Love of the obex curse
One of the players managed to say tharzidun when they were at the bottom of the obelix chamber. Well needless to say i've had lots of fun with this and one of the major focus' of the campaign has turned to trying to get this cured.

Lot's of fun =] , so was the fruit

Re: Love of the obex curse
I've already decided that at least one of my PC's is going to hit this, I've altered the description to include a small metal plaque that says "Know now the symbol of the dread master of evil, Tharizdun"

Except..... (DM sneaky bit coming)

The character will only see the bit before the name, I'm ruling that "reading" it in your mind is enough to trigger the curse. I know it's cruel but it's just too good a roleplay opportunity to miss.

I will give the affected character a will save to recall the name after he comes round though ;)

Re: Love of the obex curse
Perhaps the character must stand on the obex to read the plaque? That way, while one character is standing on it and can read it, the others cannot and will ask what it says. Also, you could make the character forget what they read after stepping off the obex, even if they do not say it out loud. That way, it'll force additional tries and eventually someone will say the name out loud! Pretty interesting idea, JeffQ UK! :evil

YMMV, but I think that's railroading. While it's neat that the PC falls down, almost dies and then comes back, it does also entail a penalty - and no, the dagger does not make up for it. If the players are sensible enough to not have their characters utter funny words while standing on funny symbols, why force it upon them. They'll get plenty of that in the inner fane.

I agree, besides if there was a plaque with Tharizdun's name on it here then there wouldn't have been much of a cover up about who everyone was worshiping in the original ToEE.

Re: Love of the obex curse
I know, but I'm trying to accomplish two things here..

1) Get the party to go to the original temple (see other threads where I've asked about getting them to go to Nulb)

2) Offer the strongest role-player a bit of a challenge to show two other party members how it can be done.

My group consists of 3 role players and 2 roll players with potential, as such, whichever way the Obex pans out, I'm on to a winner when the roll-players realise they can't just make a roll on some skill or other to affect whats happening.

Re: Love of the obex curse
I'm dense as a brick here, but how's the symbol at the obelisk gonna get the party to the old temple?

Edit: State of denseness continues: Why Nulb? If they don't want to go, and you manoeuver them into going, and they get killed/level drained/wis damaged by various incorporeals, then... Damn, this seems like I'm picking on you, Jeff - that's not my intent.

I understand why you want them in Nulb. It's cool, and if anyone there played the old adventure, it'd be so much fun having them meet Lareth. I tried moving my bunch into Nulb - lots of warnings from the neighbouring village of Sobanwych, glimpses of a cowled figure in the mnisty town, you name it - and my group almost wet themselves.

If you want your group to go to Nulb, have a PS, penned by Hedrack, be at the bottom of Naquent's note to Dunrat, instructing him to go to Nulb and the old temple. I wouldn't mention Lareth directly in the note, but the mentioning of the two locales alone might be enough.

Re: Love of the obex curse
I don't really see it as railroading as much as making it a better encounter. I would, of course, provide XP for the 'trap', and I would entertain thoughts as to the CR rating of such a trap. Perhaps CR 4 (you have to do 2 things that are very unlikely).

I can't imagine my party (or any party) actually standing on the symbol of an evil deity, let alone standing there and then saying his name! There is no way anyone would do such a thing. According to the module, you have to actually be ON the obex, not just down at the bottom of the chamber.

smetzger, remember that this chamber was never discovered by the original ToEE. Only the cult worshipping Tharizdun knew about it.

IIRC, this is the first symbol of an Obex, and thus the first chance someone has to relate Tharizdun to this mess. The flaming eye and inverted 'Y' symbols are to the EEE, NOT Tharizdun. Thus, it is unlikely the party will know about Tharizdun when they get to the bottom of the chamber. Maybe there's on obex in the ghoul warrens? Is it mentioned in the journal? Sorry, don't have my book at work...

My apologizes in advance if my tone seems sarcastic and I don't mean to offend, especially to 00Ash.

Re: Love of the obex curse
OK, basically I'm going to run it this way with my explanation for each bit...

1) Small plaque in middle of holy symbol - In my group pretty much ensures that one of the role players will trigger the obex effect and provide much RP potential for the roll-players

2) They don't yet know Big T's name - If the victim makes his WIS check (which he should do) they'll find it out (Not crucial at the moment but they think they've got it all figured out so I'm just gonna mess with their heads a little) ;)

3) Mentioning Big T's name back at Hommlet - Will be met with mostly blanks apart from Y'dey and Elmo with references to the original temple being their input = trip to ToEE and Nulb
