What do they know ?
Hi all....i've just hit a small dilema in my campaign and i need to turn to the hive mind for help :)

My players have just started there assault on the water temple, having annihilated the earth temple and the northern birdge complex. The assault went quite well, and they managed to capture (!) the high priest, Kalishean (sp?).

Up a rope trick...she's unconcious (in a bad way), stripped, bound, gagged etc. The rest up, get spells back and begin to question her. So a prayer, enervate (4 levels), Doom, Curse, Zone of Truth and Detect thoughts later...they begin to question her on what she knows...

So, what does she know ? With that combination of spells im thinking the players can pretty much drain her of information (detect thoughts is particularly nasty).

As an aside, what should my players know at this point ?

Thanks

-Lorrin

Re: What do they know ?
Well, Kelashein would know a lot - and then again, not really:

  • Most, if not all, details of the inhabitants of the Water temple.
  • The general layout of the Mines and the fact that the "Masters" live in the middle. She may even have met Hedrack once, but Naquent would probably be her main contact. In effect, she wouldn't know much more than what the other grunts know.
  • How to activate the keys.
  • If you choose to use the Spider Eater Riders as a food, equipment, and sacrifice delivery service, she would know of their schedule
  • The secret entrance near the naga.
  • Names and races of all the creatures at the Water Bridge.
  • Maybe the fact that Clanggred the gargoyle hosts "Crater Mine Gladiators" once a month.
  • She would also know about the bugbears in the track tunnels.

What levels are your PCs by now? Would they be able to withstand the Outer Fanes? If so, then Kelashein would be a splendid way of getting them into the middle (it worked for me, as my group recovered and healed the tortured bard in the fire temple), thus moving the adventure along.

Without my books, that's just about all I can think of. Hope it helps :)

My party is just about to hit 9th level (!), they are perhaps the most paranoid bunch i've ever dm'd.

Here's the information i said during the course of interogation (they sprung this one on me with no warning):

-She is the high priest of the water temple
-The masters of this place, are called the Doomdreamers, and live in the central spire (picture in head of robed guy with mask)
-Her boss is Naquant (picture in head, Obex symbol) and Hedrack (again picture in head, more fuzzy, and obex symbol)
-She was planning an attack against the fire temple (map and plan provided)

Not a huge amount of information looking at it.

The party is currently heading to Verbobonc to hand her over to the authorities, questioning her on the way. The party wizard is going to start scrying(clairvoyence) the bridge and try and clairvoyence past the door (air).

I didnt mention about the keys (they didnt ask or even mention the door).

I wonder if kidnapping the cleric would draw the attention of Hedrack, who then would scry the cleric. Then he would cast an planar ally spell and send the demon of to kill the cleric. She might not know much, but if the PCs are going to hand her over to other authorities, it might pose a threat. On the other hand, if you like to use the idea that the cult has infiltrated Verbobonc, then you might trick them into handing over the prisoner to that cult. It would be fun if they meet her again in the CRM ;)

I had thought of that...

There has been some infiltration (Secret order mainly and people in power), but i think they plan on handing her over to St. Cuthbert which has not been infiltrated.

I like the Planar Ally spell, since it doesnt really cost anything for Hedrack to do.

Re: Priest
The planar ally also has got the additional benefit that it will really spook the hell out of the PCs. After all, they are bussy making an enemy out of somebody who is clearly very powerful. It is sort of a warning for what Hedrack is going to send after them soon, since they already destroyed two temples :evil

The demon attack sounds pretty good. There are - as has previously been mentioned - some excellent demons in the MM2 that would work very well as prospective assassins.

And a surprise attack by such a demon would certainly get the players' attention (heh, I can almost read Muratis' description of the assault...).

Re: What do they know ?
If they've only taken out the Earth Temple, then according to the module as written, they're still beneath the notice of Hedrack.

Once they finish off the Water Temple, they've officially bumped off two temples and are prime for some of Hedrack's attention.

Keep in mind that Hedrack and the DD's don't care one whit about the CRM. It's just one huge buffer zone.

Particularly as their plot advances and they find the Champion of Elemental Evil, they could care less what happens to the CRM.

So unless the party does something that stamps them as INVADING FORCES OF GOOD, Hedrack is likely to write them off as just another bunch of mercenaries in the never-ending struggle for superiority between the EEE temples.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, obviously YMMV.

I just wanted to point out that while as the DM, we have to focus our attention on the actions of the party, we also have to keep in mind that the attention of the doomdreamers is largely focussed elsewhere.

Perhaps instead you could use this trip to the city to showcase the fact that the other faiths are being infiltrated. Maybe people aren't getting healed as regularly as they normally are, there's a sickness going around town, or the smithy where they get their armor repaired is a little over eager to get them to attend service at his temple.

If Kelashein then gets kidnapped from the Church of St. Cuthbert, things could really get interesting...

-Thrommel, who rains on the parade and rains in BLOOD!!! Mu ah ha ha ha!

True Thrommel, but it all depends on what you want with the campaign. If you want the group to focus on the CRM, distracting them with what would be a great side-track (trying to find out what happened to Kelashein), might not what the DM wants. A suddenly appearing fiend that kills Kelashein though is almost definitely going to draw their attention back to the CRM. Hedrack's attention can always be explained by the fact that Kelashein suspects what the Doomdreamers are planning. It was after all her temple that went to Hommlet to recover the relics ;)

Re: What do they know ?
Going back to what she knows...let's toss in what she knows that isn't true (remember, nothing you cast on her takes away that lovely insanity score).

She knows that she is destined to become the Queen of Oerth after she's eliminated that b___ Tessimon who's been upstaging her.

She knows that the fish-things under her command worship her as a goddess, and that hundreds of them will emerge from the depths of the Stalagos, hunt the PCs down, flay them, and feed them to the shrimps.

She can tell them all about how Pooldilboop is a false god, and that any Kuo-Toa who follows it is terribly deluded.

Quick decision time...if you want to add the Web Enhancement section, she probably knows a *little* about it as well. For that matter, she might even know what the Second is, although she knows nothing of what he's up to or doing.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"
