Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
Errm, it's not just the 6d6 fall. It's also the strength draining violet thingies. And if the fallen PC jumps onto the next platform, there might be grell, and Festrath, and - more - falling (oh my).

But if you remember some of the posts about the obelisk, you might want to use them. I especially like the one that mentions man-sized indentations on the top of the obelisk, the obelisk slowly turning around and the hint of giant forms floating about in there (making it the equivalent, of sorts, of the Spire in the Inner Fane).

Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
Ooh! I like it! That I'm using! And that gives me another idea; I'm planning for the campaign to proceede well and beyond RttToEE, with Tharizdun escaping from the far realm, with the PC's having to travel to the far realm to find a way to pull him back in. That obelisk suddenly seems like a natural place for a portal one way or the other... and if it were so, that would also explain the purpose of the thing.

As for the fall to the obelisk.. yea, there's the str drain, and that'll be bad. But I think I'll start that off the second round, giving them plenty of time to get to the next platform, and I wont cut that rope, or it's *splat* but I'll naturally make them think that I will. Hmm... I just remembered that I got a rather large party now; 4 medium sized, one small, and one large (wolf). Will the platform carry all that?

Hey, I got an idea that might be cool: how about having the U ghast crawl from the moat via the underground river into the great chamber, seeking the source of the corruption? Now that might be a nasty fight if they're still on the platform! Or maybe have U come as a rescue of sorts if Festrath or the levitating Ysanlash prove to be too bad... with U madly flailing at the closest target, that happen to be Festrath. But even so, U would then attack the PC's...

Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
You should definitely let the platform carry the whole party. What I did with respect to Festrath cutting the rope, I had him do it about 100 feet above the ground. Then I gave the party the benefit of the wood's DR (cheesy, I know, but it's a buffer). No one got killed, but the sorcerer ended up at -8 which was fun.

The U. ghast in the cave of the obelisk...? Yeah, but you could also have it roar about in the courtyard. That way your group may realize that even after a grueling stay in the icy cold cave, they'll never be completely safe. Never... NEVER!!!

Got carried away there.

Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
Remember if someone falls on top of the obelisk who doesn't have a light source or darkvision they are in a heap of trouble, as there is no way to see where the second platform is at.

You are right to rule that the strength drain would only start in the second round, and to prevent continuing drain, the player would have to move quickly around the top (risking a 200' fall) and yell up to his party members to throw a light source down.

Not to mention the Grell, who if you want to be really nasty can take advantage of the situation and engage the party member.

I probably wouldn't have Festrath engage until he saw the corpse of the Grell hit the bottom of the obelisk chamber. But I did have him fly up, engage at 100' and then cut the rope when the party was all at 70'. That's only averaging 24.5 HP of damage but psychologically it served to really scare the party. Don't forget to scream and rant about the dark sun and heretics invading his abode. ;)

Another idea, if there is room on the platform, have Festrath summon a pseudonatural ape onto the platform with the party and proceed to start bull rushing.

Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
Great session today/night. Journal to come very soon, maybe in another thread, as I've been thinking about splitting my journal and discusssion thread...

The pc's cleared the first room (gnolls, ghast, ghouls) and saved Spugnoir. They then left (bringing the dragon corpse away with them). On the way they had a random encounter and I rolled up two brigands, and ruled them to be goons sent with Dunrat. As the PC's were wearing EEE symbols at the time, the encounter was friendly, and they learned of the mill, the caravan, and a few other things, but not ToAC though the "dreamers" were mentioned. Before the heroes could get more out of them, Chat decides that he's a assassin after all and death attacks Peridan (was closest, and the one doing most of the interrogation) who survives. Chat then escapes using the wand and his great hide/ms scores, while the goons die. A merry chase through the forest then commence, with the monk and druid/wolf searching the area repeatedly but finding nothing. Chat went straight to Dunrat and told all, and the mill got evacuated and trapped. Peridan found Elmo and told him of the various stuff, then they went to the mill, investigated it, and nearly got TPK'ed by the glyph/mill explosion. A council of elders with "Jaroo" present were then set out in the keep, and it was agreed upon that the PC's should take care of the Moathouse and then Nulb/Old Temple, while the city were fortified under martial law and Rufus setting out to get help in Verbobonc. Session ended there.

There's a lot of cool little details I'm leaving out, so stay tuned for the actual update (in a few hours... need to sleep now since its... 06:30...).

Now, what I'm grasping for is suggestions for what to happen. Should Chat seek them out while they rest at the Inn? Where should the cultists in the city go, grove or moathouse? How should I fortify the moathouse (U's corpse got brought about a mile away from the moathouse and then left on the road, so ghastification is out... zombification by Dunrat is something else)? I've discribed the Moathouse as so crumbly there's barely a solid wall left... ooze's dead BTW.

I'm also working on a side quest of a kind in Nulb that involves Wat and the victims of his trade, in a haunted house scenario... I think I got everything thought out there on my own however.

Any suggestions as usual welcomed. Oh, and next session's tomorrow.

I have a request. If you have the spare time and are of the mind then would you write up a brief synopis about your side quest? 3rd Edition is nicely scaleable such that anyone could make use of a cool idea. My players have scuttled through Nulb twice avoiding contact with everything but the ground beneath their feet both times. However, they'll be more (over?)confident if they pass through at much higher levels. It'd be nice to have something extra to think about.

Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
Yea, sure. It'd be in a few days, however, since I'm off to bed now and have a marathon session shortly after I get up again....

It's going to be heavy on roleplaying though (maybe an hour or two of it, YMMV) and then a nearly immortal, instantly respawning Wat in overconfident sneak-death attack mode... however, there'd be constant hints that he should burn for what he's done, so the heroes should have a reasonable chance. But even once the Inn is in full flames, the scenario is not done yet...

On the reinforcing of the Moathouse, note that since Chat spent 2 days in the party and saw all their most important powers, and since Jaroo was in the council meeting, they'll know not only who they're going to fight, but also what their powers are. Suggestions designed towards taking out vital powers (like getting rid of that wolf, at least temproarily, or putting up a silence to counter Peridan's sonic darts) would be great. Oh, but do note I only wants to give them a hard fight, not an impossible one.

Another session just done... a 12 hour one at that, putting our total hours so far playing at 37.

Lot's of developements. A full report to be posted later, after I've gotten to bed (it's 09:45 AM now, but I've been up 20 hours... I feel old now to put it like that :b ).

Also soon to be posted by Trithereon's demand will be my forthcoming sub-quest. I'm also splitting into another thread for the journal, using this one for questions instead.

Ah, well... it's going to be a rather wacky update, since we got a bit tired after awile. A teaser: Aerial combat in the obelisk room with Vacra and Ysanlash on one side, and a half orc monk with a halfling on his shoulders and a elf in his arms on the other, with the bard adding turbolaser-like sonic darts from below into the fray...

I know you are running your own version of Greyhawk, so forgive my nitpicking here, but aren't the Scarlet Brotherhood a bit wacky on their racial issues? Mind you, my Greyhawk knowledge pales to some others I know. I thought the SB believe that the Sueloise (human race) are fated to rule the world and that all other creatures (including other humans) are just slaves and pawns to be used. While they do use hobgoblins and other savage warriors, they do not allow them into the ruling class (and monks are the leaders of their land) of their order do they? So what is the story about his membership of a group that considers him inferior?

Re: The Temple of Pacifistic Evil
Okay... all of that was new to me. How's this:

The Red Hand is an extremist faction of the Scarlet Brotherhood, doing assassination jobs with figths to the death instead of a slicing of a throat. Within their order the members seek to become perfect, and the non-humans are subjected to even greater harassment in order to shape themselves to the perfect being.

In Roneki's case, all the savageness inherant in his orc lineage as well as any trace of worship along old lines have been painfully exorsised, with the rage then being just as painfully inserted back into him to fuel a murderous controlled anger. Within his order, he's seen as more of a weapon than a living being, and can never truly exceed his human superiors no matter his level or accomplishments. His mentor however saw some potential for greatness within the half-orc, and decided to send him out on a solo adventure to a very dangerous location to prove himself to the other masters and his fellow Red Hand followers.

There, how's that? :b

I have no idea why I could not find it! I searched for my user name, for the thread name, etc...

In any way, thank you! Updates coming soon, as I got two giant sessions and one smaller one to write up, and then the side trip to Nulb, and then the group is starting up next week!

In other words, Wo-ho!
