Hints on Lareth !?
Hi there,

I was wondering how the players are to come by some hints on Lareth´s existense before they meet him in Nulb ... or even before they find his room in the Moathouse? Nierethi seems to be the only one who obviously knows about him.
So the question is, is Lareth a familiar name to people in Hommlet, or at least to Elmo, Y'Dey and the likes ?

I mean, the room description of his chamber in the moathouse seems to assume that the players already might know then what room they stumbeled upon there.
Cause otherwise it´s just another corpse lying around, right ?

Glad for some enlightenment here ... THANKS :)

Kyle

The corpse in the moathouse dungeon is mostly for old-timers who played the original RttToEE. If they mention a corpse to people in Hommlet, those in the know (Y'Dey, Elmo et al - as you mentioned) will smile knowingly and maybe bore the PCs to tears with their story.

If your PCs don't go to Nulb (as mine never did), they won't hear about Lareth until they get hold of Hedrack's journal.

Re: Hints on Lareth !?
This is indeed a very obscure clue. To get the most out of it the players need to search the skeleton to find the medallion, a knowlege check to identify the medallion's symbol and a heal check to note that the remains bear marks of disease and no signs of violence.

The clues means nothing to adventurers with no knowledge of the history concerning the moathouse and its "New Master". However, if Nierethi is involved in any way then these clues point to the fact that the skeleton can not be Lareth.

Some of the other prominent NPCS like Y'dey, Elmo, Rufus and such could also come to this conclusion, as they probably heard the battle stories from the PCs who killed Lareth.

However, without Nierethi right there on the scene prompting a Heal Check what PC is going to want to determine the cause of death of this nameless corpse? Overall, what
PC's regularly perform a Heal Check on randomly discovered skeletal remains?

If have a player that does ask for that Heal Check but has no history of such behavior and has no obvious reason to do so, then you might become suspicous that they have some "inside information" on the adventure.

Re: Hints on Lareth !?
I dropped two clues: first, I had Nierethi try to hire them to gather information about Lareth for him at the moathouse, but that didn't work -- the party just assumed he was a cultist, and put him on their list of people to kill when they have the time.

The second, which I've prepped but won't actually give them until the start of the next session, was from Spugnoir. When they freed him from the dungeon, he drew them a map of the dungeon to help them out. It's not complete; the only secret doors he knows about are the two on either side of the secret staircase, he doesn't know about the ghoul caves/altar, and as far as he knows the portcullis is always down, and the only way around it is dimension door (though he will offer to sell the barbarian a potion of bulls strength, to take care of it in her own subtle way). Anyway, Spugnoir's labelled Lareth's room as such, which I'm hoping will trigger a memory from Nierethi's request a while ago and get the party into research mode. He also labelled the locations of the ghouls/ghasts (most of which the party's already killed), the gnolls room, Gren's storage room, and where the clerics are sleeping and working. Sadly, the clerics have moved a bunch of monsters around, to better defend against the party's third consecutive day of raiding, so it's not a perfect map, but it should still help.

Well, in my case the groups cleric/monk indeed asked to examine the skeleton for the reason of death (rolled a natural 20 on it) and he also identified the amulet, but still they don´t know what to do about it ... no blame to them though !

Anyway, thanks for answering ...
oh, and I got another question. What about the four sided statue (the little one) ? Does it have any purpose ?

The one in 32A? None, really. Except give the PCs some insight into the Tharizdunian mythos and light the light of recognition in old-timers' eyes.

Re: the statue in 32A
My players thought this statue was the 'obelisk' mentioned in Geynor Ton's journal.

:rollin

Imagine their horror when they saw the real obelisk...

(incidentally, their latest theory for the statue, which they're now carrying around in the back of the wagon, is that it's some sort of 'instruction manual' for some cult ritual: you collect all the items shown on the statue - mask, wavy-bladed sword, sceptre etc - and then use the stuff hidden in the larger statue with those items in some way. They're so keen on the theory, in fact, that I've already decided to make the Sword of Water wavy-bladed, just to play along with their idea...)

Re: the statue in 32A
IMC, the lone surviving cultist, Vacra, took the smaller 4-sided statue back to the CRM. That's the only relic the bad guys got, but IMO it is an important one. Any idea who should get it back at the CRM? I'm thinking she would use the South Gate. There, Kellial would take it from her and give it to Fachish, who would then give it to Naquent in the Outer Fane. Perhaps Naquent rewards Fachish with a trip to the Infernal Machine, and then Fachish rewards Kellial with the Sword of Air. Vacra becomes Kellial's lover, and Choranth becomes jealous with a rival "woman" in the area. What do you think?

Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, the players don't pick up on the clues. IMC, the party took Nierethi with them when they were exploring the walled-off section. They wouldn't let him take the skeleton, but he studied it and wrote some descriptions down before they hacked it to pieces. Later, as part of a regular conversation, that he didn't think that the skeleton was Lareth and gave the reasons. When they later killed Lareth, they never knew who it was (paladin detected evil, everyone attacked).

With players who attack evils on sight, I'd certainly recommend that you let them meet, say, an evil merchant or a merchant with an evil bodyguard. When they go medieval on him, it'll be murder.
