"Jaroo" the Druid
It seems like I am busy posting today. I apologize for taking up so much of your bandwidth. :)

Someone else posted about the doppelganger "Jaroo" actually having levels in druid. Do you know who posted and where that post is? I did a search and failed to uncover it. I'd rather give credit to the originator. In the meantime, I statted Jaroo as a doppelganger druid 3. Anyone interested?

I mention this now because my party might actually stumble upon him (and Maridosen and Vacra) this Saturday. Jaroo and Maridosen just killed Yundi and Wyst in preparation for vacating the town in a couple of days, tying up some loose ends while the wagon journeys to Rastor with the 3'x3' statue. (I'll post an update to the log soon, but all other cult members are dead, except for Dunrat who is captured.)

I was thinking of giving Jaroo a couple of psion/telepath levels to make him a better spy.

That could have been me... Here's a link to my campaign log. There's some campaign-specific bits about "Jaroo" in one of the first few posts. Here's my version of him. I plan to spend a little more time shaping him. His stats are just that of a standard doppel right now and his equipment list is too meager, but here he is...

Thanks, Zans. Unfortunately, I had statted him, too. Here is what I did, since I offered. I made him 3rd level for two reasons: to be sort of on equal terms with Dunrat (CR 6) and to give him 2nd level spells. I want him to be listen to Dunrat's orders, but require it more of a give-and-take relationship. The 2nd level spells helps him remain more believable to Yundi (though odd) and he also gets trackless step, which might help him live.
Also, Zans I think you made an error on the saves and the # of feats. A doppelganger already gets alertness and dodge, so at 1st level he gets another feat.

Doppelganger Drd 3; medium-size shapechanger; HD 4d8+4+3d8+3 (39 hp); Init +1; Speed 30; AC 15 (+1 dex, +4 natural); Atk +6 melee (1d6+1, 2 slams); SQ Detect thoughts, alter self, immune to sleep and charm, nature sense, woodland stride, trackless step; AL NE; SV Fort +8, Ref +6, Will +9; Str 12, Dex 13, Con 12, Int 13, Wis 14, Cha 13.

If you use the MotW, I suggest the following:
1. Change "resistance" to "dawn".
2. Change "invisibility to animals" to "regenerate light wounds".
3. Change "entangle" to "sandblast".
4. Change "heat metal" to "briar web".
5. Change the potion of cure light wounds to a potion of animal logic.

One other thing, I'm going to put in the little twist that the doppelganger playing Jaroo was the one on the fourth level in the original ToEE, room 412. Thus, he knows a little bit about the lower levels of the ToEE, and if spared and asked the correct questions, he may provide the party with some additional information. He tried to escape the original ToEE, but was captured by Hedrack and used as a pawn. Eventually, he was converted to evil and learned the ways of a druid so that he could effectively take over for Jaroo in Hommlet.

Way cool!!! Excuse me while I beat my head against the wall.

For groups with players that don't know the old adventure, this would be a good tie-in to the ToEE. Wonder if there are other creatures that can be used in this fashion. Let me look.

Okay, in a blatant attempt to get on the BoB I looked in my old ToEE. There are only a few creatures that I have found and would use so far. My requirement was that they have to now be working for the ToAC (not one of the temples) and they have to be able to be captured and questioned. This would also be good foreshadowing of the return to the Recovered Temple.

1 - In the same room as the doppleganger is a half-orc prisoner. Could he not be Toridan, the half-orc with Dunrat, converted in much the same way as the doppleganger?

2 - One of the prisoners of the nodes is Darley, described as an alu-demon. Make her a tiefling instead (although it's much less powerful) and she becomes Vacra.

3 - In the Greater Temple are some gargoyles. One of those could be Claagingred, the Master of the Pit who lost his horn in the fight in the Greater Temple but lived.

4 - Level Four also contains ogres. One of these could be Wormspike, whose life was saved by Mereclar after he escaped the collapsed temple.

Once they have captured one or two, you may not want to change the rest as it may seemed too coinicdental. More later.

Alas, "Jaroo" was killed tonight (Saturday night), as well as his dire weasel, Maridosen, some hired muscle, and Elmo. It was quite a fight. On the plus side, he used up the entire necklace of fireballs. Also, Vacra got away. I really hope to update my log soon...two sessions behind (last week and tonight).

I was using PCGen, which I've been trusting (too much?) lately ;) The feats are indeed wrong, but because of the second druid level, not the first since that pushes him to CL 6 (see MM pg 14 on Creatures w/ Char Classes). As a result, I think yours has one feat too many (CL 7), though.

The saves, I think, are OK though:

Fort: +5 (Doppel) +3 (Drd) +1 (cloak) = +9
Ref: +5 (Doppel) +0 (Drd) +1 (cloak) = +6
Will: +6 (Doppel) +3 (Drd) +1 (cloak) = +10

Fun to read how you used him! I love the ToEE connection. IMC, one of my characters has a great background for him to be wormed into, so I can't use the ToEE throwback there...

You're absolutely right. I totally messed it up. I'll edit my post above with an update. About the saves, sorry, forgot the cloak. I guess without the + I didn't see it :)

Anyway, my party has decided to stop taking prisoners, so the hook with Jaroo was a waste of thought on my part. I hope your party uses it more wisely.
