detect magic on Tulian's Eye
So, would the Eye have a Transmutation aura because of its curse?
This came up in my game, and I did say it had a Trans aura. However, they cast it when it was still on the "pedestal", so now they think it may just be because of the mimic in disguise.

Re: detect magic on Tulian's Eye
An identify shows the most primary ability of the item and therefor, considering the nature of the Eye, I would let it show the aura of it's primary ability.
It's all up to you what you make of it eventually though

Re: detect magic on Tulian's Eye
Well, it doesn't have any abilities, per se. It just has a curse.

Re: detect magic on Tulian's Eye
I agree that it is similar to Bestow Curse and would therefore make it transmutation. Furthermore, I would say it shows strong magic, not just moderate. A Remove Curse would not remove the actual curse, IMO. A restoration would work, but the victim would continue to get damage, and would likely still have scars. An identify, IMO, would not get any information.

Of course, the hammer & anvil welts pretty much give the game away without having to identify it!

Tulian's Curse
Cursed items are deceptive and therefore hard to detect - until its too late.
A cursed -1 sword would radiate Transmutation magic, likely fooling the caster into thinking it a beneficial enhancement bonus to attack and damage. Likewise, Tulian's eye might radiate a Transmutation magic, perhaps fooling the caster into thinking it a beneficial enhancement bonus to an attribute.
One of my players did identify Tulian's Eye and I told the caster that the primary effect was an enhancement bonus to the possessor's constitution.

Wait, isn't Thrommel unaffected by constitution penalties? You can't get any lower than a zero!

Re: Tulian's Curse
Pure game mechanically wise an enhancement BONUS is always positive. So if you want to be nitpicky, your players might become a bit angry about your wording. Of course, if you would have used enhancement MODIFIER (which can be both negative and positive), they would be wondering about it. Unless you always use that...

Re: Tulian's Curse
Madfox,
I was trying to get across the idea that cursed items (IMC) are deceptive. A cursed -1 sword when identified would be revealed to have a enhancement bonus to attack and damage.
That's a purposeful deception that is attributed to the magical flaw or the magical mutation of a cursed item, or by the malicious intent of the creator of the cursed item.
IMO, a cursed items should be extremely hard to detect ... until its too late.

Re: Tulian's Curse
Yup, cursed items have this nasty habit of looking good
Last night, the party wizard drew a hat out of stash of magic items. We had no idea what these items would do, since they were unidentified war loot from the kingdom we were working for.
As it turned out it was a Hat of Stupidity, giving the wizard -4 int and -2 wis. However, he felt that the hat made him a stronger wizard and fighter. Needless to say we took it from him (we need his fireballs)
