disintegrate a death effect?
Is this a mistake? The clerics seem to add "pay fealty to
death" bonuses to disintegrate. If this were the case,
deathward would work against disintegrate and I am
fairly certain is has been ruled to only work against
spells with word "death" in their descriptor (such as
finger of death or slay living).

Has this been errata'ed?

Thanks!

This would probably be better addressed in the D&D Magic forum.

Understood, but I wanted to check with those that
have the module. I remember the thread a while back
elsewhere and, IIRC, disintegrate was generally ruled
to not be a death effect.

The question is, the discrepency is in this module -
I thought maybe Monte or someone else may have
shed more light on this. Given that those most likely
to own the module hang out here, I gave it a shot.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Sorry, I misunderstood your question.

Who specifically has disintegrate on their spell list?

In just skimming the module, The First has disintegrate on his spell list. It is listed with a higher DC due to his Paying Fealty to Death ability.

I don't think this is a Death descriptor spell. Therefore the DC should not be altered. Note, though, that is is a Domain spell for The First, so the little asterisk by it in the spell list is correct. It's only the other symbols there that are wrong.

Re: disintegrate a death effect?
Ok, here's where we open the can of worms, because there's no mention of this issue in the D&D FAQ, or the revisions to the PHB.

Death Ward in the PHB as written states:
Quote:
The subject is immune to all death spells and magical death effects. The spell does not protect against other sorts of attacks, such as hit point loss, poison, petrification, or other effects even if they might be lethal.
So the 25 gold piece question is: does disintegrate count as a magical death effect, or as 'other'.

I could see it both ways. On the one hand it's save or die. That sounds like the definition of a 'magical death effect' to me.

On the other hand, since it's transmutation and doesn't have the Death descriptor, I could understand an argument for it being an 'other effect'.

Bottom line is -- pick one. If it's a death effect, then up the DC, but let Death Ward work. If you decide it doesn't count as a death effect, then lower the DC.

Now that I think about it, constructs and undead are immune to death effects, but I don't think they'd be immune to disintegrate.

So, IMO, it's not a death effect.

-Thrommel, who isn't particularly keen on testing this new theory of undead immunity to disintegrate. No, no. He'll trust you on that one...

Thanks! That's what I wanted to confirm.
Should that be added to the "errata"?

I wouldn't want someone to be unnecessarily
turned to dust by missing the save by 3
(seems they added his spell focus too) -
the DC is high enough as is.

Re: disintegrate a death effect?
Disintegrate is not a death effect because it doesn't have the [death] descriptor. I suppose this is in IMO, but I believe it is according to the rules.

In any event, there are still errata to be made in the module. For instance, I think the First's base DC is 19 (correct), but adding spell focus necromancy should be 21, not 20. I don't have the module at work, so I'm not sure off hand what else is there. Anyway, eventually I'll attempt to make a pass through the stat blocks and offer up my 2cp (I think Krall is wrong also, even the errata'd block).
