The Moat house Obelisk and Smokepowder
One of my players informed me of the fact that they are planning on destroying the obelisk.
In town spugnoir's apprentice IMC is the alchemist gnome from the ashabenford write up in the FR book who readily makes smoke powder. They are going to commision him to make a whole bunch then pack it around the obelisks bottom and spread lantern oil everywhere; Drop a bottle of alchemists fire and that makes for a big 'ol explosion.
What are your thoughts on this? Despite the fact that i know if they succeed there will be some reprecusions from both the Doom Dreamers and Tharizdun himself for destroying something so imbued with the Dark Lords power what of other things?
I think of throwing them all into the "are you here to free me" with some twists dream and make them throw will saves like crazy that do nothing.
But what of actually detroying it.. consequences.. yada yada yada

Re: The Moat house Obelisk and Smokepowder
There's always the thought that the obelisk, after all the smoke and debris has cleared, remains untouched, floating and slowly rotating in mid-air. Hanging there, suspended in the blackness, silent and cold.
You could rule that such a powerful artifact of Tharizdun's faith couldn't be harmed by a mere mortal alchemical creation.
Sure, the rock base that seems to be holding it up would be shattered, but who's to say that it's really "holding it up"? Maybe it's just a convenient place to hang a ladder to get to the base and touch the gem hiddent here.
It sure would impress upon the PCs the power they are facing, and maybe make them a bit fearful, too.

hmm..
.. i like it =]
Maybe to make them groan they'll find shattered bits of magic items afterwards that were 'hidden' before.. no one DID do a search check after all=]

Re: hmm..
Actually, there was a lengthy discussion of this a while back. I don't think the thread is around anymore, and I think it also predates the "Best of the Boards".
Here's my take on using powerful magic (or alchemy) to destroy the obelisk...specifically, a disintegrate directed at the pillar below (this was from a group that had been to the CRM and back, on a stopover on the way to the temple).
The pillar vanishes, and the obelisk hangs in midair, unmoving. It begins to glow with an inner fire, sheding violet light throughout the chamber.
A bright violet flash eminates from the base, rising towards the top sheding a brilliant violet ring of light. It reaches the peak of the pillar, then turns downward again. [pause for PC reactions, 1 round's worth each]. As the violet light reaches the base of the pillar, you are briefly blinded by it's intensity and chilled to the bone (3d6 cold damage, no save).
The light coalesses around the bottommost point, extending downward in an intense violet beam. It strikes the floor, and a new pillar rises upwards out of it. The violet light winks out as the pillar is completed, and darkness prevades in the chamber...your light sources were snuffed out in the process.
(when light is re-established) In the dim light you've re-established, you see that the pillar is much as it previously was, ladder and all. Looking at (caster of spell, lighter of powder, etc), you notice, to your horror, that a violet obex is inscribed upon his/her forehead. [effects left to the DM's discression, recommend a Bestow Curse as per 20th level caster].
As for how to actually successfully destroy it? That's a subject of broad disagreement as well. Aside from direct deific intervention, I personally lean towards one of:
Wish
Miracle
A successful turn attempt against a 25 HD entity

Re: The Moat house Obelisk and Smokepowder
My players did the following: They used the scroll of stone shape which they found in room 30 to seal the crack at the bottom of the cave, so that the water could not flow out. This flooded the entire cave, hiding the obelisk and anything else under about 45 feet of water. The water level was now as high in the shaft (32B) as before the cultists had removed the stone plug.

And I would say that smokepowder or similar things shouldn't affect the obelisk.

Just for general info: The twist with the obelisk staying in place has been BoB'ed.
