Thrommel's Unhallowed Silence question
Hello all. I've got a (hopefully) quick question for any of you who have already played through the Outer Fane. See page 120, area 27. This is Thrommel's coffin room. It's protected by an unhallow spell, and there is a silence spell tied to the unhallow. However, in the 'tactics' section of the room, it reads: "If [Thrommel] hears movement above (Listen +13)..." If the room is silenced, how can Thrommel hear anything? I have two guesses:

1) The silence only affects those of good (or maybe non-evil) alignment. This way, perhaps the PCs can make a sound by doing something like walking or fighting, but not speak. Maybe.
2) The entire room is silenced, period. In this case, I'd say the text in the 'tactics' box is wrong.

How did those of you who've been through this area handle this one? I searched, but didn't come up with anything related tothis question...

Re: Thrommel's Unhallowed Silence question
This is my thinking, which may be specious.

Area of effects do not extend through solid barriers. A heavily booted person walking across the floor would produce vibrations through the floor which could be heard in the space below.

Imagine the floor surface as an infinitesimal boundary. Above that boundary the Silence stops all sound. However, because the spell's affect does not extend into the floor (not even a little) then anything that comes into contact with the floor's surface will cause a vibration that transmits through the floor and can be heard from below.

Again, this is open to the interpretation of whether the vibration of stepping on that infinitesimal boundary is stopped at that boundary and therefore wouldn't be transmitted downward.

Re: Thrommel's Unhallowed Silence question
The following quote comes from the SRD on the unhallow spell, the highlights are by me:

Quote:
Finally, the character may choose to fix a single spell effect to the unhallow site. The spell effect lasts for one year and functions throughout the entire consecrated site, regardless of its normal duration and area or effect. The character may designate whether the effect applies to all creatures, creatures who share the character's faith or alignment, or creatures who adhere to another faith or alignment.

In short, the person who placed the unhallow probably made it so that it does not affect followers of Tharizdun.

I think that both explanations are quite good. I've taken the liberty of adding the whole shebang to the FAQ.

...it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
