Re: Wow!
The gate opened into the outer temple area, right beside the passageway leading to the Fire portal. The characters could distinctly hear chants and prayers being intoned from the inner temple. It was only the anguished scream of the Glabrezu that finally alerted the cultists to the arrival of the party, and they were caught slightly off guard, believing that the heroes had no means of planar travel at their disposal. I had decided that they had blown the Horn of Darkness just before the group arrived, but that it would take exactly 1 minute (10 rounds) for the dark nimbus to reach the required dimensions before the orb could be placed within it. Nothing like a little drama - all through this battle I kept mentioning how the black void continued to swirl, and grow.

Imix opened up with a fireball into the midst of the group, catching everyone, but not damaging anyone too seriously. Lareth & Maliskra started buffing themselves. Sandoval led Rend across the outer temple to the far side entrance into the inner chamber while Merinid & Tel moved to the near doorway. Zak activated his ring of invisibility and slipped into the room and Grinder simply charged in, provoking an attack from Lareth, which hit, and then bounded onto the nearest altar, drawing an attack from Imix, which also hit. At least when he got there he managed to land a blow on the fiery Prince! Lareth & Maliskra continued to buff and Imix passed the orb to the Medusa and swung and the irksome Dwarf. Storn, Omar & Merinid were healing and buffing, as was the newcomer Mourel. Tel opted to try a mindblast on Lareth & Maliskra, but it had no effect. Grinder continued to attack Imix, whittling away at him slowly, but surely.

Maliskra tried to use her gaze on Grinder hoping to remove the most pertinent threat, but he made his save. On seeing her true nature revealed, Merinid unloaded a Disintegrate on her, using the second of his three maximizes a day, courtesy of his rod of maximize. This was 148 damage unless she saved, and with a DC of 23 or so she had little chance... Maliskra disappeared in a cloud of blood vapour and dust! Tel decided to make a charge for the Orb, now rolling free on the floor, but he too provoked attacks from both Lareth & Imix, and was knocked unconscious. Sandoval was firing arrows at both the remaining opponents, with little effect, but Omar sent Rend to attack Imix while he tried to dispel some of his magic defenses. Merinid was trying to figure out a way to get the Orb, without getting pummeled, but was not having much luck.

Storn had tried one or two spells on Imix with no effect, so instead turned his attention to Lareth, who was still casting spells on himself. Storn blasted him with a 10d8 Searing Light (remember, I made Lareth a vampire), which certainly caught the champions attention. In fact it prompted him to cast Spell Immunity next, choosing Searing Light & Magic Missile. Whaddya know, but next round Merinid launched a volley of maximized magic missiles, hoping to finish him off... Lareth merely stood there, laughing.

Grinder had continued chipping at Imix, accompanied by Rend, and for a while Imix had ignored them, preferring to affect all his enemies with a barrage of fireballs. However, he finally started to notice the discomfort in his shins and turned his attention to his assailants. He made his full attacks, and with two hits on each of them he killed Grinder & Rend, outright!

Zak had seen his opportunity when Lareth was preoccupied with the spellcasters and moved to attack, using the Undead Bane bastard sword he had claimed from the dead Templar Darkblade.Omar had just slipped into the room and managed to revive Tel, who also moved to engage Lareth. Mourel cast Holy Aura and he too moved to engage the Vampire. Lareth had not fully recovered from Storns casting, and was not prepared for the multiple onslaught. Within a round or two he had been reduced to his gaseous form and had to slink away to his coffin (stored in the Rakshasa's chamber).

That just left Imix, who simply had to survive another few rounds and place the orb into the void. So the PCs tried to maje it as difficult as possible. Tel & Mourel moved to engage the elemental lord, Mourel singing an elven warsong now, to inspire his comrades. Sandoval continued to volley arrows at him, and Omar & Storn bombarded him with hindering spells, though he handily resisted each one. Merinid also fired off a few spells, as well as instructing his familiar, glimmer, to try to snatch the orb from Imix while he was distracted.

Finally, as the void seemed to stop growing, Merinid conjured a Wall of Ice between it and Imix before casting Fly on himself. The prince had to launch a series of blows to hack through the wall, while Tel and Mourel still slashed at his legs. By the time he had broken through the wall, Storn had cast a darkness on the other side of it and Merinid had flown directly between the void and the sound of splintering ice. Imix saw the darkness and, simply assuming that the void had continued to grow, lobbed the orb into the middle of it. This gave Merinid the opportunity, guided by Glimmer's Blindsight to make a grab at it, which he did. They had stopped the end of the world without Imix even knowing!

Imix, however had little time to dwell on it, as he had been greatly weakened and Tel & Mourel were still attacking. Mourel chose that moment to use his Smite Evil ability, dealing 1d8+7+16(Smite)+2d6(holy) damage. Even after Imix's DR, this still did 26 damage... enough to down the wounded behemoth.

And so, they stopped and looked around them, and caught their breath... before the floor & walls started to tremble and the ceiling to collapse in chunks on top of them! They all scrambled, using quick feet or Dimension Doors, and got out. They agreed that the Temple would serve as a fitting tomb for their friend Grinder, first into a fight, and last to leave.

Soon they found themselves outside, standing around a well, in the sunshine, in the Dessarin hills. No fanfare, no acclaim, no indication of the vast peril that the Realms almost suffered. So they started their journey home, Zak & Tel knowing they would not likely even see Waterdeep before they were called to join Chauntea in her eternal garden. And their enemies defeated... apart from a black spike of rock in the middle of a mountain lake, and a vampire who could waft his way through the rubble and destruction, to the night air...

Re: Final Counts?
Last time (12/15) we heard, these were your PCs:

Tel - Human Psychic Warrior 13
Merinid - Drow Wizard 12
Storn - Gold Dwarf Cleric 8/Divine Disciple 5 of Tempus
Grinder - Shield Dwarf Fighter 12
Zak - Half Drow Rogue 5/Harper Scout5/Ranger 2
Omar - Human Druid 12

I'm noticing a couple of changes in characters and perhaps some animals (Rend?). So, just for the record as the curtain goes down,
1) who/what all was there for the finale?
2) how many players want to keep their characters for another adventure?

Thanks!

Re: Finale
Congratulations! :)

"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station

Re: Finale
So, that was it, Darryl? Or will your players tie up loose ends? At any rate, it was an awesome finale and a great climax to a good story. Congratulations, and welcome to the ranks of Those who Finished.

Re: Finale
The final cast was as follows (sorry folks, I should have posted this earlier of course)

Omar - Human Druid 12
Rend - Omar's Dire Wolverine Companion (9HD)
Sandoval - Omar's Cohort, Human Ranger 10
Tel - Human Psychic Warrior 13
Zak - Half-Drow Rogue 5/Harper Scout 5/Ranger 2
Merinid - Drow Wizard 12 (ECL 14)
Storn - Gold Dwarf Cleric 8/Divine Disciple 5 of Tempus
Grinder - Shield Dwarf Fighter 12

And Mourel Seldar - mysterious stranger

Grinder died in battle with Imix and Zak & Tel will be called by Chauntea soon. So those three will introduce new characters. As for the others, well I'll remind them about the Inner Fane, and Mourel Seldar will petition them to join him on a quest, and I'm also gonna ask all of the players to write up a motivation for their character, short term goals, long term goals, allies, enemies etc. and I'll probably build something from there... I think some of them already have ideas for what they'd like to do.

The calm after the storm
Absolutely cracking ending. A fitting end to a very entertaining and enjoyable campaign log. As one of the occasional players, I obviously missed an excellent. Maybe my own group will enjoy it as much :p
Thanks Daryl for a very well done log!!

Re: The calm after the storm
'bout time you showed yer ugly mush again. Can't believe ya didn't stay around longer at Christmas, was raging when I found out I'd missed you... I hope this inspires you to actually update your own campaign log every now and then!

Is your game even still going? When are you gonna be back down this way? Is this finally your last year in college? How do they get the figs into the Fig Rolls?

Re: The calm after the storm
It felt pretty epic and sweeping alright, particularly from the Outer Fane and onwards. We did have a great time (well I certainly did, and as far as I could tell the players did too). I'm glad people enjoyed it enough to keep reading... I know I can be longwinded sometimes. And thanks to you too Monte, for your part in it.
