Anyone have any idea what Big U would be worth?
OK here it is plain and simple we just ended our session with the party slaying Big U the blue dragon and they want to drag Big U back to town to get some cash for the hide, scales, heart, and whatnot. There would only be a few NPCs that would have the gold to spare but what if they do manage to drag him back to town? There plan by the way is to get a team of horses together (30 or so) and drag away. What is all this stuff worth? Any ideas?

From what i remember the G.P. limit in Hommlet is pretty low and I can't remember any N.P.C.'s who would have a need for the dragon's remains.

Several large horses and a large wagon should be enough to move him. Good luck to the PC getting those horses that close to the dragon ... I think that the smell of a dragon would be enough to move them very skittish.

Besides if the PC's can't get a buyer in Hommlet they are going to have to take it the next nearest town. I don't remember but it was a good chunk of distance away. The smell of that dragon while they cart it across the countryside ought to attract every hungry predator in a large area.

Assuming it hasn't rotted by then.

30 horses? Unless you upgraded Utrishemon he is only the size of a big human (medium sized). Two horses and a wagon should be more then enough. There is hardly enough scale on him to craft a scale mail for a small sized character. I doubt his corpse is really that valuable, though Burne might be willing to spend some cash for alchemical research. Remember that he is just a young dragon and that in 3rd edition special components are not nearly as important as in 2nd edition. The PCs of my group have beaten one dragon -not Utreshimon- and they sold the head to the tavern in return for several nights of rest and free drinks for the same time.

The gold piece limit of 800gp is a limit on items you can buy, not on what you can sell. The town has 38,000 gp in assets (ready cash) that is used to determine what hte party can sell. This effectively means that they can unload all the loot they might gather from the moathouse, cultists, temple, and Nulb.

The dragon carcass is not going to be worth much. By the time they drag it to Hommlet, the meat will likely have turned, and the armorer might be able to make a single shield out of it, or hide armor for a halfling. I like the idea of selling the head to a taxidermist or the Inn. My group left the body in the woods.

DragonHide
I allowed my charactors to salvage enough to make a dragonhide sheild. I forget how much i charged them for it, but it gave the user Elec resistence 5. Everyone seemed pretty happy with that.

Odly enough, when my players killed Vranthis, they didn't bother to recover any of the body. I'm guessing that means my method of using dragonhide is balanced enough that it's still rare and usefull.

There is not much of Utreshimon to use. Likely, the meat will spoil before they get it to Hommlet, so Dragonmeat (very tasty but very expensive) is not going to get them much, maybe a couple free nights at the inn. If one of them has a skill in profession (cook), then he might remember how to preserve meat (with salt) but the party probably doesn't carry that with them.

However, the hide will still be useful. The local leatherworker might be able to make dragonhide boots and gloves for the party (there's not enough for armor). IMC, I set the DC at 25, I think (it's been awhile) for the leatherworker. I also said that she could only make 2 pairs of boots and 2 pairs of gloves (or some combination thereof).

Re: Anyone have any idea what Big U would be worth?
The latest Monster FAQ (v11222002) at WoTC has a nice Q&A related to this, including a table for what kinds and size armor you can make based on the size of the dragon. The comment in MM refers to Hide armor specifically, which is the lowest AC armor you can make from dragonhide. So big U, being Medium allows you to make a Small Hide armor. The table expands this up to better armors (for decreasing sized creatures).

The question also asks "what if you only want to make shields", which is what my players wanted to do a few months back. The FAQ says 2 shields for every suit of armor you can make. So I'm glad I got that roughly right, but now I don't know about the details. Are shields sized for builds like armor is? I've never really worried about this before. Does this mean big U can make two small or large shields sized for Small creatures? *shrug*...

Anyway, IMC, the party built a makeshift sling and dragged him behind a horse all the way back to town. They took him right to Naddy's to get the hide made into shields and had her find someone who could do taxidermy. They donated the stuffed head to the WW :)

IMC, the Monk ran to town to pick up a wagon and bring it back. After spending a couple hours to load it on, they wheeled it in fairly short time. It hadn't spoiled and half the town turned up at Telna's, where they were having a cookout. The party divided the usable scales up between them. Most still have them as keepsakes, but the Cleric was multi-classing as a Wizard (Boccobite) and took her share of the scales to Verbobonc to have a spellbook manufactured that would be resistant to electricity. The cookout was a pretty good RP session. Tupper (Smithy, p15) had already annoyed the group with some racist slur. He showed up with his Teamster buddies and the Monk tripped him for good measure after he tried to congrat the group (she really had it in for him). After the racist creeps slinked off to plan their confederacy, Chatrilon made one of his moves. He got caught off guard and wound up leading the group to the area where the Mill is before ducking into an alley & becoming invisible. Anyway, it was my players' idea to have a cookout and I described the taste as freezer-burned.
