Having a little break
I have managed to get one of my players to DM a little to give me a break ( ahhhhh ... sigh),

I have left things with the group having dealt with the back entrance to the mines, the earth temple and Vranthis. While Ive got some time on my hands I want to plan what will happen next, so I was wondering on your ideas.

Will the entrance be abandoned by the temples?
Will any other temple take over?
With the Earth Temple gone, will that have an effect on the other temples?

That sort of thing....

As always, would love to hear your views.

With just one temple gone, ramifications will be minimal. Oomarthis will reinforce his defenses towards the fallen temple. The dire apes will have a field day in the new and larger quarters. Maybe an earth monster of some sort is drawn to the ruined earth temple (didn't they take down the altar, I seem to remember they did). And perhaps a wyvern has moved into the entrance hall. But I'd say that that should be it (and it might make up for any other reinforcements).

Oh, if you use the wyvern idea, remember to put a post with a skull on top a way down the trail up to the west entrance. On the post there's a sign saying, "Use South Entrance".

Re: Having a little break
In my campaign I let the dire apes move into the earth temple drawn into it not only because of the space, but also because of the extra food lying around. I remember reading in another threat that somebody let the troglodytes being raised as ghouls under the leadership of a ghast, using Monte Cook's templates of those creatures. I also had the door being sealed with a few stoneshape spells. Perhaps if they stay away really long the area might once again be used by a new earth temple, but I would not be too quick about it. The Doomdreamers are bussy with another project and it might also give the players the feeling they have been doing nothing.

Re: Having a little break
Did any of the enemy escape? Are any of them obviously good? An escaped enemy could report that the Temple (or western entrance) were attacked by infidels. Otherwise, it is likely that Hedrack will assume it was done by one of the other Temples. These sort of things are expected by Hedrack, from time to time. It might make Hedrack suspicious that the Earth Temple has now been attacked and destroyed twice. He could even use Speak with Dead to try and determine which Temple faction was responsible, which if you have a holy symbol wielding good cleric then it may give him more reason to become suspicious - as I take it that being responsible for a rival Temple's defeat is a badge of honor for the victors and not something they try to hide.

Assuming that Hedrack is not suspicious then he will go about making arrangements for replacements, as he did the last time the Earth Temple was destroyed. With access to spells like Wind Walk, Hedrack can cover lots of ground and bring in powerful NPC to help out. The module specifies how to restock the CRM. If you follow it verbatim then humanoid losses are replaced at a rate of 20% per week while nonhumanoids are replaced at 10% per week.

There are about 40 humanoids at the western gate, so for every week that your players are not active against the CRM there will be 8 humanoids recruited to take up guard duties. This should include at least one leader-type NPC to take command. It will take 10 weeks before the nonhumanoid Howler is replaced by some other monster. Therefore, it take 5 weeks to replace all the humanoids (not necessarily with gnolls and humans) and 10 weeks to replace the Howler (not necessarily another Howler).

I'd do this at least once, but after that your players might wonder just where all these cultists are coming from. At some point the CRM will be abandoned by the Outer Fane asthey concentrate their efforts on keeping the Fanes protected.

Re: Having a little break
I have been thinking about "Where do the reinforcements come from?"

Ok, so most of the humanoids come from the surrounding area. A good tactic for PCs would be to go visit all the humanoid tribes in the area and try to dissuade them from joining up with H. This would be especially easy for the nearby Orc encampment. I don't think my players will think to do this, but I wonder if any other players have.

Also, for reinforcements to happen groups of clerics will need to be scouring the countryside for humanoids. Maybe a few of those Druids on the wandering monster chart are working for the cult and sending in a constant stream of humanoids. Some of these Druids may even be non-evil, I mean it does get keep nasty nature destroying humanoids busy.

According to the module, not until two have been taken out. At this point, its still just typical infighting. He probably presumes one of the other temples hired assassins to do them in.

I'm just going to reinforce the "not until two temples are taken out" idea. It's only when the party has a master key (which requires four lesser keys) that they become a threat to the Outer Fane. Also, the strike teams that Hedrack assmebles are tough, and might wipe out a party at this point.

Re: Having a little break
He could send a weaker strike team to test their abilities. It could be led by Ukemil who would have orders to escape if things get hairy. It'll be cool if he escapes so that they will see at least one familiar face when they attack Outer.

Naah.... Basically the Crater Ridge Mines are there to test the PCs' abilities. Also, Hedrack is cautious enough to go for a kill once he notices the party. And the way I see it, they'll slip under his radar until they've taken two temples out.

At that point, it will also be an issue for him to get survivors of PC attacks - even dead enemies (speak with the dead) - in order for him to get as much info as possible. As an example, last session IMC, he sent the succubus to Verbobonc after recovering the body of Nilbool. There, she seduced the party rogue (a human so ugly that he was completely bowled over by the attention - oh, and the charm monster) and made him tell everything.

Going from memory here...

If the earth temple is gone, the water temple will expand. The vanishing of an adjacent rival is too good to pass up. Even an attack on the fire temple might be postponed, as the added territory will enhance water's prestige enough for it to gather more strength. I seem to recall that there are elves just out of the water temple looking for allies. Have them contact the PCs, or perhaps even send Nilbool, out looking for added muscle for the fire temple assault. If you are using the web enhancement, that's where Kuo-Toa reinforcements could spring from to occupy the now-empty rooms of the earth temple. Perhaps the water temple even makes a bold grab for control of the west gate... If it succeeded it would surpass even the fire temple in power.

The temples are chaotic and evil; if one is gone or seriously wounded, the other will fall upon it like wolves upon sheep. Your players might even take advantage of this as mine did.
