XP bonus for Journals
Hey everybody. A DM i once had offered a 10% XP bonus if a player would do a post-session writeup. I couldn't get my players interested, so i bumped it up to 15% and our Bard finaly took the bait.
Do any of you others that have all these campaign logs offer a reward for doing so?
I find the player logs are fantasticly helpfull for understanding what the players are thinking, and taloring the sessions to what they seem to enjoy (and thus remember to write about).
Thanks,
Kenmis

Re: XP bonus for Journals
I do it all the time, but seldom offer bonuses for it. I usually can find at least one person willing to do it. I personally do journals for almost all my characters.

Re: XP bonus for Journals
My dm used to offer 10% towards our next level, while dm now while in the banewarrens offers a flat 10%. I think if the players arent interested in writing the journals don't force them to. 15% is quite a bit to give fo this, if they dont appreciate it screw them.

Re: XP bonus for Journals
Just as a neat idea why not deal with it in game and in character.
For example a scholarly NPC could offer the character(s) and in game payment for an in game record.
Of course you may have to deal with characters that might hide or shade the truth, but still kind of neat and avoids the metagame feel.

Re: XP bonus for Journals
I suppose in your case it might be different (no one wanted to do it), but I don't think offering an XP bonus for righting a journal would be fair unless you let everyone do it. As a player, I would certainly do it because 10% is a lot. I like Taxman66's idea of doing it IC. I do the log myself (the DM, obviously) for two reasons: 1. to keep the group very interested in the campaign and 2. to make it impartial. If one of the players did it I don't think the others would feel like they had an equal impact, which they would not (how could you when it is written in first person).

Re: XP bonus for Journals
That's the difference between a log and a journal. The journal gets to be the character's subjective view of what's going on. If I do a journal for a character, then the character also a) has to be literate, b) pays for the materials, and c) has it on his person.
For campaign logs, I don't tend to do them. As a DM I don't feel the need and as a player I don't want to go to that work to tell the story from the generic point of view.
I wouldn't offer xp for it in either case. D&D isn't like Amber, say, where player contributions are built into the system. A journal has to be a labor of love or you get entries like "January 5th: killed bear. January 6th: killed bear zombie. Dellon raised by Valla of New Verdigris. Owe Silver Blades a quest." Where's the fun in that? Hmm...it does sound kinda cute.

Re: XP bonus for Anything
I have to say, I'm a strong believer in XP bonuses for a journal, for painting a mini, for just about anything extra-curricular that enhances the game.
The classic example is a character history. If someone spends six hours writing a character history and stuffs it chock full of plot hooks, they deserve more xp than the schmoe with the PC named 'Bob the Fighter'.
Here's an excellent example.
If it enriches the game, or makes my job easier (stuff like bringing miniatures, tracking initiative, or writing a log that everyone can refer to) then that player deserves some type of reward.
And if there are multiple people who want to write the journal or log, let them take turns.
The way I look at it, you get 'paid' with XP for showing up at the game and killing monsters or bartering with the High Priest. If you're willing to put in overtime, as it were, you should also be rewarded.
Btw, I also like Taxman's idea of NPCs hiring an adventurer to provide a journal, etc. That's a really cool twist. Makes me want to run a Lewis & Clark style campaign.
-Thrommel, who usually ends up running a Lewis & Martin style campaign. (Hey! That's funny if you're sixty.)

Re: XP bonus for Anything
One of my DM's gives 10% session bonus if the player is the only one doing a journal or 5% to each if more than one do it.
I love it because it gives me a chance to improve my writing skills and to be able to look back at a great campaign many moons from now. Oh, and the extra XPs are nice too.
