Chat's tactics vs. Utreshimon
My group just started RTTTOEE, and at the end of their first session in Hommlet, they're on their way to the moathouse. Where we left off, most of the party (B4, C4, R4, F2R1, W3) is on the old road, having just killed a wandering trio of hobgoblins, and been warned by Ol' Del about Utreshimon. The sixth party member (F1R2) has just left Hommlet on horseback, along with Xaod and Chatrilon, and will catch up with the rest (who are on foot) at the start of the next session.
The party doesn't trust Chat (he caught the rogue trying to pick Redithidoor's pocket, and has since tried to hire the party on behalf of a non-existant thieves guild to clear out the hobs in the temple, trying to distract them from the moathouse). Chat's read his Undectable Alignment scroll, and I threw in an encounter between the F1R2, Chat, Xaod, and Nareshi, where Xaod detected evil on Nareshi but not Chat, to throw the party off his scent a bit. (Think Nareshi as Newman, Xaod as Seinfeld...)
When they all meet up, I expect the party to decide to head back to Hommlet to beef up, before heading back to the moathouse to fight Utreshimon; the wizard rolled a natural 20 on her knoweldge arcana, so I handed her the MM to read up on Blue Dragons after Del's warning, and they're scared. They're Pelorites, so Yether will help them out with scrolls and potions, though it's too bad he doesn't have any protection from elements on hand. They were going to the moathouse to look for Spugnoir, and are friendly with Haunor and Renee, so they will probably get some freebies there if they ask right.
I'm trying to plan Chat's tactics for this encounter. I'm guessing he'll put 2+2 together about U trapping the cultists, so he'll stop trying to discourage the party, and try to beef himself up to help the party against U, dropping out at the end of the fight to assassinate a party member. Since the party will probably wait til the next day to return, he won't have the Undetectable Aligntment any more, which will be a problem with Xaod along; would Dunrat cast another one on him the next day? How much extra buffing would Dunrat and the cultists give Chat, in preperation for this fight?

I gave him three of these scrolls. IMC, one of the party members is a paladin. Plus, Chat's really out in the field as opposed to the other cult members, so it's easy to justify him needing them. You could also look into giving him an amulet or some other minor magic item (drop some charges from the invis wand perhaps), although realize that the party might end up with it then (as opposed to the scrolls, which get used up somewhat).
Bottom line for me was that it was going to make much better fiction in the end with the pal in the party, so I gave him the bonus scrolls.

OTOH, Xaod has already detected evil on Chat, but with no result, hasn't he? But an amulet of undetectable alignment 1/day is pretty neat. As a command word-item with 1 charge, I think it would be around 1500 gp, if you entered the stipulation that it could only be used by evil (I use it sparingly because it's basically screwing the players, but sometimes it's handy...).
If it were usable by all, it would be 2160 gp (SL [2] * CL [3] * 1800 [Command word item] / 5 [1 charge per day]).

Yes, today in game time, Chat and Xaod met for the first time, and Xaod pretty much always has his detect evil radar going (IMC, paladins can always just 'tell'). Xaod is pretty recognizable as a possible paladin, so Chat's been avoiding him until now, when he used his scroll to be safe.
But because of the 'always on' nature of that detect evil, at least IMC, Chat still has to worry about tomorrow. I don't want to give him a permanent item -- his alignment will be pretty obvious to the party once he tries (or suceeds!) to assassinate one of them, and I need to explain why Chat's been avoiding Xaod up until now (one PC actually saw Chat sneak out of the Welcome Wench, presumably to avoid Xaod, earlier).
So I'm thinking when they get back to Hommlet, Chat will go to the mill, and let Dunrat know about what's going on. Since they won't go back til the next day, so the PC spellcasters can prep appropriate spells, Dunrat will be able to prep whatever he likes to help Chat, too. I'm thinking he'll cast Undetectable Alignment, Magic Vestment on Chat's armour (+1), Endurance (strange, clerics get Bulls Strength and Endurance, but not Cats Grace, never noticed that before), and of course Endure Elements (electricity). Vacra doesn't seem to have any of the good buffing spells in her spellbook, so she's no help.
Would Dunrat do anything else to help Chat against Utreshimon?

Which might be a very good reason to change that house ruling. IMHO, the paladin should still know when to use his divine insight rather than trust it to go off. It's a matter, I should think, of using his own wisdom rather than always trusting someone else to immediately tell him when something is amiss.
