Huge Howler CR and XP question
The errata says the the Huge Howler has a CR of 6. That would award 2,250xp to an average 5th level party.
However isn't the official way to award experience as per the Monster Manual to multiply the experience award by the increase in hit dice? So wouldn't the Howler still be "CR 3" but rather multiply the CR 3 XP award by 2 (as the Howler hit dice are increasing from 6 to 12)?
That would mean a 5th level party would only be awarded 750 x 2 = 1500 xp.
I may increase the award anyway to reflect the difficulty of this beast, but just wanted to confirm what the "official" way to do it was before I made my final decision.

I think that's been errataed, so that the CR goes up but the experience is as normal for the (increased) CR. The old way was to leave the CR the same and boost the XP award.
(edit: from the MM errata:

and if you replace the challenge rating note, you remove, I think, all reference to multiplying the XP).

Ah, thanks Tristan!
Then in actuality the CR of the Howler is 5, just as listed in the module, and not in our errata thread.

I think that's probably right, BTB. Ordinary (6 HD) howler = CR3, so double-HD (12 HD) howler = CR5. People certainly seem to have trouble with it though...

It's listed as a CR 6 in the thread on the basis of a discussion, quite a while back, where many of us concluded that bumping up the size of a creature makes a *huge* difference in it's power level, and thus, that you should +1 the CR for every size upgrade.
Still, you're right...the FAQ and Errata should be by the book, or marked as a house rule. Would one of you listkeeper types please make the appropriate correction?
