Great writeup, Zagig. Kudos.

I do so suck at naming items. "Shadow-Ban"? (The sword kills, or bans, cratures of darkness.)

Re: Leveled Scimitar
Any other suggestions for a name for the scimitar? It has to be done and e-mailed in about 12 hours. My other ideas:

Galamaskaulat (Whispersteel)?
Nevae Shannae Morenial (figuratively Shadowdeath, literally dark go to tomb)
Erkatam Revanthas (Dwarffriend)
Silath Revanthas (Mountainfriend)

I am also thinking about changing the lesserbane ability from goblinoids to something else. Is it legal to make lesserbane applicable to clerics of EEE? How about followers of EEE? Would that be a good idea? Anyone?

Re: Leveled Scimitar
Well, all of this might have been a waste of time. First of all, no one wants the leveled scimitar. One character is keeping it solely to find the gem and make the sword worth more when they sell it.

Second, they did not like the list. It did not give them as much magic items as the list that I gave to the other two characters. So we added more magic items and they were happy.

Third, I may not use this system anymore after all. They have figured out ways to circumvent this system so they can spend the mundane money on magic. They keep the mundane money until they get to town and spend it on magic items.

Fourth, we suddenly had two people, one guy I work with and another an old friend of one of the players who just moved back to town, express an interest in playing. Two characters per player may be a dead idea all of a sudden.

Does anyone know how to deal with this Diablo mentality? I mean, they are even considering investing in a trading company so they can get a better return on the stuff that they sell. When they are in Verbobonc the next time, they are going to set up a system so that they can send a wagon of stuff to Verbobonc, have it sold, and get the money and never have to leave Rastor. To them, I think that this seems like just another stroll through another dungeon.

While this board is good, it just doesn't feel the same venting on here. Gotta find someone to vent on. Let you know how the game goes tonight.

Re: Leveled Scimitar
Eh, just let them start with proper value of euipment as per the DMG with a max of 1/2 for any one item. It will let them customize the characters how they want.

As for setting up a trade organization. I would say let them do it. Then let them get sidetreked by proper licenses for the organization, the labor union for wagon drivers, employees who pilfer small things from them, highwaymen, maybe the Verbabonc thieves guild wants protection money, etc. The idea is that if they want to play merchants then let them play mercants. If it were that easy to set up your own trade organization everyone with a spare 100gp would do it.

Well, I am going to let them start the company if they want. Most of the stuff they sell will go straight to the CRM because whoever they get to run the thing will be a follower of big T. also, I am also going to start having events progress like the recovered temple starting to get excavated, lareth becoming the champion, etc. At the rate these guys are moving, they will still be in the CRM when big T gets released.

Re: Leveled Scimitar
Ok...regarding "circumventing" the system.

My PCs don't get the "leftover" cash when they are done. They can spend up to that much on mundane and magic, but afterwards they will have however much cash leftover as I decide, and it's usually within a couple hundred GP.

As for not liking the list...that's just whining, and you can tell 'em off if you want. They didn't have the same history, the same good luck, that the others did. Boohoo.

As for the Diablo mentality, I'm genuinely sorry to hear they're taking that approach. You might consider having their first wagonload get hijacked and lost, and see how they feel about it after that. Or have the people doing the selling wind up being crooked, or whatever. Make them realize that there's no substitute for doing it yourself.

Finally, you might need to prod them onto getting serious about the timeframe. If you just "DO" the events in the background, but not tell them, then it does nothing to motivate them and they just get depressed and miserable when "well, we didn't know" is their defense.

I think it's time to send them a Quasit with a scroll. See "Andorax's Sunday Night Campaign", last few posts...I'm using Varachan to prod the PCs into pressing forward.

Then again, my group's not once set foot in Verbobonc.

Re: Leveled Scimitar
I actually like the idea of them setting up a trading company. Of course, if they only do it to get the most out of the system, it sucks a bit, but I think you can use it to your advantage.

IMC, the party helped set up a bunch of gnomes who set up shop after the group killed Tal. They basically gave them a haul of masterwork items in return for getting a better overall price for later trades. One of my players is a lawyer with specialty in corporate agreements, so he set up the deal. Fortunately he's honest, so when I asked him, "Are you screwing me?" and he said, "Not too much", I could believe him. I think they get 65% in stead of 50%.

Now, this trading company gives me more to work with than I'll ever be able to use. They can be waylaid, the equipment can end up in teh CRM, the comapny may be infiltrated or some of the employers can become dependent on Tanbrosh...

But the Diablo mentality sucks and I think using suggestions such as not give them the excess money from tehir starting funds is one that should be implemented right away.

Re: Leveled Scimitar
By the way, while we're on the general subject.

I have three new 10th level PCs coming in. Here's what I'm tossing in their general direction (along with 7,500 mundane and 7,500 magic to spend each).

Potions and Scrolls:

Potion of Blur
Potion of Cure Serious Wounds
2 Potions of Invisibility
5 Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds
3 scrolls of Summon Swarm

Other Charged/Limited use items:

2 Undiminished Stars (one-time Death Ward, auto-activate)
Candle of Cheerful Burning (Hypnotic Pattern 2d4+3HD, DC 13, 1 hour)
Flask of Soverign Glue
4 vials Oil of Slipperiness
Chime of Opening (33)

Staff of Storms (10 charges): Level 12
Call Lightning (1 charge)
Control Winds (1 charge)
Control Weather (2 charges)

Staff of Swarming Insects (8 charges): Level 9
Summon Swarm (1 charge)
Insect Plague (2 charges)

Weapons and Armor (assume they are sized according to wielder's preference/needs):

+1 Quarterstaff
+2 Scimitar
+1 Dwarven Waraxe
+1 Sling
+2 Longsword
+1 Ghost Touch Longsword
+2 Plate Mail
+1 Leather Armor
+2 Large Wooden Shield

Other Permanent Items:

Bracers of Armor +1
Cloak of Resistance +1
Cloak of Resistance +1
Cloak of Resistance +2
Amulet of Natural Armor +2
Ring of Protection +1
Helm of Comprehending Languages and Reading Magic
Vest of Escape
Glove of Storing
Eye Patch of See Invisibility (-2 to spot, search, missile attacks while worn)
Horn of Goodness/Evil
Dusty Rose Ioun Stone
Ring of Swimming
Helm of Hearne (Helm with a deer's head mounted upon it. Allows Wild Shape 1/day into deer form)

Mostly, it's drawn from a series of WotC "Cliffhangers" adventures. I made a few minor alterations here and there (you can't have a Wand of Control Weather, for example, so I created the Staff of Storms). I also swapped out the types of weapons a bit (the 3 new PCs consist of two druids and an ogre fighter), and tacked on the Helm of Hearne, as it was an item I was going to give to an earlier druid PC, and I think it "fits".

Re: Leveled Scimitar
Thanks for the help and support guys. I really appreciate it.

Andorax, that list is huge!! Do they get everything off that list? Also, we have agreed to stick to 3E background adventures only. It makes my life and theirs easier. Should solve the "not enough equipment" problem.:rolleyes

For motivation, I added a little elemental glitch last game session (see Zagig's Funhouse). It got everyone thinking, at least, although they don't know what it means. I think that I am going to have to hit them with the clue bat harder. I don't want to send them a note from Varchan yet, because I don't think that they are seen to be that dangerous yet.

Some months ago, someone suggested another adventuring party as a way to motivate the party. I am probably going to implement this next game session as the party is going back to Rastor at that time.

As for the trading company, the party wants to do it in the future. When I got excited about the idea, though, they didn't think that was good. They are going to store treasure in Rastor, though, and have it shipped to a contact that they already have in Verbobonc. Pelizar and Muristan refuse to return to Verbobonc for a long time as they are getting tired of the long runs and having to fight stuff over and over again. Since the party has turned Rastor against them yet agian (see campaign log), Tal will find it easy to sabotage or steal their stuff. They are going to have to deal with Tal sooner or later and I am afraid that they will just kill him outright. Then they become criminals (and eventually murderers when the Tanbrosh addicts die). Any help with this, just in case it happens?

Yes, the list is rather extensive...then again, did you catch where I said it was for three new 10th level PCs?

I grabbed equipment from a sequence of Cliffhanger adventurers (WotC's discontinued adventure freebies) that would take them, roughly, from 1st through 10th.

Re: Leveled Scimitar
I realize that it is for three 10th level characters. However, at first glance it seems large. I did not total it up so this is just an impression.

After looking at the list again, I see that it may be long but it does not consist of a lot of powerful items. What do the characters get to do with the magic items that they do not want? I let my new PCs have half the market value for those items. They can spend that gold however they wish. Is this the way you handle this?
