Fun for the whole family: camping in the CRM
So, my players, having defeated the Main Gate, and having nearly wiped out the Earth Temple have decided to make the Main Gate their campsite. They do the hit and run raids, and whatnot, and when they get beat up too badly, they retreat to the safety of their new camp. They finally twigged to the fact that every time they leave a dungeon, particularly a well defended fortress of a dungeon, it gets re-manned by the time they drag themselves back to it.

Now, I know how ridiculously deadly this module can be, and I also don't want them to feel that there's no way to make progress. If they leave, I'll restock, of course...slowly, but I'll restock. However, I also don't want them to get too comfortable either. To that end, I'm adopting a couple of the ideas from this board, particularly the Insanity ones. They've managed to avoid everything interesting so far...didn't go into the moathouse basement, didn't find the four sided statue (my PCs are terrified of really closed in tunnels. Can't think why. 8) ). So, to intoriduce this little concept, I've decided that since they've spent 4-5 days in the CRM, they're getting a little bleed from the weirdness in the Spire. Each PC (I have 5) gets a dream about an Element, with one PC (the paladin, natch) getting one about Tharizdun. I plan to have them make Will saves when they wake up, DC 13. If they fail, they get one point of Insanity. This'll happen every 5 days or so...more often the closer they get to the Spire.

Thoughts on this? I don't know if it's too harsh...but I do want to get them to move and not take the safety of the cleared area for granted. Random encounters are of course an option, but I was looking for something with a little more flair.

The insanity point might be a little much, especially if you plan to apply it fairly (i.e. to all of the bad guys in the mines and Outer Fane).

As for the main gate, who's gonna miss it? It will not matter much if indeed they can maintain it as a "safe" haven. It will only last as long as they have not taken down two temples or otherwise caught the attention of Hedrack.

As for other ideas to keep them moving, perhaps a spider eater (with rider) comes to deliver some supplies. "Hey, I'm here to deliver the...Who are you guys?"

Following up on the idea that violence breeds power for Tharizdun, any large area in the CRM or Fanes that remains peaceful for too long starts to develop cracks, emit a foul odor, and leak purplish smoke. Eventually the area becomes unbreathable and inhospitable (treat like a permanent acid fog spell). A cleric of Tharizdun of at least the 7th level can banish the effect with a bloody sacrifice.

Feel free to go with the disturbing dreams...just lose the mechanic for insanity. Descriptives and so forth are more than enough to give the feel you want here, and they'll have enough trouble camping when they've wasted their second temple.

Besides, 5 days isn't long at all yet. Many groups abandon the CRM at least once for a weeks-long trip to Verbobonc and back. If they're staying on-site, and keep working at it, this level of persistance and determination should be rewarded, not punished.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

Yeah - what Andorax said.

My group are very creeped-out and have had numerous disturbing dreams - some of them while they were awake!

Not so much that they don't trust their own senses, but things like:
Their dead brother giving them sorrowful dead-eyed looks (with me as DM crouching beside the player and whispering in his ear that's who I was, and I was right there) then vanishing.
Dreams of hunting through moonlit woods, catching their prey and throwing it to the ground, to see their own terrified face staring wild-eyed back at them (or one of their companions) before tearing out its throat with their teeth and waking, heart racing, having...enjoyed it.

That kind of thing will get the madness message across without 'doing' anything to the PCs.

And I reserved this for folk who ate the Dark Fruit, though I'm now extending it to those with 'demonic additions' bwa-ha-haa!

OK...I see the point about the Insanity score, and I'll drop that from my plans for now. I think I'll need to rustle up something special though...they're getting pretty complacent in the main gate, leaving all their stuff, assuming it's completely safe. The SERs are a good idea...that would freak them out nicely, as would the occasional envoy from one of the other complexes.
