Fun with Tarren
Remember that neutral evil druid in the mines, Tarren? We just had very fun session when players run into him before assaulting fire temple for the first time. I made him cannibal and let it slowly come to the players. At first he said to them that he didn't like those fire temple people at all and had questioned and killed couple of them. He did have a leg bone sticking out of the mossy ground. They bought those concontions from him and asked couple questions, then attacked the temple. They decided to back out after encountering that smoky room with devil head, fearing that some kind of trap or setup was ahead since alarm had been sounded. Party took that elven female warrior (Virith) as prisoner, questioned her a bit and took her out of the temple. Then they went back to the druid. :evil They thought to frighten her a bit to tell more about the temple or they'd give her to the druid. But after a lengthy dialog where it became clear that he "loved tender elven flesh", licked his sharpened teeth party samurai had enough and attacked... He was visibly revolted about the idea of that druid and especially eating some raw meals... Well, they defeated the druid and bear after short skirmish (bear was pretty mean, slashed up main fighter to last 10 hit points) and searched the room. They even dug up the ground a bit and found over 10 quite recent corpses. :evil

Anyone who likes some vile moments in game should try this if party feels like negotiating at least sometimes. If you decide to try using Tarren, I suggest you use more subtle appearance for the druid and bear, those skulls and skull tattoos make it bit too clear what kind of nasty character he is. Oh, and do remember that he CAN change to large animal form if combat comes up, and give him natural spell since RttToEE was written before splatbooks. That's all folks.

This is one of the first original ideas I've seen about Tarren, so if nobody minds, I'm BoB'ing this.

Good idea ;) I already did the masochist thing with the female cleric in the Air Temple. Nothing can spice up a roleplaying session like something vile if your players can handle it :evil

Hmm

Do tell me more about that.. I am dying to know.. I think I know what you mean, but I want to heard it anyway!!

About Tarren, very nasty about him being a cannibal, but it makes sense because his alignment is neutral evil, but one of my idea is that Tarren secretly want to take over one of the temple and set up with plant domain instead. He want both Earth and Water since they are most likely to set up the most fertile plant temple.

Cannibal, very interesting.. even lawful Samurai will find that replusive..

I see Tarren as great NPC and should be used accordingly!

Re: Hmm
The PCs in my campaign captured her alive and they questioned her. At first she seemed to be perfectly sane, though with a sharp calculating edge and no conscious what so ever (highlighted by her reaction of the death of her lover). She did try to seduce the male PCs, though she never actually did so directly. Then at one point she insulted the cleric of Thor who hit her hard in the face. The look on the face of that player when actually realized she liked being hit, was priceless. They stopped questioning her, realizing that she actually loved being handled roughly and they just made a deal with her. This might look weird for good PCs, but they were all at the end of their resources after the battle with the Air Temple and they were not ready to face the ogres and cloakers. They were also combat weary and they liked the idea to gain more information while working for the air temple.

All in all, they utterly dispise her, but they are not revolted enough to really want to kill her yet. Since they fully expact her to betray them anyway, they are waiting for that to happen to give themselves a better conscious. They do not like betraying people ;)

Well
well down, madfox.. you did magnificent job protraying Choralth, considering that she have half orc for a lover with amazingly low charisma. We didn't think that half orc would treat her right in the first place. I will try to adopt your ideas of how to use her as a character!

Tarren.. my question is.. how did he EVEN live in CRM in the first place?

I gave Tarren a tunnel which lead outside on his cave, he had a large boulder that covered the entrance to it on the cave. He even suggested to the characters that they may use it if they attack temple again and offered nice resting place for them in his cave. "I'll keep watch for you and warn if the temple people come this way..." :evil

Re: ---
I don't have the adventure with me at present, but doesn't it say that some of the temple forces tried hiring Tarren? So my guess is, he was invited to the temple, didn't like what he saw and escaped into the mines.

Or he might be an Underdark druid who crawled up from the basement, so to speak.
