New monster for the Fanes
This may be a little low-level, but with a bunch of them, I think it could be quite annoying. It'll also make a nifty critter to be summoned by a high-level summon monster spell: www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/re/re20021028a

The only problem with that critter is that my party uses continual flame lanterns. That's magical light with a 30ft radius.

Thus if one of these things came up to the party it would take something in the neighborhood of 9d6 damage just getting into attack range. Most parties they wouldn't attack.

I suspect they'd kill off any parties that rely on darkvision.
