Touching the Tip of the Obelisk
Hello all,

I am new to this message board and find the info helpful in running my RttToEE campaign (in the FR CS I may add).

Anyhow, in last night's session one of the PCs was curious to how the obelisk was able to support itself on a point.

He climbed the pillar and started to actually touch near it's base. He did not use the torch of revealling to see the gem that was actually hidden there.

Do I assume he touched it accidentally and gets whisked away to the secret chamber?

Thanks in advance,

John.

I was inclined to agree (primarily because I don't think my players will have the nouse to realise they need to use the torch, and I wouldn't like them to miss this entirely) but there are other valid views. See Trithereon's post in the middle of this discussion...

My players did much the same thing on Tuesday night.

They wanted to see what would happen if they removed the sone right underneath the point.

SO when he tried to hit the pillar with a hammer I wisked hime into the dark room for some fruit. :-)

You need to go to the store and buy some cards, because your players aren't playing with a full deck. I'm joking, of course. :) That's why we love our players, they make those traps fun to have!

Honestly, though, looking up at a 200-foot tall obelisk that sucks your strength and emits an unnatural cold that you cannot ward off, likely emanates an overwhelming taint of evil, and balanced on a point on top of a gem, would it even cross your mind to remove the gem? I didn't think so! I hope my players try to take it! :D

Well, it's been an established fact for quite a while that the gem only exists - in the sense that it can be interacted with - if you're looking at it in the light from the torch.

Other than that, there's a sweet suggestion in the BoB thread (I hope) that if the pillar under the obelisk is removed, the obelisk just keeps hanging there. After a minute it begins to rotate slowly.

How about the closer T. is to being released the faster the Obelisk rotates.

That sounds like a neat idea, but it's very unlikely the party will ever be back in this room. Especially if they seal it off.

Oh, the choices...

I may be pleasantly surprised, but I really doubt that my PCs will try to use the Torch of Revealing in the obelisk room. The fruit would be such a great freak-out for them though! My group is probably going to miss some of the wonderful Big T temptations and secrets unless they change their tactics a little...

Maybe this room can teach them that they need to use the Torch in the future to find some other interesting things, and that careful searching may bring...rewards?

As always, I can't wait to see what my players will do!

I let an identify on the torch reveal that the torch would cause special things to happen in areas important to Tharizdun. Made my group scamper through the entire moathouse dungeons with the damn thing lit. And they found the fruit. And all ate, but one. And now they're headed for teh Outer Fane. Where all who ate must save or suffer a -1 profane penalty to saves vs spells and effects from clerics of Tharizdun :evil .

Two of my players got the fruit, one ate it (and got +1 STR).

Are there any other effects of eating the fruit (other than the above and the +1 to a stat)?

One presumably is still carrying around the fruit? Any suggestions as to what happens (the group just cleared out the old temple)?

Re: Touching the Tip of the Obelisk
There is only the +1 bonus to a random stat. There is no actual profane effect for entering the Outer Fane AFAIK. That was DM's prerogative, although a pretty interesting one at that. One question, does that penalty stack with the one for standing on the obex? I don't see a type of penalty for the obex, though one can assume it is profane.

The fruit should probably radiate strong transmutation magic, and thusly will likely remain okay indefinitely, until consumed or partially consumed. I would give the bonus only if fully consumed and the penalty if partially consumed by another.

The save and the penalty is all mine ;) . Basically, the players have all but forgotten the fruit and stat increase, so I thought I oughta remind them. Heh.

Re: Touching the Tip of the Obelisk
A reminder my players do not need ;) Two of the PCs ate from the fruit because they thought that was the only way to leave the dark room. The others do not entirely trust the situation, especially not after an insane member of the cult started to take these two PCs in their confidence because of the blackness on their soul. So now everytime something bad happens to one of these two PCs they immidiately start to associate it with the fruit :)

Re: Touching the Tip of the Obelisk
My players were more intelligent about it. The cleric used stone shape on the small supporting pillar to collapse it, and never touched the big purple pencil.

On the fly I decided the small pillar wasn't actually holding it up, it was just holding it in place. So the obelisk, being neutrally buoyant, floated around the room. :) Made it tons of fun for the PCs to try to use the elevator back up (especially crossing from one to the other). :evil

ROFL

That's one of the funnier variations of "the pillar stays in place" idea that I've read so far!

Re: Touching the Tip of the Obelisk
hrm... my party didn't remove the pillar... they took enough time getting through the moathouse that the other group of cultists came with the cart & waited until the party was in the chamber with the obelisk. then they sealed the entrance :evil ! I had ruled that they could touch the gem without the torch, so they were able to use the big purple fruit machine to get out.

Of course, they couldn't leave without allowing the one of the party members to weaken the foundation of the chamber by casting stone to mud on the cracked area of the wall. i loved seeing the look in the dwarven cleric's eyes when the crack widened & ran up the wall toward the now sealed entrance! nope, my obelisk isn't floating. it's buried under tons of mud and dirt... as is about half of the dungeon under the moathouse... he he... that was fun.

btw, is the ruling that the gem can only be seen in the light of the torch in the faq or errata? i looked, but it's long & i was tired, so i may have missed it.

Well, I think it made general consensus long ago (and hence, it has gone into oblivion - how cool is that? A board with its very own sphere of annihilation!), but opinions differ. So no, I honestly don't think it's in the faq or the errata.

Could someone with access to the module please say exactly what it says under the description of the pillar and/or gem?

Chapter 2, 32F. Pillar (pg. 28) : "The pinpoint tip of the obelisk, if viewed in the light of a torch of revealing (see Appendix 1), is actually purple-colored gem of unknown make."

Hope that helps.

Re: Touching the Tip of the Obelisk
Well, I think that it's quite clear that unless you have lit a torch, it's just a tip. Light the purple and presto - it's a gem! Otherwise, I think it would be TOO easy. I mean, a 10' pillar, with rungs. Check out what it takes in the Outer Fane temple. Throw this switch, say that, do the other.

Also, a reasonable result for identify would be: "This item, if filled with a special fuel, will reveal hidden things in temples for The Sleeping God."

But of course, campaigns vary.
