Demonically Infused Elemental Template
Has anyone used an elemental with this template on it yet? It is out of a Dragon Mag (don't have the number with me) and was recommended by the author of this great module himself to be used in a couple places in the adventure.
I have used one so far, in our last session, and it nearly resulted in a TPK. This template is a killer!
I'm not saying I dislike it at all. It is a great thing to throw at a party to surprise and challenge them, but beware. It's power is immense.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has used this template and what their thoughts are on it. Or the results of what happened with the fight. Or both.

Re: Demonically Infused Elemental Template
Yeah, I used one in the Temple of Fire, but I chickened out and let it be clobbered by a cone of cold in round 1. If I had let it stay, it might actually have made the combat challenging.
I also used one in the Water temple. That was fun. Right up until the point where the cleric Dispel Evil'ed it back to the watery pits of... whatever.
I fully intend to use them in the Outer Fanes.

Demonically Infused Elemental Template
What does the Demonically Infused template do? What issue of Dragon was it in (not that I have much chance of finding back issues)?

Re: Demonically Infused Elemental Template
Issue #285. The template boosts stats, gives some immunities and resistance - oh, and it hastes the elemental. Permanently.
I'm sorry, but being at work I don't have the spec.s.

Demonically Infused Elementals - nasty
I had the abandoned earth temple guarded by a demonically infused large earth elemental - it was a real wake-up call for my PCs who were about 6-7th level by this point.
The extra AC and partial action from the Haste effect meant it always landed a blow. I don't think the stat boosts made much of a difference.
Anyway, I've shied away from using the template since, and my group are nearing completion of the Outer Fane (10th-12th level). I was surprised by the ferocity added and almost wiped the floor with the party.
IIRC the template also adds SR, which your standard elementals don't get (can't remember if they gain this at Huge or Greater).
So yeah, use with caution - or if your party's had no real challenge in a while, drop this template on the next elemental they encounter and watch the fear begin
but be ready to mop up the mess.
Grumgarr - who also gives earth elementals their omitted (must be an error surely) Tremorsense

The Dragon Mag # is above, as are some of it's benefits. As stated, it gives the elemental a permanent haste effect, the smite good ability and a couple other things. SR, DR, and certain resistances as well as stat enhancers.
I placed the one I made as the guardian to the Earth Door in the Outer Fane. I reduced the elemental guardian to a Huge Earth Elemental and placed the Template on it. It comes out to a CR 12 creature, and with a party of 6 PCs I managed to kill 3 of them and send the other 3 fleeing back to the CRM.
SR 25, DR 30/+3, minimum damage of 20 points or so (that's not counting Power Attack, which it can add a whole bunch to) and 4 attacks a round with a full attack action is a killer. Oh, and let's not forget the 15' Reach as well.
I feel kinda bad about killing 3 PCs with this creature, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has used it only to find out how powerful it actually is.
Thanks for the replies & info. Any more would be more than welcome.

Re: Demonically Infused Elementals - nasty
Most the the elementals my PCs have/will face are demonically infused. Here's the rule I use:
If any PC/NPC summons an elemental anywhere on Oerth, there is a 5% chance it is demonically infused. The caster loses control of the creature if this happens. This was one of the hints that Tharizdun's power was icreasing.
If a wizard/cleric of Tharizdun/EEE summons an elemental, it has a 75% chance to be demonically infused, but control is retained. Doomdreamers increase this chance to 100%.
There is a 75% chance for any elemental within about 100 feet of any shrine or other place of power for Tharizdun/EEE to automatically become demonically infused. Within 10 to 20 feet, the chance becomes 100%. Non-worshippers of Thatrizdun/EEE automatically lose control.
Note that if a cleric of T is within 100 feet of a shrine, you roll twice. Or, you can roll once at 94% (0.25 * 0.25 = 0.0625 => 6%).
Needless to say, this makes clerics of T summon elementals all the time.
In the future, I also plan on using sorcerers/wizards with the Alienist PrC from Tome & Blood, as I have decided that the Far Realm (MotP) is where Tharizdun and his followers are from, and he wants to destroy the multiverse so the Far Realm is the only plane (after he's freed, of course).
I should note I'm trying to scale the adventure to take the PCs from 4th to 20th+, rather than 4th to 14th.
