Tactics of the Hommlet Cultists IMC
The final battle between the PCs and the Cultists of Hommlet turned out wonderfully last year and I thought I'd like to share the setup and climax with the board from the best of my memory.
1. The party is aided by a druid (PC) personally acquinted with Jaroo and Yundi.
2. The party makes first contact with the cultists in the Inn of the Welcome Wench - in form of Maridosen (they are unknowing of this).
3. The party druid is lured to the mill - for a meeting with Jaroo - and decides to go alone on his affairs (Chondathan druids are very distrustful of outsiders).
4. The party druid is captured and tortured in the mill.
5. Party rogue breaks in to investigate the Old Trading Post. He is shadowed by Vacra.
6. Vacra attempts to set off the alarm in the shop and alarm the Badgers in order to entrap the party Tiefling rogue, but fails and escapes.
7. The barbarian/ranger and the human fighter follow the party druid's tracks to the Mill and find him tortured in the cellar.
8. The cultists in the mill ambush the two party members and beat them into escape. Druid is left behind.
9. Barbarian/ranger is held by hold person during the escape and charmed. Human fighter lunges into the river after taking a bolt in the back and pretends to disappear - slain.
10. The cultists gather - with the charmed barbarian/ranger and captured druid - and take off towards the Moathouse with a carriage.
11. The party gathers in full strength and take off in pursuit.
12. When the party catches up a great fight ensues, with arrows flying from horse to cart, rogues jumping from horse to horse and a spectacular carriage crash - to summarise .
13. In the end, all the cultists are slain, two characters are on negative hit points (not including the druid, who amazingly manages to survive the cart crash despite his horrible injuries), and the barbarian/ranger is charmed and confused (poor guy got killed next session in the Moathouse).
It was quite enjoyable and a very dynamic evening with lots of different things going on and I think the threat to the PCs becomes much more menacing when the cultists actively prepare the undoing of the PCs as a threat (even though, hiding and waiting may have been a more successful approach).

Tactics (Revised by memory!)
The final battle between the PCs and the Cultists of Hommlet turned out wonderfully last year and I thought I'd like to share the setup and climax with the board from the best of my memory.

4. The party druid is captured and tortured in the mill.
5. Party rogue breaks in to investigate the Old Trading Post. He is shadowed by Vacra.
6. Chatrilon attempts to set off the alarm in the shop and alarm the Badgers in order to entrap the party's Tiefling rogue, but fails and escapes.
Human fighter lunges into the river after taking a bolt in the back and pretends to disappear but manages to drag himself out of the water further down the stream.
10. The cultists gather - with the charmed barbarian/ranger and captured druid - and take off towards the Moathouse with a carriage.
11. The party gathers in full strength and take off in pursuit.
12. When the party catches up a great fight ensues, with arrows flying from horse to cart, rogues jumping from horse to horse and a spectacular carriage crash - to summarise it quickly.
13. In the end, all the cultists are slain, two characters are on negative hit points (not including the druid, who amazingly manages to survive the cart crash despite his horrible injuries), and the barbarian/ranger is charmed and confused (poor guy got killed next session in the Moathouse).
14. Chatrilon Unosh catches up with the party - invisible - near the Moathouse.
15. During the fight between the party and Utreshimon, Chat manages to make his way to the dungeon below the Moathouse and warns the cultists, setting up effective defenses against the party.
16. Near-TPK when the party tries to enter the Moathouse. They retreat - having slain most of the defenders - to lick their wounds....
It was quite enjoyable and a very dynamic evening with lots of different things going on and I think the threat to the PCs becomes much more menacing when the cultists actively prepare the undoing of the PCs as a threat (even though, hiding and waiting may have been a more successful approach).
