Side Trek / Mini Adventure in or around Hommlet
Hello all, I could use a little help from the Hive mind on the next step in my Campaign.

Quick Back Ground...
The party has 6 PC's about half 5th and the other 6th level. THey have cleared out the Moat House, the cult in town except for Jaroo and just returned to Hommlet with their tails between their legs from Nulb.

The trip to & from Nulb was last night. They entered town around 10am with it raining as usual. THey skiped the Inn and wandered thru town, running to Lareth sitting on his porch with a pipe. Talked a little then attacked. Very close battle, but the party prevailed with very few spells left.

Then go back to the Inn to get out of the rain. With in 3 min are attacked by Wat and run scared. Then Run in to a Scrag as they try to cross bridge outta town. Kill it and run for home.
(ok so maybe that wasn't quick)

My probelm...
Party is back in Hommlet with 3 people hurting from Wat's Horrific Appearance, and only have 100gp between all of them. Are looking for something to generate some cash that does not involve Nulb or the temple. (the party thinks the adventure will be like orig and all the action will go down at the temple)

So I'm looking for something that will meet this with out offsetting their level to much.

Odd...they've nothing to hock from clearing out the Moathouse to pick up a bit of cash? I'm assuming they want to repair their damage before setting forth for Rastor, right? Or did they miss the note from offing Dunrat?

My best suggestion would be to either have Elmo and/or Xaod suggest that there's hobgoblin bandits at the Temple that need cleared out, or else introduce a group of human bandits, say south of the town a ways, with some decent loot.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

Mine did as well. They absolutely refused to believe anyone that the temple was collapsed in the lower levels (which doesn't make sense, btw) and that only hobgoblins lived in the upper floor. It finally took an encounter with friendly Kella to make them believe otherwise. Elmo and Y'Dey could tell them a similar story that there is nothing there, REALLY! :)

The elite hobgoblins have some nice stuff, so that is definitely the recommended choice. Or, you could have a few of them (all of them) be on a scouting mission too close to Hommlet. An outlying farmer could come into town screaming for help, Elmo is conveniently busy elsewhere, so the party has to check it out. Once there, they find the place ransacked, burning, with the hobgoblins just leaving.

Anyway, maybe you need to make them sell some stuff in order to get cured? Is the party composed of treasure hoarders? :)

Andorax.... to answer your ?'s

1. They already spent all the gold the got from the moat house (including selling equipment)

2. They got the note about Rastor, and even heard it mentioned as the Temple of All Consuption (DM slip) :-)

3. They were on their way to the temple of their own choosing, but didn't make it thru Nulb to get there. (as I mentioned above, they belive the big part of the adventure will be at the temple) Also since Nuld was so tuff they don't think they are ready to get to the Temple yet.

I'll see if I can send a few more hints about the temple being less of a threat or just try a side trek.

SO if anyone has a good idea (possibly stated and such if possible) for a short adventure for a goupr of 5th & 6th level members, I'm all ears.

I think it's great they're being bull-headed :) Mine have strayed that way a few times and I think some may feel that way as players (it IS Return...), but they are doing their best to RP their characters well enough. I think it punches home the two surprises better that way (ToAC and then back to ToEE).

I would suggest, as the others have, to push them toward the ToEE since they should be able to handle it and it will also push your plot forward toward Rastor after they clean it out with no options left. I would think if you put some arbitrary thing in between just to get them some loot, they might be even more frustrated when they actually decide to go back to the ToEE.

They don't really have to go through Nulb to get to the Temple, remember. Try gradually escalating the hob threat for Hommlet again. Have Elmo or his scouts notice that they have begun raiding again, pushing south toward Hommlet again. If you had big U retreat there (they killed him IMC), you might be able to really suck them in since they should be more powerful now. IMC, Elmo and Spugnoir played up that Nulb was a place they didn't visit at all anymore because of the danger but that they kept some tabs on the ToEE. If it's not too late to be hokey, you could play this fact up again in discussions with them.

In the end, if you need to force their hand you can always have Elmo decide that it's time to clean the Temple out because the mess that just happened at the Moathouse caught him with his pants down. Load him up with 4-6 militia members (or even Badgers) and invite the party along and I bet they'll find it hard to resist. Depending on how big your party is and what you want to do at the ToEE, you can either have a fun big battle with all of those or you can 'get rid' of Elmo's force before they fully penetrate. Have Elmo's group scout separately from the party and have them jumped by a hob scouting party a mile or two out. The militia will probably go down quick and Elmo would probably survive without much trouble. But maybe he's hurt so he wants to go back to town to get better/more forces? If the party doesn't see the battle, you can craft that skirmish to go however you want.

Thanks for the input everyone.

The other part of my problem right now is the party is in need of 9 Restoration spells to get the ability point 3 of them lost to Wat's Horrific Appearance.

They have already spent most of the money they got from the treasure/equipment out at the moat-house and the cult members in town.

I suspect they will not go any where they think is more than slightly dangerous untill they are healed.

I'll try to come up with a way to get them involved with the hobgoblins, but would prefer that encounter to take place at the Temple.

Keep the ideas coming floks.

Have them make a deal with Y'Dey.

In return for performing some action, they get the restorations. That action can be investigate rumors of activity at the old temple site, destroy any evil creatures attempting to make use of it.

The big problem is they will probably not go back out toward the temple until they are at least partialy healed. (and feel they are ready to handle Nulb and what they assume is a tuffer Temple beyond)

I think I got 4 points of strength on all 3 people that failed their saves against Wat.

I'm almost tempted to let them sell the few items they have saved as party treasure to get the big stuff fixed and then just suck it up untill the party cleric can cast Restoration her self.

The only problem with this is they wont do anything.

On the other hand I don't want to just hand them a quick fix anytime things get a little tough. :-)

I have to find some middle ground, and quickly the next game is in a week.

if they're too passive... there are ways to make em hurry up

what season is it in your curent campaign?

in mine, it's summer and it's usually warm in the area (home made world, part FR, part greyhawk, huge part imagination)

during the (converted) month july, the temperature drops noticeable, it's a lot more overcast and stuff... strange signs that there are powers at work that are influencing the very essence of existence (why not overexagerate a little here)

so if you're party is slow to move, make people complain about the weather and stuff, have the temple perform a sort of augury and make them report to the PC's that there something wrong with the balance of power and stuff like that!

they SHOULD get the message :evil
