while Mac and Sebastian keep Tac busy - the monk uses spring attacks and stunning to some effect. Eeridik follows up with the next bolt, and Leif charges and decapitates Arlainth. Taito follows the retreating Tac and the two monks put up a fine Hong-Kong spectacle - strikes and blocks are happening faster than the eye can see...

Eeridik blasts Mac with a third lightning bolt and the paladin goes down. Leif saves the day by running back and putitng his axe solidly in the middle of the wererat's chest. He also notices more trolls coming in with a rabid dire bear, but HD manages to block their advance by summoning a few heavenly bulls.

Tac decides that the fight is turning against him and leaps a huge bound over the magic circle, stepping on it before continuing his flight. Seeing the bebilith materialize and the trolls and bear finishing the last of the bulls, the heroes call for retreat. (As do the trolls and bear) The bodies of Eeridik and Arlainth are fetched, not without some risk, to gain some monetary rewards from the expedition...

The group jumps into their bag of holding and Leif teleports them back to Verbobonc. On the next day Ilson does some demon research and goes on a one-man mission to kill off the bebilith (using most of his long-range offensive spells to do so) and gather the remaining loot from the now empty complex.

Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil

Ilson has done some research and comes up with the theory that several clues point to the Elemental Nodes in the old Temple. This must be of course verified, so the heroes teleport to the old guard tower, remembering the secret passage they found while dealing with the hobgoblins.

Ilson files invisibly around the temple grounds, but finds nothing. Insied the tower they DO notice that the underground passage has been recently filled with rubble. Ilson, still invisible, flies immediately to the well on the other side of the passage and does find out that a path has been cleared to the dungeons.

Ilson, in a unexpected fit of courage, recons alone past the ogre guards but is stopped by the trapdoor. A clairvoyance cast later reveals the reason: a large earth elemental is sitting on the hatch, with the stone giant guard further in the corridor. Appearance of Kex the beholder spoils further clairvoying. The heroes have plans for Hedrack anyway, so the old temple is left alone for now.

Cool! So, what happened to Tac? I'm guessing he got away from the Bebelith. Did the Bebilith do any damage to the mines?

That would be more like a portable hole then a bag of holding... Or to be more precise: a sack of holding. O well, it is a matter of description and I personally would never allow such a big opening because of the added dimension to the usefullness of a bag of holding or I would raise the prize of the item.

Re: MAK's campaign log (cont)
Tac made it and ended up in the Outer Fane. The group just recently killed him, along with Heddy and Chymon.

The Bag of Holding entry in the DMG says:
Quote:

If living creatures are placed within the bag, they can survive for up to 10 minutes, after which time they suffocate.

So I assumed it is possible to stuff people in (it does indeed get crowded in a type 3 bag, the inside dimensions are around 5 x 5 x 6'). It is a full-round action per person to get out, so the sack trick cannot easily be used for fast raids, for example. I haven't been too strict about the bag capacity anyway...

We just started using a different rule for teleport that allows for one willing passenger per three caster levels, regardless of weight (got it from a 3.5ed preview somewhere), so the bag has seen less use. Two of the group's clerics have the travel domain as well, so the group has access to several teleports and teleporters.

Operation Hedrack

Ilson and Leif have been planning a strike against Hedrack for several days, the main objective to find out what is going on and where since Varachan warned them of the advancing plans of the Doomdreamers. Buying a scroll of antimagic field for their secret weapon, the group teleports to the statue room and quickly seal themeselves in with walls of stone and force.

When the entire group has managed to wriggle out of the bag of holding, Leif takes a risk and opens the door (his Fort being easily enough to penetrate the forbiddance - IMC the spell extended slightly outside the door so that you had to roll the save to be able to touch the opening gem). Ilson fires up the antimagic when the door is halfway down and the group scampers in - finding nobody. Heddy is not there, or has maanged to escape (plainly rolled % of him being there, he spends a lot of time in the Recovered Temple parading around Lareth...)

The heroes still find what they came for - Hedrack's journal. After leaving some nice and smelly evidence of burglary, te group retreats. Ilson later rents some crystal ball time to check on Heddy - he is furious and is promising riches to anyone bringing him the head of that irritating elf... Ilson is promptly dispelled and thinks himself a dead man.

Unknown to the party Heddy has sent the succubus to spy on them in Verbobonc. The demoness has by this point figured out where the PC's stay and is keeping a constant watch by clairaudience and etherealness. She has been instructed to teleport and warn the Fane when the party starts to boost for a raid.

Heddy's journal doesn't really tell the party anything crucial they do not already know. It does put some urgency into their plans - no ordering of expensive items or learning high-level spells anymore...

At the mercy of women a.k.a twelve seconds of terror

The PC's figure that Chymon is a cornerstone of fane defenses (true), so the next task is to try to take the dragon out. The plan is - surprise, surprise - teleport in, hit hard, teleport out. Luckily the party tries some auguries and divinations before rushing in, and are warned of some "slight" risks - especially concerning darkness. Ilson places a call to Varachan (with clairaudience, V replies with crystal ball) and finds out that Hedrack might have other means of spying than simple scry.

Ilson warns the group silently about possible eavesdropping and starts to formulate a "new plan" out loud, trying to confuse the spy/spies. He clairaudences Chymon's lair and gets an invitation for dinner from the dragon, but hears no troops stomping nor anything else suspicious. Fully aware that they might be heading to an ambush, the PC's (Ilson, Leif, HD and Mac) go ahead with the original plan. Mac is reduced to fit him into the load limit of a single teleport and the group is off!

Chymon is waiting for them, having been warned by the succubus and uncovered a deeper darkness. Naquent is waiting around the corner, fully boosted and hasted. HD and Mac have prepared for the darkness threat with daylighted holy symbols, so no free chomping with blindsight yet. Neither side is surprised and Chymon wins the init. She sees a juicy oportunity, consisting of two Small characters carrying the only lights in the room. A crush attack later both HD and Mac are pinned and the rest blinded - the effect is not unlike dropping a bus onto kindergarteners.

Leif tries to dispel the darkness, but with no success. HD landed on top of Mac, so he grabs a hold and dimension doors the pair out - the concentration check is not that difficult after all. The situation doesn't improve much since Naquent jumps into view and dispels much of the pair's boosts in an unsuccessful attempt to put out the lights. She has true seeing running after all, and loathes to waste it - with hindsight it could have been more useful to blast with dimensional anchors first, causing some nice moral dilemmas for the teleporters (who had spell immunities against it)

Leif starts to scream for retreat, so Ilson has to rush past Chymon (and soak in an AoO) to grab HD and Mac and dimension door them out. The room is dark again and Leif gets Chymon's entire attention - he gets almost eaten but survives until following the others out with a dimension door of his own. Leif and Ilson teleport the group back to lick some serious wounds...

Great log so far. I like your writing and even more your party who seems to be thinking more often than not for a change. :)

One question ... what the hell is a 'hero point' ?

Oh, and a second one ? I somehow are of the opinion that "Silence" was a bard spell only ? Am I wrong ? How do your clerics do that ?

Cheers

Hero points or fate points have been discussed in this board earlier (way back... maybe in page 21...) - Each character has a few and IMC they can be used to reroll a bad roll (usually for a save or die situation) or stabilize the character to -9 hp. Haven't had a single death so far, but the guys keep burning the points... I award more for good roleplaying or heroic acts.

Silence is a cleric (and bard) spell. Has been a divine spell in al the previous editions as well. One of the most used cleric spells, I think.

Interlude: Undercover Blues

Back in Verbobonc Ilson tries to rent some crystal ball time to get a heading on Hedrack. IMC the Silver Consortium lets members use a common crystal ball for a hefty fee "Internet Cafe" -style. The attending clerk is appalled at the guy's nerve and slaps him a ticket of 42 000 gp... It turns out that "Ilson" has just less than an hour ago been scrying and left with the ball. The wizard is granted one week to pay or prove his innocence. The ball cannot be magically located within Verbobonc, according to the Guild.

Irritated about the delay, but hardly surprised, Ilson starts to flex his formidable intelligence and finds out several witnesses who saw him walk from the usual inn to the guild. Mac happens to notice that the path carries a hefty lingering aura of evil, from which Ilson deducts that he has been impersonated by a demon of some sort. A little research on demonology narrows the possibilities down to a succubus. The trap laid by Chymon fits nicely to the pattern and the party guesses (correctly) that the same demoness has been spying on them for some time

Ilson becomes even more paranoid, using see invisible regularly and keeps darting glances over his shoulder. The party sets up a temporary camp on a snowy field outside town to hinder potential eavesdroppers. A trap is set: Ilson copies Heddy's journal and lets the others know at just barely spyable whispers how the copy should be taken to a safe place... The party takes the papers to a random innkeeper and asks him to store them for a few days. If Ilson does not come fetch them, the document should be taken to the Guardians at the Gates. The plan is to get the succubus if/when she comes to get the journal masquerading as Ilson.

The wizard himself stands watch invisibly in the inn, others set up watch on the other side of the street. Soon the waiting pays off: Mac detects a nondescript merchant who glows evil as Heddy himself enter the inn - when the suspect goes upstairs to change appearance to Ilson, the real wizard has no longer any doubts. When the fake asks the bartender for his papers, Ilson blasts away with a couple of dimensional anchors, followed by hold monsters. The evil-oozing package is carried to the guild and shackled in a special demon-interrogation cell.

Several charm spells later the demoness has admitted being guilty and even discloses the location of the hidden crystal ball. The guild is satisfied, restoring Ilson's full membership priviledges. St Cuthbert's clergy is notified and a large student excursion arrives shortly to complete their laboratory work on Advanced Fighting vs Fiends...

The heroes resume plans to murder Naquent / Hedrack / Frans.

Interview with the Vampire

Cast recap:
Ilson - elf transmuter/guardian at the gates
Leif - human barbarian/cleric of Fharlaghn
Mac - human paladin/cleric of Pelor
HD - halfling rogue/cleric of Brandobaris
Zoltan - human fighter/rogue
Sebastian - human rogue/transmuter
Taito - human monk

The entire party is back together again and itchy to kick some serious butt. Hedrack and/or Frans (renamed Thrommel, if you remember) are deemed as "suitable" challenges, and the heroes are off with the standard teleport-the-bag routine. They land in the corridor south of Frans' chamber and waste a few rounds in donning winter gear because of the cold. Previous scrying has revealed a chain of guards further in the corridor, situated within view distance of each other. To avoid a full alert in the place, the guards must first be silenced.

On the way towards Heddy's room and the first elite warriors, the group runs into the flesh golems. A silence is quickly placed to block the sounds of combat, while Taito, Sebastian, and Zoltan leave the fighting for the big boys and continue to deal with the guards. The fight is over in just a few rounds, the bodies are dumped in the alcoves of green goo and Hedrack's room checked. Nothing can be heard, so the heroes (correctly) assume Heddy is away.

Now the group can concentrate on their primary target - the vampire. The chamber is protected by forbiddance so only Leif and Mac dare to enter. The tanks are barely able to find their own feet, so sharp-eyed HD enters as well. He does find several conspicuous holes near the ceiling - Mac detects evil (which I ruled does work even in silence) and finds a strong source from below the floor, but probably not strong enough for Frans himself to be present.

The blackguard chooses that moment to ooze in through the holes, salutes the fellow paladin and proceeds to cut him to pieces. Mac must retreat but manages to land a few blows. Ilson dispels the unhallow, at which point HD and Leif start to barrage the vampire with volleys of spells and arrows - Frans decides to retreat in gaseous form. HD is quicker, however, and darts in to seal the holes with a stone shape - Frans must select another set of holes, which places him in the line of fire of the rest of the group. He finally flows out, and the heroes use bunches of garlic, a mirror and some glue to seal in all the holes they can find. (DM comment - gaseous form truly sucks! IMO the vampire was way below the listed CR...)

Almost killing Chymon - to laughter

Oozing with self-confidence and relieved to have both Frans and Heddy off their backs for a while, the heroes decide to pay a visit to Naquent. They cannot cross the forbiddance in Frans' room and must go around through a suspected trap (room 28 with the tentacles). Leif sends a celestal bison ahead, which springs the trap and revelas the tentacles. Leif, Mac and Taito stay with the bull to destroy the tentacles, while the others sneak through and proceed to deal with the guards around Naquent's room.

Ilson uses change self to turn to Frans, the others he turns invisible. The fake vampire then marches down the corridor and gestures something incoherent to the guard - Ilson's acting talent really sucks. The guard salutes, mainly through fear that the ... thing ... might still be Frans. Menawhile Seba and HD have maneuvered behind the two guards and at Ilson's signal the poor bastards are impaled to death.

The rest of the heroes finish with the tentacles and join the group in assault positions by the door. Both Leif and Mac fail to overcome the forbiddance protecting the door opening mechanism, so Ilson has to do it. As the door starts to open Naquent shouts to close it NOW. She will come whe she is ready. The pet spectre materializes to block entrance from mere commoners.

Ilson fires away with magic missiles, Mac turns the apparition and HD finishes it off with a few lucky arrows. Ilson rushes in just in time to see Naquent turn ethereal and sink though the floor. A trap is then set: Ilson wastes one antimagic field to let the others in and deactivate any traps while the place is looted. The heroes then quickly scramble up to a rope trick to wait what happens.

A few hours later, just when Leif and HD are in the middle of playing with Naquent's underwear, a scry sensor pops in. Ilson dispells it after the heroes make a memorable drag performance and insulting session. Still later, when Ilson must climb down to cast a new rope trick, he runs into another scry sensor hich has been waiting in the room. At the same moment the door begins to open...

Ilson hastes himself and dispels the rope trick, unceremoniously dumping the lace panty -helmeted heroes on the floor. Chymon's head starts to show from behind the door and Ile prepares to teleport - but at that moment his brand new captured boots (he explicitly stated he would wear them) start to tap and shuffle and the spell fizzles. Leif and Mac tear the most obstructive lingerie off their faces and rush in to evacuate the prancing elf with a teleport of their own.

HD starts to open his own teleport scroll, but the snickering Chymon is faster and torches the remaining heroes. Luckily HD's scroll survives and he gets the screaming group to safety - albeit still wearing some nice burning lingerie...

The heroes decide to rest for a while (after everybody stops laughing)

Coffin with Pork and the fall of Ampere & Eager

Back in Verbobonc Ilson tries to scry for Frans, and surprisingly finds the vampire in his coffin, so no much help there... Another try is made with several clairvoyances beneath the floor of Frans' room - where indeed lies a coffin. (The players never even considered that it didn't have to be the real coffin...)

So, after packing along garlic, wooden stakes and some knock scrolls the eheroes teleport again to the Fane. Leif, Mac & HD push through the forbiddance and fill all the gas-holes with garlic. Ilson knocks the trapdoor open from outside, and Leif & Mac start to haul the coffin up. In their eagerness they forgot to check for traps, so Leif gets shocked by a glyph... Ilson uses up his antimagic field to safely open the lid - revealing a dead ... pig with imaginative insults painted on its flank.

Leif is pissed to put it mildly, and decides to locate Frans' black sword instead. The spell points to Hedrack's room, in front of which four guards are seen. After a short planning session HD starts off with a silence, his mission to block sounds of battle to Hedrack & co. Ilson keeps the antimagic still on for later use in Hedrack's room. The others assault the guards, but not quickly enough - an alarm is given.

As a result, the elder earth elemental wades in (it has to wade, since it's too tall for the corridor). Glancing at the inevitable progress of the colossus , the heroes start to retreat, firing volley after volley of arrows and spells. Further back in the corridor Leif & Mac stop to make a stand, the others group behind them. When the elemental appears from through the wall, it gets hit by a tremendous double attack of sword and axe (which fail to penetrate DR) and a hail of arrows (that actually do damage). The elemental calmly sunders both axe and sword, and snatches HD's bow for a bonus. While the tanks look flabbergastedly at their crumbled weapons, Ilson fires away with a blast of magic missiles that finally slay the elemental.

Frans and Hedrack forgotten, the heroes head back to Verbobonc to purchase some weaponry...

A Grave Undertaking

The party decides some fresh new directions could be refreshing and heads to the western part of the Fane to slay some ogres. After a short recon, they teleport directly to the guard room (37) and finish three ogres in one round. The ogre guarding the door and one further back the corridor start to run south roaring the alarm. HD flies and Taito (who has just crawled out of the bag) runs after the ogres. HD leaves the ogres for others and fles forward to scout, Taito charges and leaps for a nice flying-kick-stunning-attack-critical-hit and surfs 10 feet on the floor standing on the back of the dead ogre...

Meanwhile Leif, Mac & Sebastian open Ukemil's ex-chamber (which now houses Reokallitan) and lob in some fireballs with Ilson's assistance. The elf continues towards Varachan's door and notices a scrying sensor - the door opens shortly and Varachan invites Ilson in to receive some useful items. Sebastian follows his master.

HD almost runs into a quickly advancing front of darkness (most probably containing Chymon) so he starts to retreat. Taito runs to Varachan's room, as do Leif, Mac & Zoltan (who has had a hard time catching up with the others having been last out from the bag) after killing the trog. Varachan cuts himself and sprinkles some blood on the floor before jumping into the bag, hoping that the cult thinks he's dead. Then everyone dimension doors to the eastern corridor where the elemental was destroyed.

Resuming vampire hunt mode, Leif again scans for the sword, while HD puts fresh garlic to the gas holes in Frans' room. Leif finds his target a little east from the room and below floor level - HD starts to stone shape the way in. Halfway through the vampire is alerted and tries to ooze out, but is stopped by the garlic. HD reluctantly breaks through to a small chamber with a coffin, from where a wisp of smoke pours out and materializes behind the heroes. The vampire is met by such a volley of concentrated fire that he is immediately open for discussions, dropping his sword.

Frans promises his help in taking out Hedrack (whom he doesn't obviously much care for) but isn't in a position to promise much else. Ilson is unmoved by the offer and blasts the poor bastard to gas with magic missiles, immediately afterward disintegrating the coffin. The homeless gas floats around for a while and finally coalesces to a normally-toothed dead ex-paladin. The body is stuffed into the bag (to Varachan's delight) and the group teleports away.

Frans is taken to St.Cuthbert's temple to his ex brother in arms Sir Samuel (a character from original EE, as was Frans). The cleric starts to arrange the formidable task of restoring the paladin back to his former self and offers the heroes free assistance in form of spells. Varachan is introduced to the clergy of Pelor and the Guardians at the Gates, who commence a heavy debriefing session.

Ilson spends a few days to clairvoy the old Temple of Elemental Evil...

the Massacre at the Fire Door

Once again the heroes spend half their spells to boost up and teleport to Chymon. This time the dragon is not expecting them and is hit very badly before she has a chance to retaliate (the 3.0 haste is murder: 2 cones of cold, 4 sneak arrows, around 10 strikes with axe and sword - bad init is costly).

Three minotaur guards charge in foaming at the mouths but are really no match for Leif and Mac. Ogre guards have enough sense to keep away... Chymon drops after just one round of attackin herself. Ilson flies forward to scout and spots Hedrack and the cornugon, he sends HD in and the rogue pumps 3 greater slaying arrows (courtesy of Varachan) into Heddy who bites the dust to everyone's surprise! Ile spots Tac, Aracorny, Firre & Bethe rushing in from the north.

Leif & Mac finish off the final minotaur and heal up a bit, while Ilson disintegrates Firre. Bethe leaps to a side corridor while Tac & Aracorny charge. The cornugon melees with the tanks but is struck baks heavily. Ilson enervates Aracorny, and the elf ranger pulls back dragging Heddy's corpse with him.

Leif manages to drop the demon, who regenerates and re-attacks with the nice whip... This time Leif gets REALLY mad, rages and beats the cornugon to ichory pulp. Mac takes on Tac the monk, who is slain by Ilson's magic missile volley. The wizard peeks around the corner and turns visible (had improved invisibility) when sees Naquent striding towards the fray. HD has just enough time to land on Heddy (Aracorny has run off with the tentacle rod) and Dimension Door out with the corpse.

Leif and Mac do the same with Tac's remains after Ile reminds them that holy weapons bypass the regeneration of devils (Leif pats his axe lovingly...) Ilson goes after Firre's pile of gear before retreating out to the ice of Stalagos. The whole group teleports back to Verbobonc for some recon. Leif doesn't succeed in speaking with Heddy's corpse, and Ilson likewise fails to scry the Black Spike. He does find Tessimon (who replaces Susain Carun IMC) in bed with two other doomdreamers presumably in the Recovered Temple. The action is pretty revolting and the threesome does not seem to mind being watched so Ilson quickly ends contact...

Jailhouse Rock

Ilson scouts the Outer Fane again and notices all the forces have gathered to the immediate vicinity of the Fire Door. Only the hag is left alone in the prison room. That becomes the next target, with an option to continue and "save" Aracorny.

The hag receives the initial volley of arrows but gets even by letting loose a troll and starting to grapple with Leif. The barbarian is rent badly, but Mac has no trouble slaying the troll clawing hos armor ineffectively. HD fires away to the wrestling match and kills the hag.

While Leif is healing himself the others figure out the function of the teleporting dial. The first to be sent up is Reunoux the azer. Renny tells about other prisoners and promises to help. Vister, Maluccus and Athemal are soon free and the lammasu promises to take the rest with him to safety. Vister refuses to go and joins the group in borrowed equipment. Renny briefs the heroes about the activation of the Fire Node and freeing of Imix.

After Maluccus leaves, the group plus Vister continue towards the air door and the (presumably) waiting arrowhawks. They run into the room of elementals, but are only slowed a bit. Mac and Vister stay at the eastern door of the high chamber while Ilson flies to open the door at the other end, followed by Leif and HD (as no arrowhawks are seen).

Start Sam-Peckinpah-slow-motion:

The western door starts to waver and disappears, revealing evilly smiling Chymon (raised), the two drow, Mhunaath the naga and Naquent...

Ilson's jaw drops and the wizard tries to turn. Leif skids to a stop nearly stumbling. Mac's and Vister's faces contort to a scream of horror.

The heroes are nearly simultaneously hit with a cone of cold (Dirass), dragon breath (Chymon), fireball (Mhunaath) and unholy blight (Maracla) - Naquent manages to dispel most of Ilson's boosts and the unconscious elf gently drifts down.

Leif's fire protection and HD's evasion save them, and most spells don't reach the two paladins. The group stands flat-footed and receive more fire and lightning, Leif is also dispelled to near-nakedness.

The barbarian is finally able to act and rushes to get Ilson, dragonfear turning his limbs numb... he gropes after the invisible body and manages to dimension door out just as Chymon's teeth snap shut at empty space and Naquent's silence permeates the area.

HD shakes his head to get burning hair out of his eyes, picks up the paladins and dimension doors out.

The screaming and smoking group pop onto the ice plain of Stalagos and calm down for a while (healing Ilson). The journey continues to Verbobonc where Vister leaves the heroes, still shaking her head...

The Recovered Temple

At this point the party had been growing increasingly bored with the stalemate situation in the Outer Fane, and we agreed (off-game) to proceed to the already divined Recovered Temple. Varachan and Frans the ex-Vampire were busy atoning for their sins and the clergy of St.Cuthbert thought it best to send them to clean up their old lair in the Stalagos. The characters and opposition have been converted to 3.5ED. Thanks for the converson documents guys!

The Real Heroes teleport to the third level of the Old Temple dungeons and climb hurriedly up a rope trick to wait for Ilson to re-study the teleport (Leif's teleport cannot transport the entire party yet). Once the retreat has been secured, the heroes don their long to medium duration boosts and wait for Kex the beholder (whose passing is noticed by the closing of the interdimensional window in rope trick). Once the poor beholder floats past, the strike team instantly drop down behind it. Taito starts off with his crossbow and Ilson finishes the beast off with a maximised fireball - that the elemental fire effects cause to become empowered as well... Ilson surprises himself as violet fire consumes the beholder to ash instantly, and the elf correctly assumes that the presence of Imix has a boosting effect to fire magic.

Sebastian takes a quick look behind the corner, and notices the guardian earth elemental and stone giant approaching to investigate the flash. The invisible rogue climbs to the ceiling and starts taking pot shots at the giant. He has to retreat when the elemental gets closer as the colossus fills the entire corridor. Leif is about to silence the door to the north to keep the ogres from becoming alerted, but changes his mind when he notices that mos of he party would become silenced as well. Sebastian, Taito and Leif take on the giant at the corner and Ilson finishes it off with a magic missile volley, then moves aside as the tanks engage th eelemental that appears from through the wall.

At the same time, the northern door opens revealing a group of ogres, who are immediately bombared by Ilson's volet fire. Sebastian follows his master with a fireball wand and the ogres retreat from view. They are soon replaced by more stone giants led by Dein, whose unholy aura causes Ilson's chain lightning to dissipate due to the SR. Ilson is frustrated and moves south to check for Falrinth and company who he is sure will join the fight any time now.

Meanwhile the elemental deals Leif an Awesome Blow and the barbarian is flung against the far wall. The stone giants bombard the melee with trashcan-sized boulders, only hitting the prone Leif across the back. Leif won't let that stop him, crawls closer and slaps a harm onto the elemental. Mac finishes it off. Sebastian cleverly fills the cooridor with obscuring mist to stop the boulders. Leif and Mac move to the doorway to welcome any advancing giants, the first of which is quickly killed. No others come. The trapdoor that was guarded by the elemental suddenly opens and a host of armored ogres rushes in. Ilson blocks the corrdor with black tentacles who steadily strangle the few first ogres. The rest retreat.

Ilson's clairvoyance warns of intruders in the south corridor. A doomdreamer is approaching, whirling a large sawtoothed falchion (Dugart, who I gave one level of barbarian and a wounding falchion...) Sebastian advances to a sneaking position and the tanks hold back the gorillas in the mist. Dugart stops, stil behind the corner, casts righteous might and steps forward. Immediately he puts up a blade barrier between the invisible Ilson and the tanks further north. Sebastian hides more thoroughly to the shadows by the wall...

Ilson manages to get a hold monster through easily and Dugart is out for a while. Sebastian sneaks closer for a coup. Suddenly Falrinth pops in from around the corner (Ilson has a true seeing on, so he notices the invisible wizard) and points a finger of death at the elf. The chances of surviving are only about fifty-fifty so the dice roll is made with a trembling hand... and a success! Next Leif dimension doors himself and Mac to the other side of the barrier, leaving the giants to themselves. Encouraged by the appearance of more troops, Sebastian takes a risk that the surely present but hiding Smigmal can see invisible and coups Dugart. When Ilson bluntly feebleminds Falrinth on his turn, a faint disappointed mumble and "foomp" of a dimension door is heard when the assassin transports herself to safety.

The drooling Falrinth and Dugart's body are stuffed in the bag of holding and Ilson teleports everybody back to Verbobonc. In the temple of St.Cuthbert Falrinth is healed and he attempts to strike a deal promising to tell everything he knows about the cult in exchange for his freedom. When he accepts a quest preventing any further contact with the cult and the heroes, they accept and are given a quite thorough briefing on the defenses of the fourth level. Ilson makes further inquiries and learns from Hommlet that Kella the druid is spying in the Temple.

The Recovered Temple Revisited

Ilson scries Kella and teleports the group to her location. The two real ogres in the same room are quickly dispatched by the others, while Ilson with is true seeing points out which ogre is really Kella. Ilson goes and locks the door to the stone giants' rooms. Kella feigns some ogre disagreement over a dice game and turns to herself. The druid does not believe the door alone can hold the giants for long and stone shapes the narrow corridor shut. She thinks the Heroes can take care of themselves well enough and files off taking the shape of a hawk.

The party quickly runs to the other roomful of ogres, Sebastian opens the door and Ilson lobs in a fireball - instant barbecue. The hobgoblin slaves cheer. Sebastian holds a pep talk to the hobs (Ilson translates) and manages to raise some stiff anti-ogre feelings. The hobs pick up shovels and picks and start towards the ogre warriors at the entrance waving their makeshift implements and chanting.

The chant dies down when the mob gets closer, and the hobgoblins move to the guard area surprisingly quietly. When no ogres are in sight the ex-slaves quickly run to the corridor leading out. A solitary ogre sticks his head out after the whispered taunts of the rearmost hobgoblins, but gets a lungful of Sebastian's rapier. Others join the melee, Ilson trying to save the best spells for the waiting stone giants. When Trond the barbarian whacks Mac unconscious with just two strikes, the wizards deigns to soften the ogres a bit. Leif wields the saw-toothed falchion won from Dugart, which he learns to be optimized for shedding as much blood as possible. The walls turn red and the ogres are soon all down.

The heroes slowly move towards the racket issuing from the giants' lair and wait for the giants to break through the stone shaped corridor. As soon as there is a small opening, Ilson sends in a fireball, followed by same from Sebastian's wand. Mac rumbles in to the midst of three burning giant carcasses, widening the opening to suitable size with his shoulders. The others follow all receiving an unholy blight from Dein.

Ilson attempts to repeat his earlier tactic, but the giants are all safely within an unholy aura and resistant to spells. Invisible Sebastian engages the closest giant, while Mac charges Dein. Leif casts righteous might. The giants concentrate boulder fire on Mac, whose knees start to shake. Big Leif and Zoltan rush to help the paladin, but at first without much success.

Leif starts to have doubts about the outcome of the battle, but rages and forgets such puny sentiments! And when fully boosted Big Leif rages, the giants start to hurt. Three out of four giants are down in a round, and even Dein gets killed on the following round by concentrated attacks. Leif has enough wounds to kill Ilson three times over (as usual...) and after ending the rage the man is barely conscious. These are moments Leif Erkisson lives for! Even Sebastian has a fit of masculinity and takes a deep swig out of his tropical fruit flavored light pear cider...

The entire level has been cleared and the heroes spend a few hours looting, although Smigmal seems to have picked the choicest treasures out of hers and Falrinth's rooms. Their sacks full the party teleports back to Verbobonc.

Doomdreamers!

The heroes teleport this time to the stairway leading to level four. Ilson turns Sebastian and Zoltan invisible and sends them down to recon (in effect much like a jump sergeant slapping down paratroopers). The rogues know from Falrinth there should be ropers present, but it still takes several spot checks to actually see them... The pair moves into stabbing position as the tanks start to rumble down the stairs and immediately receive several strands. Without the benefit of surprise the ropers pose no great chalenge and are dispatched quickly.

Meanwhile Ilson has placed a clairvoyance sensor into the temple itself and sees the sinister sacrifice ceremony about to start. He flies close enough to try to hold Tessimon (with a doomdreamer level, replacing Susain Carun) who is waving her sacrificial dagger. Tessimon resists the spell, so Ilson shouts at Taito who has just arrived down the stairs to do something about the ceremony. The monk does just that - he runs down the entire 300 ft corridor in a single round, knocking down the candelabra as he stops near the altar (well within the nimbus of light of Tessimon's torch - they have been warned about the altar curtain).

Tessimon seethes with rage, but does not manage to land a touch on the dodging monk with a harm spell. Sebastian and Zoltan rush into the melee just as Taito trips the cleric behind the altar. A prone enemy is free prey, and there is not much left of Tessimon when Zoltan uses his two swords to sneak attack her four times... Sebastian quickly grabs the most valuable-looking stuff and the three heroes head back.

Back in the southern part of the corridor two 5-ton iron statues lumber forward, shaking down plaster with each step. The two tanks take a better grip of their brand-new adamantine weapons, purchased just for this fight, Leif casts righteous might. The golems breathe a cloud of poison gas, but the stalwart divine warriors pay no heed to such odors. The usual bloodbath ensues, where each hit on both sides is enough to kill ordinary mortals many times over. Ilson assists by firing in a chain lightning and slowing down the golems.

Suddenly a translucent hand appears next to Leif and sucks a mighty slice of his life force. The hand flies back to the side room the golem came from and a skinny doomdreamer (Estalion, who I made necromancy-centered, since using spectral hand to deliver cleric spells was just too tempting) becomes visible. Another, deep voice from the room commands the closest golem to stand aside, and advancing Ilson true sees the invisible fully boosted Thuchos Nalred.

The golem obeys and moves, receiving such a series of opportunity attacks that is destroyed. Ilson again successfully uses feeblemind to take Estalion out of the game. Zoltan immediately advances to stab the idiot, but doesn't suspect Thuchos of having true seeing and gets whacked unconscious. Reinforcements in the form of ogre fighters enter the opposite room just as Mac destroys the second golem, and a few manage to reach the melee before Ilson barbecues the rest with a power-fireball. It seems also that two of the ogres were actually greatly-feared rakshasas, the other of which becomes fried despite its SR. The other retaliates with a fireball of its own, but the heroes are of course protected from fire.

Ilson softens Thuchos up with a dispel magic, luckily removing fire resistance, since Leif follows with a flame strike. Sebastian engages the rakshasa and Taito attempts to trip an ogre but finds himself prone on the brute's feet. Thuchos tries Otiluke's resilient sphere on Ilson, but his spell turning reflects it back - the doomdereamer makes his save. One of the ogres knocks Mac unconscious and combat-boosted Big Leif is forced - again - to resort to spells to heal the paladin. Thuchos finally reaches melee just as Ilson is casting another chain lightning but forgets the reach of the large morning star... The spell succeeds and electrocutes a few ogres but Ilson gets a solid hit (which he almost never does).

Sebastian and the rakshasa stab and swing at each other with no effect. Thuchos heals himself, but Leif follows with an immediate harm and Mac stabs the poor cultist to death, running then to grope for and heal the invisible Zoltan. The rakshasa tries to fly away, but Leif grabs the cat out of the air and pins it down long enough for Sebastian and Ilson to kill it. Zoltan kills Estalion as soon as Mac turns his back.

Once the battle is over, the heroes quickly gather valuables from the slain and teleports back to Verbobonc for resting and healing.
