Beholders laugh at the D&D movie too......
Hi. I've been floating about this board for a while, picking up some superb ideas for the RttToEE game which I'm running just now. I thought I'd finally make my own post and share an excellent story from a fellow DM......

I learned D&D when I was living in the USA for a year (I'm from the UK) and the group I joined were playing RttToEE. I played through some of it as a PC, and then I had to go back home. When I got back I inducted a group of friends to the wolrd of D&D and began to run some games as a DM, and now were are about half way though the CRM in this campaign. I was recently back in the States for a couple of weeks and had a chance to catch up with my old DM. He shared with me a story involving Kex, the beholder in the Recovered Temple....

As any of you who have seen the awful D&D movie will know, the 5 seconds of beholder-type 'action' in the film consists of the main characters distracting a beholder and his human 'companions' with the cunning use of a thrown rock. My old DM's party found it particularly hilarious that a mighty beholder would ever be fooled by such a pathetic trick, and it was a common topic of conversation in D&D-related moments. The DM felt that they were getting a bit cocky about beholders because of this, and so when they finally came across Kex in the Recovered Temple, this happened :

They found Kex in his pit busily blasting bits of rock and wall, working to excavate more of the Temple structure. He didn't seem to notice them at all. Eventually the whole party crept up to the ledge above the pit to watch the beholder work, and to plan their attack. Suddenly the beholder picked up a huge rock with his telekenesis eye ray, and fired it across the room into the corner. The DM illustrated the suddeness of this move by picking up a soft toy and throwing it across the room where the game was taking place. As soon as he did this he pointed out to the whole party, who had all turned to look at the toy as it flew past, that they had indeed just been fooled by a beholder throwing a rock, and the beholder got a surprise round.

Wonderful :)

I'd have given the PCs a sense motive vs. the beholder's bluff to avoid getting fooled. I don't like the idea of giving characters the shaft based on their players' ineptitude.

I will, however, give that movie credit for one thing.

It's a great way to visually represent what a Beholder looks like. A lot of people don't get it from the description, and I don't always like to resort to just showing them the picture.

I really wish that the beholder had gotten a bit more screen time.

Hehe yeah well, it WAS a party of 8. They wasted the Beholder in a few rounds anyway. The DM had been upgrading a lot of the creatures encountered to make it properly challenging, so there's nothing wrong with taking a breather with a moment of humour is there? :) I very much doubt he would have done it if it was going to give the players a real, unavoidable disadvantage. Besides, they all failed their own personal bluff checks because they wouldn't have been surprised if they hadn't been distracted. Realism, eh? :)

Funny story.

You know, the juxtaposition of "stuffed toy" and "beholder" in your post got me thinking how great a beholder stuffed toy would be! At least I would buy one, and I think many other people would too! Who could resist a cuddly plush eye tyrant? It'd be so cute.

I would buy a stuffed umber hulk too, if they made one.

Hehe great idea..... The comic book store near me has some cute little stuffed Cthullu things, and one of them is quite Illithid-like. Maybe it's the start of a trend......

Yup. I'm with Abelard on the plush beholder front :)

My (non-gamer) girlfriend has been threatening for a while to make me a couple of dangle-from-the-rearview-mirror furry dice (d8 and d12, I thought)...must get round to that.

And there's a splendid alternative to Pokemon in my local gamestore - Pokethulhu (I'm not sure about the spelling), complete with cuddly yellow cthulhu...awwww!

...but a plush beholder is a beautiful idea...and a great way to introduce your four-year-old to D&D!!

Grumgarr - who says 'Pleeeeeeeeezzz Santa, just one plush monster?'

Thanks, everyone...I now know what to have my wife make for the gamer friends we haven't come up with something for.

To the fabric store!

Depleted uranium beholders are way better than plush beholders any day.

Ok...that's just strange.

Still, I told my wife about the idea last night, and she immediately dragged me to the craft and fabric stores. There will be plush Beholders for all of the gamers in my group in time for Xmas, and possably 1-2 leftover for Ebay or other nefarious purposes.

She seems to think that it's even possible to make a few slight alterations and make it as a hand puppet.

If anyone else here lays claim to owning a depleated uranium beholder, I will cease my blathering. Until then, long live the Plush Beholders, complete with small loop to hang them from the ceiling.

Andorax, would you please post a message (or - heh - e-mail me), when your wife's done? I want to buy one for my daughter.

Much obliged ;-)

The body for the first one was cut out last night, and she's planned this morning for "sewing time"...I might get a partial look by lunchtime.

Don't worry...at the very least, I'll be posting pictures as soon as there's one completed.

looking forward to seeing the beasties...

If your wife's doing a few, will she be using a sewing pattern? (he asked, in shame that he knew of such womanly matters :)

and if so, would she/you mind posting it?
(I got a tentative 'okay' on the fuzzy beholder front myself today.)

Grumgarr - who'll be including a little plastic pocket in the central eye, to insert a photo of my darling - awww

Re: me too, me too...
She tends to wing it...right now, she's just cutting body forms out, based off of a roughly football-shaped piece of paper she snipped out. Five forms make a rough sphere which, when stitched and turned right-side-out, might not be so rough.

I'll ask her if she wouldn't mind posting instructions. I'm sure she'll be flattered by the attention and interest. This is the only thread I let her read from this board, and that after scrolling down a bit to avoid material at the top...she's playing Lyssa in my RttToEE group (11th level Half-Orc Priestess of Kord).

More Plush Toys
It's too bad I used up my one wish to suggest a FAQ inclusion(*). If I had my wish back, I might wish for a Plush Thrommel. Imagine your player's reactions, "Okay, out of the dark corner, a form materializes, and you see...this!" :)

(*) Thrommel knows what I mean.

Andorax,

Since it was my idea, do you think you can send me one of the finished products? I promise, I will give plush beholder a good home!
