Re: Session 18 Angels, Giants, and Beasts
We had a guest player that played Sir P., the guy has minimal experience RPing but seemed to have fun. Hopefully he will become a regular. If he becomes a regular he'll probably make his own character. At which point I expect the players will decide which NPCs to drop.

Wahoo! Its Assassin time. IMC I am assuming that Hederack knows immediately when an altar is destroyed. Therefore he has sent out Victor and an Invisible stalker to investigate. They'll bring back a body from the Fire bridge and a body from the Earth temple. Hederack should be able to get some decent information from these. Plus Master Dunrat survived and is in the Outer Fane so he will recognize some of the descriptions.

The heroes are pretty laden down with treasure, so I expect they may go back to Verona (Verbabonc) soon. They also rest in the Dwarven Temple. Its going to be difficult for the Assassin to track them to Verona or find them off guard in the CRM.

However, Bardol has claimed the Amulet from Uskathoth (Inescapable Detection). Due to 3.5 scrying rules and my party composition of very good Will saves, Varachan has had only one successful Scry attempt and that was after the characters made several saving throws (so they knew about the scry).

Since my players are doing quite well at this point I don't think I'll have Varachan warn them about the assassination. However, after the assassination attempt I think I'll do the Imp with the message thing.

Any thoughts?

Re: Session 18 Angels, Giants, and Beasts
If Varachan sees the party doing well, he would not do anything that could jeopardize his position. Therefore, I would not throw him into the mix yet so openly. Perhaps there is a way to send the party a message letting him know he exists.

Do you roll a saving throw for the bodies when your players cast speak with dead? They get a save like the creature would have in life, meaning that the insane clerics with the madness domain get to add their insanity score.

Re: Session 18 Angels, Giants, and Beasts
Yes, I rolled the saves. I can't remember if I made use of the Madness domain power.

Yeah, maybe I'll save Varachan until the party has had a defeat. So, if the Assassin fails (which is most likely) Varachan will _not_ tip his hand. But if he succeeds I'll save him for some later time.

Session 19 The Water Temple Falls
Session 19 The Water Temple Falls

Furio "The Inquisitor" - Human Cleric 7/Auspician 3
WhiteFire "Xorn Fodder" - Human Druid 10 -- NPC
Fifi the Wonder Poodle - Animal Companion
Bardol "The Dragon Rider" - Human Monk 9/Fighter 1
Hem "The Yellow Dolt" Dazon - Human Rogue 9/Druid 1 -- Guest player
Elfaerin Longstrike - Elf Fighter 4/Wizard 4/modified Arcane Archer 2 -- New player(played Sir P. last game)

--- Sept 10 ---
The group has just defeated the Northern Bridge complex.

All the bodies are looted and everyone returns to the Dwarven Temple.

Furio casts summons a Lantern Archon and has it teleport some gold and a message to Thurgeon, their church sponsor, in Verona. The message asks Thurgeon to rent a bag of holding so that they can transport their treasure to Verona easily.

--- Sept 11 ---
A Lantern Archon teleports into the Dwarven Temple and has a bag of holding with it. But the bag of holding is not empty! It has an Elf named Elfaerin Longstrike in it. Longstrike says that Thurgeon has recruited him to help in the defeat of the Elemental Evil temples.

Sir P. is sent back in the bag of holding with the treasure and a list of items to procure for the party.

The party then heads out of the temple area to put up some more walls of stone to protect the Dwarven Temple from the Fire Temple. However, enroute Hem spots a shadowy figure hiding from them. The figure is cloaked in black and has a lilac mask on that is of identical construction to the one found in the moat house. A short fight later and the would be assassin is dead. After the Assassin dies, Hem hears something about 30 ft away. The party quickly tries to surround and find the presumed invisible creature. But the creature eludes them.

Furio erects a few more walls of stone.

--- Sept 12 ---
Furio casts speak with dead on the Assassin's body.
1) Who was your companion? A: An invisible stalker
2) What path did you take to get to your hiding location? A: Northern Bridge
3) What was the Invisible Stalker's job? A: Report details of fight to Outer Fane
4) How do we get safe passage across a bridge? A: The keys or a blessing.
5) Was anyone else sent with you? A: No

--- Sept 13-24 ---
Furio casts Hallow coupled with Aid in the Golem room of the Dwarven Temple.

Sir P. finally finds a buyer within the church for the Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location. The buyer is a Paladin.

--- Sept 25 ---
The party receives their new magic items. Sir P. decides to remain in Verona for the near future.

The party then makes its way to the Northern Bridge complex.

A pair of Owl Bears are encountered just beyond the Northern Bridge area, but these are dealt with quickly.

Exploring further our heroes come upon a lake of water with a small rock outcropping in the center, which completely blocks their way. Whitefire shape changes into a large shark and starts swimming across. About half way across he encounters a very ugly humanoid creature in the water. The others can't see far enough to tell what he has encountered, but its obvious Whitefire is in peril, in fact Whitefire has just made 3 saving throws. Bardol leaps to the aid of Whitefire, in fact Bardol jumps 45 ft into the water(all without magical augmentation). Bardol must also make 3 saving throws due to the horrific gaze of the Sea Hag. Bardol makes his 1st two saves but fails his second Fortitude, but Furio activates his Fickle Finger of Fate power and allows Bardol to retry his save. Bardol is successful on his second attempt. A flying Longstrike and Bardol then make quick work of the Sea Hag. Whitefire explores the underground lake and finds an underground cave with two prisoners. He rescues the prisoners and brings them back to the others. Its quickly realized that these prisoners are in bad shape. Our heroes take the former captives to the Dwarven Temple and leave them in the care of the Dwarves.

The party then returns to the lake and crosses cautiously. Its decided to follow convention and take the left passageway on the far side of the lake.
The nine warriors in the next cave are quickly dealt with. Proceeding further our heroes find a side cave to the left. Fortunately Hem dodges aside, and avoids the illusionary floor. Peeking under the illusionary floor a Carrion Crawler is seen. Longstrike and Hem look under the floor and start shooting arrows at the Carrion Crawler, which starts climbing the wall towards them. At this point a human and a kua-toa cleric appear on the far side. Although the two spellcasters get some spells off none of them have any great effect. Our heroes vanquish these foes and the carrion crawler without much trouble. Investigating the caves where the spellcasters came from yields a dead end.

Moving further into the complex our heroes go through the kitchen. The next room has a balcony with several humans on it which open fire with bows on the party. Bardol again demonstrates his jumping ability by jumping up onto the balcony. He immediately takes out one warrior. Meanwhile, 6 fish like humanoid creatures emerge from the far entrance way. Furio puts the Skum to a stop with a well placed Spike Stone spell. Meanwhile Bardol has grappled one of the warriors and is holding him over the balcony and asks "Do you yield?" The man answers "No" and Bardol drops him to his death. Hem and Longstrike are peppering the Skum and the other warriors with arrows to great effect. Bardol grapples the next warrior in line and gives this guy the same option. He surrenders. The heroes quickly dispatch everyone else. The prisoner is tied up while the party explores the rest of the complex.

Moving further into the complex the group opens a side door to see a small humanoid fish like creature bathing in a pool. Longstrike "Its a baby Kuo-Toa, I try to subdue it". Longstrike successfully subdues to the creature, but Bardol says "This is no young Kuo-Toa, this is one of those demon spawn mephits". Bardol slays the mephit.

This side of the complex seems to be cleared out so the group returns to the lake and advances up the right side passageway. They encounter a Kuo-Toa with large black demon wings. But Longstrike deals a critical hit and the half-demon Kuo-Toa is killed quickly.

Our heroes take the left exit out of this cave but it dead ends in a small cave with a pool of water.

Our heroes then take the right exit and it leads to a pool of water. A platform some distance away can be seen with several Kuo-Toa on it. Hem and Longstrike drink potions of fly. While Whitefire uses his Cape of Mountebank to dimension door everyone else to the platform.

A great battle ensues. A Kua-Toa monk grapples Furio and gives him great consternation. A Kuo-Toa cleric uses Unholy Blight on Fifi which causes the dog to be sickened. Whitefire casts a wall of fire all along one side of the platform. Two Kuo-Toa's blow horns on either side of the altar and summon a huge water elemental. Bardol is enlarged and tries to go toe to toe with the Water Elemental. Longstrike is kept busy with 6 large skum with crossbows in the water. But in the end our heroes emerge victorious.

Re: Session 19 The Water Temple Falls
Ok, so the player from last game looks to be a regular. He made an Arcane Archer type character.

We also had another guy I met through EN World whow up this time. The biggest problem with this player is that he cannot play on Friday nights. So I am not sure how often he will be a ble to play.

Dang... made some big mistakes here. I meant to give all the Kuo-Toa fighters in the temple area pincer staffs, and then they could try and push people into the pools on the platform. Another suggestion I have is to make the platform a floating dock and then people will need to make balance checks on it.

But at least I remembered the Unhallow this time. I rolled and 8, so all the bad guys got 18 extra hp. Helped the mooks out immensly.

Session 20 What Would Pole Do?
Session 20 What Would Pole Do?

Furio "The Inquisitor" - Human Cleric 7/Auspician 3
WhiteFire "Xorn Fodder" - Human Druid 10 -- NPC
Fifi the Wonder Poodle - Animal Companion
Bardol "The Dragon Rider" - Human Monk 9/Fighter 1
Hem "The Yellow Dolt" Dazon - Human Rogue 9/Druid 1 -- NPC
Elfaerin Longstrike - Elf Fighter 4/Wizard 4/modified Arcane Archer 2

--- Sept 25 ---
Addendum to the fight with the Water Temple. Furio was able curse the Kuo-Toa Monk, giving him a -6 Str.

After defeating the Water Temple...

Bardol investigates the green pool of liquid on the altar by putting the haft of his new +1 Glaive in the pool. He quickly discovers that was not such a bright idea. Although his glaive was not damaged the varnish was removed and the weapon could have been seriously damaged.
Hem: "Now who is the Dolt."

Whitefire carefully stoneshapes the platform so that the three liquids flow out of the pools and into the water.

Hem and Longstrike fly back to retrieve a boat from the Sea Hag pool. After they return with the boat everyone hops in, Furio keeps a potion of water breathing in hand, and they row out into the two side caves. The two side caves end up being quarters for the Kuo-Toa. Some treasure is found and then the group returns to the altar platform.

A discussion ensues about what to do with the altar. The group surmises that if they destroy the altar the room will collapse in a cave in. This could prove to be deadly because they would not be able to row the boat out of the way quick enough.
Longstrike: Do we really need to destroy the altar, I mean we have killed everyone.
Bardol: Well, What would Pole do? (WWPD?)
Everyone: Pole would say the altar is evil and must be destroyed.
Its decided to return tomorrow and destroy the altar at that time.

The whole Water Temple area is then searched and much loot is found, they also find the quaters of a certain Kadis, who appears to be a Wizard of some sort. But they are puzzled because they did not fight any Wizards.

The party the returns to the safety of the Dwarven Temple and spend the night there.

--- Sept 26 ---
Our heroes return to the Water Temple and Furio casts speak with dead on one of the Elf warriors...
Was Kadis here when we attacked? No.
Where did he go? On the mine tracks to find help.
Because he knew we were coming? I don't know.
Who was he looking to ask for help? I don't know.
Do you know what lies between here and the other bridge? Yes, mine tracks.

The group then rows out to the altar and sets at it with picks. Eventually the altar collapses. Whitefire uses his Cape of Mountebank to dimension door everyone to safety. There is a resulting cave in. Then a Solar appears and grants everyone a Divine Boon.

Our heroes then proceed to the edge of the Water Temple area and decided to take the left most mine cart passageway. The mine cart passageway is followed for some way and then they come accross evidence of activity. There is a human corpse strung up with wires across the passageway. Its a gruesome spectacle and an obvious trap of some sort. Unfortunately Hem fails his attempt to disable the trap and it explodes, injurying Longstrike. Two more corpse bombs are found, Hem fails his second time also. But no-one takes damage as they are at a safe distance. Furio helps Hem out on the next one with a casting of Weild skill. Empty quarters of some sort of spellcaster are found.

When the party reaches the end of the mine cart tunnel they decide to come investigate the other mine cart tunnels before venturing forward. On the way back signs of acid damage are observed in a side passageway. Furio casts acid resistance on a couple of party members and everyone proceeds with caution. Sure enough an very large patch of moving black goo is encountered. Longstrike and Hem both hit the creature with arrows, but this results in the creature splitting into several different creatures. Longstrike ends up fireballing the creatures, which kills several of the smaller ones and then Bardol is able to finish off the larger creature.

Going back through the mine cart tunnel, Hem hears what sounds like a discussion between an Elf and some other creature down a side passageway. Longstrike uses a wand of Invisibility on Hem and Hem 'scouts' up while everyone else waits at a distance. Hem gets in close and sees 6 Elves and a whole bunch of Bugbears in tense negotiations. Evidently the elves are trying to recruit the bugbears. But then Hem sees a bugbear whisper something to his friend which then gets whispered to the leader of the bugbears.
The bugbear leader then says: "What is this trap you have set for us? There is a human with you. Show him to us."
The Elf leader(Kadis): "I don't know what you are talking about. Its just us elves."
The bugbear: "You lie. I can smell the human."

Hem decides this is a good time to 'scout' back to the others. After Hem explains the decision, our heroes decide to attempt an alliance with the bugbears. Our heroes rush forward. When they reach the elves and bugbears it is evident that things have turned hostile. Evidently Kadis has summoned a Dire Ape. Furio casts Cloak of Righteuousness and blinds almost all the elves and bugbears. One of the few creatures to not be blinded is the bugbears pet Dire Boar which charges and kills the summoned ape. Our heroes kill all the elves except Kadis, whom they are able to knock out.
Furio to the bugbears: "We mean you know harm, put down your weapons and you won't be hurt.
Urolax (the bugbear leader): "I put down my weapons for no human. If you truly mean us no harm then remove this blindness."
Furio: "We are here to defeat the elemental temples our only 'mutton' is with them."
Urolax: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Furio: "Good." and dismisses the blindness.

An aliance is formed with the bugbears who consider this their home and are unwilling to leave. The bugbears will give the heroes free passage throught their territory. As a measure of good will Furio provides some healing and the bugbears are permitted to have the loot from all the elves, except Kadis.

Kadis gives a bit of information about the Fire Temple and mentions that the leader of the Fire Temple, Tessimon, has the arm of a demon. But then he clams up and will not reveal anything further.

Our heroes take the bodies of the elves and Kadis back to the Dwarven Temple. Its not sure what to do with Kadis or how best to interogate him, since they have no magic that would help in this. But there is a pleasant surprise when its discovered that Kadis has a scroll of detect thoughts on his person. Longstrike gets to work on deciphering the scroll and adding the spell to his own spellbook.

--- Sept 27 ---
Furio casts Touch of Idiocy (-6 Wisdom), Doom, and Curse of Heavens on Kadis resulting in giving him a -8 on his Will saves.
Longstrike then casts Detect Thoughts three times but Kadis resists all 3 times.

--- Sept 28 ---
Duplicating the spells from the previous day. Furio and Longstrike have much better results and Longstrike is able to hear Kadis's thoughts on the second attempt.

Q: Who/what is Tessimon? Thought: Rumour has it that she was thought to be the Champion at one time.
Q: What did the pools at the Water Temple do? Thought: Green - green slime, black - skin dries up and turns purple, clear - acid. But if you survive touching all 3, what a rush of strength, agility, and the ability to breath water the person has.
Q: Who is in charge of the far bridge? Eeridik, shapechanger Rat creature.
Q: What is the proximity of the bridge to the mine cart tracks? Very close.

At this point Furio stuffs a bound and gagged Kadis into a bag of holding and then Summons a Lantern Archon which then transports Kadis to the Church in Verona.

LOL!

Comment from Verilia (the druid in my group): Whitefire, have you considered the environmental impact that action would have?

Re: the boat speed
We calculated it out and a rowboat can move 15ft per round. I don't know if this helps you, but it was a good number IMC, particularly as the party was rowing around the crater.

Do you know what lies between here and the other bridge?
I'd just answer this Yes. The player would quickly learn to ask useful questions, like What lies between here and the other bridge?

After, sending Kadis to Verona in a bag of holding....

The group decides that they need some silver weapons to fight the were rat creature. They gather 5 Dwarven volunteers and head for the Bladespirit room that has the Dwarven Forge. They exit the Dwarven Temple via the secret door and come back in through the south entrance. After proceding for a short while the group comes to a dead end. It seems someone has erected a stone wall blocking off the southern portion of the complex. The dwarves lay into this wall with their picks and in moments have broken through. The group moves forward to the dwarven forge area. Our heroes setup guard while the dwarves get to work.

Shortly after getting the forge back in order the Dwarves come back with some time estimates in _days_ to get items made. The dwarves don't understand why the heroes are frustrated and would rather just buy the items from Verona. It seems Dwarves would much rather make something than buy it. Its settled that the Dwarves will make some silver knuckles for Bardol and the rest of the weapons will be bought from Verona.

Later that evening the Dwarves finish the Silver knuckles. They have miniature hammers and anvils on them, to "put the mark of St. Moradin on the foe".

After cleaning up as best as they can the group returns to the Dwarven Temple. Furio stoneshapes the wall back.

--- Sept 29 ---
Furio sends a lantern archon with some money and items to be identified. In Verona Sir P. receives the items and buys 20 silver tipped arrows and 2 doses of silver sheen. These items are returned that evening. Its going to take a few days to identify the rest of the items.

--- Sept 30 ---
Our heroes set out for the Eastern Bridg Complex.

After passing through the Bugbear caves our heroes encounter some black panther like beasts with tentacles and cloven hooves. Hem gets injured Langstrike gets a good critical in and Bardol does considerable damaged. With one injured beast left Furio steps forward and finishes the creature off.

Moving forward our heroes come to a cave with some rubble. Hem moves further in to investigate, only to cause a cave in. After the dust settles a troll followed by several guards rush into the chamber. The troll is quickly dropped by Bardol and Longstrike. The guards immediately turn around and run. Our heroes chase after them but are unable to stop one of the guards from ringing a large bell. The other guards are pounding on a door pleeding to be let in.
Furio: "Drop your weapons and surrender and you won't be harmed."
Three guards charge and say "Its a lie, they never leave survivors."
A flurry of blows and a rapid shot later and their are no more guards left alive.

Their are two doors into the complex. Hem listens at the left door that the guards were pounding on and hears a growling bear, but doesn't hear anything at the other door. The group decides to open the door that they hear the growling bear.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- This section done from the perspective of Eddy "Redshirt" a human guard employed to protect the Eastern Bridge complex---
Earlier that day....
Whey todays going to be a good day I can just feel it. My favorite red shirt is clean and ready to go, I don't care what the other guys say I think its a lucky shirt. Its already proved lucky today 'cause I pulled guard dutty inside the doors. There is a rumour going around that there are 20 powerful Crusaders killing everyone and I don't want to be outside the doors if these guys attack.

Yup, definantly a lucky shirt I just won at craps.

Uh, oh the bell just rang. The outside guards are pounding on the door. I guess Eeradik locked them out. Poor guys probably going to be pin cusions for some holy archer type. Yup, lucky redshirt.

Ok, Eeradik gave us the battle plan. Everyone gets behind the door to the Dire Bear room. The Dire Bear should slow the holy warriors down and then we jump them. hhhmm, thats wierd the bear was growling and now its stopped.

Doh, stupid Troll is opening the door. The bear has been unchained! and is attacking the troll. Ooh thats gotta hurt. I think the crazy bear is actually obeying the holy warriors. Looks like they have some sort of giant martial arts type guy with them.
Bardol (after the Troll takes 165 hp subdual damage): "Regenerate that"

This is gonna be a nasty fight Eeradik has ordered me and two other guards forward with two Trolls. Everyone else pulls back into the far hallway.
Dang the holy warriors and the bear have downed two Trolls, that big guy just keeps beating on the downed Troll.
Ah, the bear is charging right for me. He is gonna try and overrun me. I'll just step aside here. Ooh looks like Fred didn't make it. Ouch one of the crazy intruders with yellow trim on his outfit hit me with an arrow. I'm lucky to be alive. Yup, lucky red shirt.

Well, there is only two of us guards left now against the Dire Bear and looks like 5 of the holy warriors. Heh, one tried to run by me (Longstrike), but I got a good hit on him. I'll just step back here out of the way a bit and drink my healing potion. Good thing I drank that potion because the guy with yellow trim (Hem) just hit me again. Almost killed me even though I drank the potion. Yup, lucky red shirt.

Ouch, Sam just kicked the bucket. I think I'll surrender maybe I'll get lucky and they'll spare me.
"I surrender, please don't kill me."
Furio "Stay right there"

Everyone runs by me. I'm not feeling so hot so I look through Sam's gear and drink his healing potion. He won't be needing it anyway.

Furio from around the corner shouts "Flee".

Ok, I guess I better get going now. I'll just run to those mine cart tracks. Always wanted to check them out anyhow.

Dang what are those weird panther things. I bet those pelts are worth a pretty copper. Oh well no time to stop now, gotta Flee.

--- end of Lucky Eddy Red Shirts account --------

--- Ok lets pick back up from the perspective of our heroes ---
Whitefire dominates the Dire Bear and then everyone works together to break the chain. Some long term spells are also cast (Prayer, Longstrike enlarges Bardol). Then the far door opens up and a Troll steps out. Between the Dire Bear and Bardol the Troll takes 165 hp subdual damage.
Bardol: "Regenerate that."

The Dire Bear moves through the doorway and engages another Troll. 3 human guards step up and pepper the Dire Bear with arrows. The Dire Bear takes out one of the guards and overruns the other. The second Troll drops. Whitefire casts produce flame and Bardol keeps slamming the downed Trolls into a pulp.

Longstrike moves past one of the guards to get into a better position and the guard has the odacity to hit him and do some non trivial damage.
Hem: "I'll take care of this guy." Thwak hit him .... huh ... he is still alive.
The guard drinks a potion to heal himself.

The Dire Bear takes out the other guard and then the dominate animal wears off. The bear goes crazy and attacks the nearest creatures, which happen to be the heroes. Longstrike fills the bear full of arrows and Furio finishes the bear off.

Hem strikes the lone guard again. Once again this guy survives.

The guard surrenders.
Furio: "Stay right there."

Bardol continues to pound on the downed Trolls while Whitefire uses produce flame on them,

Furio goes around the corner and sees a robed human peeking around the next corner. The rest of the heroes go around the corner only to be hit by a lightning bolt. Longstrike and Bardol rush forward and find two humans in robes, a troglodyte in platemail, 2 ogres and a Troll. Bardol concentrates his attacks on the human who cast the lightning bolt but finds the going difficult due to stoneskin. The other robed figure tumbles past Bardol and engages Furio with his fists.

The guard who surrendered loots his fallen companion for another potion.

Furio backs up and casts greater command "Flee". Every single one of the foes runs way. Bardol gets several attacks of opportunity as people move away from him. The two ogres have been slane by this point. The two robed humans flee to the south. The Troglodyte and the remaining Troll flees to the north, right into a room with some sort of arcane circle. The lone guard flees to the north.

When the Trog and the Troll break the circle a puff of smoke appears and there is the smell of sulfur in the air. A huge black spider like creature appears. Its 10 ft tall, has a stinger, and two pincers. The bebelith ensares the troll in a web.

Bardol chases after the spellcaster. Longstrike hits the bebelith for considerable damage. Furio moves forward and sees the bebelith and recognizes it for a serious threat and lets loose his hammersphere. Hem and Whitefire also let loose their hammerspheres.

The bebelith strikes Troglodyte and then heads for the archer that seriously injured it.

Furio casts Dispel Evil and steps forward and touches the bebelith, trying to send the creature back to hell. But since the creatue is dimmensionaly anchored the attempt fails. The bebelith strikes Furio down and then moves onto Longstrike and also strikes him down.

Bardol kills the sorcerer he was chasing and then his enlarge wears off. He looses his hammersphere at the bebelith. Hem and Whitefire start to withdraw. The bebelith attacks Bardol injurying him greatly. Bardol counterattacks and drops the bebelith.

Bardol then moves quickly to stabalize Furio and Longstrike with healing potions.

The eastern bridge complex has been defeated.

Bardol uses healing potions to revive Furio and Longstrike. Furio then heals everyone.

The group loots the bodies and then explores the area. Upon entering a room with many Sarcophogi several incorporeal creatures rise out of the sarcophogi. The heroes retreat.

The heroes decide to return to the dwarven temple to rest and recover spells. On the way back they pass by Steeran and Fesad's room. The bugbear spellcasters have captured Lucky Eddy Redshirt!
Steeran and Fesad: "This guy says he is with you and part of your group."
Furio: "Well...."
Steeran and Fesad: "We have been looking for you. You took our treasure and magic. We want it back."
Bardol: "We don't have your stuff with us."
Furio: "Would it be acceptable to return your things tommorrow?"
Steeran and Fesad: "Eddy will remain with us until you have returned our property."

The party gets back to the Dwarven Temple. The Dwarves say that a Lantern Archon recently delivered a note for the PCs.

Its from Sir P.
"The Paladin that we sold the amulet to is dead. His mission and killer are unknown. Commune has pointed to us as the cause of his death. I am being held under house arrest and the church is demanding your immediate return."
Furio casts Divination
Q: Is it a trap? A: No

--- Oct 1 ---
Whitefire, Longstrike, and Furio prepare spells while Bardol and Hem go back to return the stuff to the Bugbears and rescue Lucky Eddy.

Hem and Bardol return the Bugbear's items and rescue Lucky Eddy. When they are leaving and just out of site of Steeran and Fesad's room they hear a loud lionlike roar. Bardol and Hem leave Lucky Eddy, drink potions of Darkvision, and sneak back to the Steeran and Fesad's room. Just outside of the room the hear:
Tac: "How long ago were they here? When did they leave?"
Sneeran in obvious pain: "They ... just ... left a ... few minutes ... ago."
SNAP - the sound of bones breaking and then silence.

Hem uses his wand of invisibility on himself and Bardol and the wait in the darkness.

Soon, Tac emerges from the room, looks back, and holds up 5 fingers.

Hem and Bardol wait quietly while Tac sneaks up unaware. When Tac gets next to Hem he attempts a shot with his arrow but misses. Bardol then jumps into action and trips Tac. At this point 4 redish black dire lions and a troglodyte enter the hallway from the hobgoblin room.

The fiendish dire lions charge forward and pounce on Bardol and Hem. The Troglodyte casts a spell. Hem runs up one of the walls (thanks to slippers of spider climbing) and lets loose his hammer of moradin. Tac tries to get up but is tripped by Bardol again. Tac then tries to trip Bardol but fails. The Trog attempts to dispel the hammer of Moradin but fails. Bardol attempts to tumble through one of the lions but fails. The lions set upon Bardol and he is soon bleeding to death. Meanwhile Hem has downed a potion of fly. The Trog holds a curved dagger to Bardol's throat and says to Hem "Come down now or I will kill him." Hem descends to the ground. But Bardol stabilizes and miraculously regains consciousness [used 2 divine boons to regain consciousness]
Bardol tumbles away and Hem flys down the passageway. A few rounds later and the Trog and lions give up the chase.

Bardol and Hem eventually catch up with Lucky Eddy, who had started running a long time ago.

Bardol and Hem then make haste for the Dwarven Temple.

Once back in the Dwarven Temple the group gets transported back to Verona via Lantern Archon.

Our heroes are escorted to the judge who is in charge of the investigation of Capernius's death. In order to clear their names and find out exactly what happened to the Paladin our heroes fund the casting of Resurrection.

Once Capernius has been revived he relates his story. He was part of a band of adventurers that had found a four sided block of gold with a bas relief of a different person on each side. (The description of the four sided block is earily familiar to everyone, it has the same images as the one previously found in the moathouse). They melted down the gold and retired. But each member of his party had met an untimely death. Capernius took all the funds he had and purchased the Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location from our heroes. But the amulet didn't work, he was scryed upon and a demonic creature made out of flames attacked and burned him beyond recognition.

Furio cats Commune:
Q: Is someone at the Outer Fane responsible for the Paladin's death? Yes
Q: Is Varachan responsible? No
Q: Is Hederack responsible? YES
Q: Does H. know that the Paladin has been resurrected? No
Q: Will H. continue to come after the Paladin? Unknown
Q: Is the Fire Temple prepared for our arrival? Yes
Q: Will killing H. pay our debt to Capernius? A: It will protect him but not repay the debt.
Q: Are we strong enough to attack the Fire Temple? A: Yes
Q: Once the Fire Temple is destroyed will we be ready for the Outer Fane? A: Most likely
Q: Does Dunrat still have a part in the Temple hiearchy? Yes

After the commune, some convincing from the authorities, and pleading from Capernius our heroes decide to repay Capernius. They agree to repay him in installments.

--- Oct 2 ---
Our heroes catch a ride back to the Dwarven Temple via Lantern Archon.

Once back at the temple the Dwarves say that something tried to break through the door the previous day(after they had left). Upon inspection the outside of the door does have a big gash in it. There is also a note.
"You have been warned. Leave or die. - Ukemil"

Our heroes decide not to heed Ukemil's advice. They proceed to the crypt room beyond the Eastern Bridge complex. Just outside of the room Furio casts several protective spells on Bardol and then Bardol steps into the room. Sure enough the incorporeal undead rise from the sarcophogi and attack Bardol. But our heroes are ready. Whitefire centers a flamestrike on Bardol and does kills several. Furio destroys several with a turning check. Bardol finishes off the remainder of the foes.

Bardol advances a level in Monk.

Stand-off
The stand-off that just happened is always very nasty and tricky. Since it's going to be sure death either way, considering what the party is dealing with.

Re: Stand-off
Yeah, I was a bit easy on Bardol. I let him use 2 Divine Boons to regain consciousness, not something I had previously set up as a rule.

Divine Boon... each character has received one for each altar destroyed. I am not sure I will give any more out after the 4th altar is destroyed.

I think Ukemil will go back to the OF and rest and then come back with some means to get past the door to the Dwarven Temple. I'll have him attack the Dwarven Temple while the players are attacking the Fire Temple.

--- Oct 2 ---
Our heroes have just killed a bunch of incorporeal undead in the crypt room off of the Eastern Bridge complex.

Moving further into the crypt area our heros come across another room with a single sarcophagus atop an obsidia dias, before the dias is an empty pool, and off to the side is a statue of a human warrior with a spear.

Bardol moves cautiously into the room while everyone else watches. When he gets about 20 ft from the pool it starts to fill up with water. Bardol immediately moves back to the others and the pool slowly drains of water.
Furio casts Detect Magic and finds that the pool, the sarcophagus, and the statue are magical. Furio casts an area Dispel Magic and is dispels the magic in the statue but not the pool or the sarcophagus. Furio then casts Augery:
"What heppens if we push the lid off" Woe
Furio then casts Cat's Grace on Hem, Magic Circle Against Evil, and Recitation.
Hem, Furio, and Bardol carefully in.
The pool fills with water, but nothing further happens.
Upon aproaching the sarcophagus... the demon head on the it speaks:
"This is the resting place of Unariq VoTalsimol, who has joined with the Master."
An inscription can also be made out on the sarcophagus...
"The greatest of us, gone but not slain."
Furio and Bardol make 3 attempts to remove the lid. They fail in all 3 attempts but also make all 3 of their saves.
It is decided to leave this room alone.

Moving on to a different room our heroes find 3 more sarcophagi. Hem attempts to search for traps on them but fails a Fort save when he touchs one of the sarcophagi. He immediately turns pale, feels weak, exhausted, and is in an immense amount of pain. Furio tries to help Hem out with a cure light wounds, which cures his present damage but doesn't stop Hem from incuring more damage. Furio then tries a Lesser Restoration, which also temprarily helps Hem out but then everything returns. Finally Furio casts Remove Curse from a scroll and Hem is much relieved to be free of the malady. The party moves on without touching the sarcophagi.

The group then comes to a room with 10 sarcophagi and encounters 3 dire bats. The bats are dispatched quickly and the group moves on to the next chamber which has two 10 ft tall statues facing the oppososite exit.

Moving into the next room our heroes are confronted with a hot and smoke filled room. The room has a 3 ft brazier hanging from the ceiling, underneath it is a 10 ft diameter bowl. Two red snakelike creatures with spears, a black hound, and a red dwarf with wings are in the room. Although the smoke in the room makes it difficult to see our heroes are victorious. Longstrike takes out the fire mephit quickly before it can raise the alarm and Furio uses silence.

The heroes decide that it would be best to return to the Dwarven Temple at this point since they are not prepared for an all out fight with the fire temple.

On the way back in the bugbear mine tracks area a troglodyte and 3 large scaley lions are encountered. Bardol charges forward and then gets pounced by two of the lions. Whitefire flamestrikes the area with the lions and Bardol. Bardol makes his save and avoids the damage, but the lions are barley scathed by the spell. Bardol retreats back to the others and touches himself. The lions rush forward but are killed by the combined might of the group. Ukemil tries to escape but is blocked by a wall of stone from Furio. Ukemil is then beaten unconscious.

Our heroes take Ukemil back to the Dwarven Temple. They discover that the doors have been knocked down there is a dead Dire Lion and 4 dead dwarves. Evidently Ukemil went to the temple first.

--- Oct 3 ---
After a night of rest thr group sets about securing the doors. Furio uses stone shape and with the aid of the dwarves the doors are as good as new. Furio then casts 4 Lantern's of God so that the whole hallway leading up to the main temple are is protected.

Furio then starts questioning Ukemil... A Touch of Idiocy and two Zones of Truth later and the Trog is obliged to speak the truth.
Furio: "Who do you serve" A: Hedrack
Furio: "Who is more powerful, Varachan or Votasimil?" A: Votasimil
Furio: "What treasure is in the crypts?" No answer

Furio then drinks a potion of glibness. Ukemil is putty in his hands...
Furio: "We are interested in the treasure of the OF and Crypt, help us."
Ukemil: "I can get you 50,000 gp to leave and never come back"
Furio: "The fire temple is planning an attack on the OF"

Ukemil: "They don't have a chance. There is a red dragon guarding the Fire Door. They would have a hard time attacking through the water door the Tojanida, Minotaur, and Dark Nagas would take them out."
The Fire Temple has a Blackguard Salamander that is formidable.
Air Door has Invisible Stalkers arrowhawks and Ogres.
Earth Door has an Elder Earth Elemental.

Furio sends a bound and gagged Ukemil back to Verona via Lantern Archon.

The group heads off to explore some areas they haven't touched near the Eastern Bridge complex and runa across a nasty Grey Render with magical tatoos. The beast is finally brought down with a sneak attack from Hem (12d6 damage, 8 ones' were rolled)

The group retires to the Dwarven Temple where Furio casts Forbidence on the area.

Its decided that they will lay low for a couple of days in the hopes that they Fire Temple will let their guard down a little.

--- Oct 6 ---
The group decides to advance on the Fire Temple from the South side instead of the North side where they previously engaged some Salamander guards.

The first encounter occurs with 4 mephits all standing around the marble plate on the floor and a floating and glowing orb. The group goes in Invisible and fully buffed, Bardol is enlarged and has stoneskin and Fifi has animal growth. The 4 mephits are killed before they can even react.

The next encounter further in is with a gnome and spellcaster and a whole bunch of guards. These are dealt with rather handidly. A single elf guard wearing a red shirt survives flamestrikes and the carnage. The guard surrenders and readily directs the group to wear the temple is. He is told to walk to the exit out of the mines to the south and to never return. His response "Is it Ok if I run?"

Moving on the group comes to some red bronze doors which have been barred from the inside. Furio summons a huge Earth Elemental and with a bit of bashing but the doors eventually break open to reveal a very large room with 6 skeletons on fire, 4 Salamanders. The Earth Elemental moves in to engage the enemy but is checked with the Prot/Evil. The skeletons prove more than of a challenge than first thought but the group gets through them. The high priestess comes out of the ceiling on a floating platform and throws a couple of area dispels around. Skaasik falls unconscious in the path of a blade barrier. Hem turns invisible and spider climbs up the ceiling towards the high priestess who starts lowering the platform.
Whitefire uses his Cape of Mountbank to dimension door everyone on the platform. Tessimon, the priestess is killed but not before she has struck a drum on the altar. The altar has become transparent with a purple veins and a large fiery red-orange eye is looking out from within the altar. All who have looked upon the eye have had to make Will saves. Plus the altar is still decending into the flaming pit below...

Previously we have left our heroes...

Its at this point that Hem yells: "Invisible Stalkers... in the doorway"

Everyone averts their eyes from the altar. Hem shoots at one of the stalkers and thus becomes visible. Elfaerin levitates to the ceiling. Bardol gets in position for a jump. Whitefire wildshapes into a hawk. One of the stalkers strikes Hem while the other misses Bardol. Furio casts invisibility purge but it fails to reveal the foes. Bardol easily makes the 20ft jump off the platform to safety. Once Elfaerin reaches the ceiling he starts using his slippers of spider climbing. Whitefire summons a giant eagle.

Meanwhile the eye in the altar has gotten larger.

Elfaerin casts glitterdust and lights up the stalker on Hem. Furio lets loose his Hammer of Moradin on the lit up stalker. The giant eagle picks Furio up and sets him down safely on the ground. Whitefire calls lightning down on the drum and it is destroyed.

The platform sinks down into the flames. A tentacle shoots out of the altar and attempts to grab Whitefire, but it misses.

Everyone moves away from the altar. Bardol finishes off the stalker on him and Furio finshes off the stalker that has been attacking Hem.

The tentacle lashes out at the summoned eagle hits it and drags it into the altar.

At this point the once dead Tessimon rises again.

Hem hits Tessimon with an arrow, Furio re-directs his hammer at Tessimon, and Elfaerin hits Tessimon with 3 arrows. Bardol jumps out to the altar, activates his immoveable rod, swings down (at first fails his tumble check, but Furio gives him another chance with fickle finger of fate), strikes Tessimon for a killing blow, swings back up, and makes a balance check to end up standing on the immovable rod.

The group then loots the fire temple and destroys the altar.

A visibly wounded Hound Archon comes down from the heavens and grants each person a divine boon. He says "You have done good, but you must make haste for the forces of evil are moving fast on all fronts. I must return to the battle in the spiritual realm."
Furio: "Wait, let me heal you first."
Hound Archon: "Thank You, its greatly appreciated.

On the way to the Dwarven Temple the group comes across a new group of 50 dwarves that have come to help out. These dwarves are set up at the south entrance to the mines.

After defeating the last temple in the CRM, the Fire Temple, the group heads back to the refuge of the Dwarven Temple.

Over the next 6 days...
The group sends several magic-items back to Verona for sale. They are able to purchase several other magic items and pay the Paladin most of the money that they owe him.

--- Oct 12 ---
They get a message from Sir P., "Has Vister arrived yet? She is and Elf Paladin travelling from the Austrian Alps. She should be there by now."

A quick trip to Rastor confirms that Vister was there a couple of days and headed off to the mines. The party hires an orc tracker named Tulmak who is able to pick up here trail. Unfortunately it ends at the scene of a battle. Whitefire takes some of the elven blood found at the scene of the battle and scrys on Vister. Unfortunately he finds sees that Vister is now a Vampire and is in the company of 4 other Vampire Spawn. They are in some sort of hallway that has a large black door, stairs, and the wals and ceiling have are painted to look like the sky.

Everyone agrees that this is most likely behind the Air Door in the Outer Fane.

The party rests the night.

--- Oct 13---
After preparing the proper spells the heroes head for the Air Door.

Bardol makes makes a greater Air Key from the two lesser Air Keys. He then touches the Air Door with the key and it slides into the ground.

Whitefire: "This is the corridor I saw while scrying."

The hallway is empty, our heroes check to the two side doors and find that the rooms are empty. Bardol leads the way up the steps and encounters Vister the Vampire and 6 Vampire Spawn. Bardol moves in and the Vampire Spawn swarm him. Bardol puts his Combat Reflexes to good use. Hem and Elfaerin climb the walls and start shooting arrows. Four arrowhawks then swoop down and shoot lightning at Bardol. Furio turns two of the Vampire Spawn which flee to the far side of the room. Just then 6 Ogres in platemail rush into the room. Bardol strikes down Vister but she just turns gaseous and flees out the door with the two cowering Vampire Spawn. Furio casts a spell and blinds most of the remaining foes in the room. The heroes kill everyone, but Vister and the two spawn have escaped.

A short discussion ensues about what to do next. Meanwhile each one of them has the distinct impression that someone is trying to watch in on them. Its decided to move on and kill as many foes as possible before retreating.

The party takes the West exit out of the room, the same direction Vister and the Spawn took. Coming to a door on the left Bardol opens it and the party sees a room filled with row upon row of identical men in some sort of temporal stasis. Not knowing what to think of this the party closes the door and moves on.

Hem listens at the next door and is freaked out.
Hem: "There is someone on the other side and he said 'Do not harm me, I am on your side'"
The heroes carefully open the door not knowing what to expect. The room is lavishly furnished and inside is a lone man with a scarred face, brown hair, and dressed in black loose fitting clothing. He has an Obyx symbol around his neck.
Varachan: "My name is Varachan, I am on your side" He tosses his obyx symbol to the side.
Furio: "What do you mean, how can we trust you?"
Varachan: "I have been watching you for sometime. Recently while studying some old texts on the subject of redemption. I had an epiphany and realized that all that I have strived for is wrong. I want to atone for my past sins. The only way I feel I can do this is by making sure that the cult never succeeds. They want to destroy the world, they must be stopped."
Bardol: "We know a little bit about the foes if the OF, what else can you tell us?"
Varachan: "There is a Cornugon, and two-Drow ambassadors just down the hallway."
Bardol: "What is in the room with all those guys encased in metallic coccons?"
Varachan: "That is the Chamber of Hate. Unariq Votasimil is being cloned in that room. Be careful a Succubus guards the room. I need to stay undercover within the organization, in case you fail. They are up to something big and are excavating some site, but I don't know where. I will scry you when it is safe for you to contact me. You cannot linger here, the vampire was to report to me if there wee intruders, but she may raise the alarm with others."

With that the heroes leave to deal with the Drow and the Cornugon, which are right next door to the Red Dragon.

Furio, erects a stone wall out of site from the dragon and casts silence on a couple of Elfaerin's arrows. The group bursts into the room and catches the drow unprepared. The drow are both dead before they can cast a single spell.

Hem and Whitefire open the other door to the Cornugon's room. White fire summons a Huge Earth Elemental, but the elemental cannot touch the Cornugon due to magical wards. Whitefire dispels the ward anfd the Cornugon is aproaching Hem

Meanwhile Furio and Bardol have stuffed the female drow into a bag of holding.

Tune in next week for more....
