Need advice on Moathouse!
Ok, so the party has entered the moathouse, killed Big U (at the cost of a PC) and has slain the Ooze. Now they are camping in the backroom, just beyond the main hall.
For obvious reasons, they have the attention of Chat and he has tracked them and is now invisible nearby. What will he do? I have a few options;
#1 Kill a PC and head back to town to alert the cultists there
#2 Go down and set up defence with the clerics and when battle ensues, attempt to kill a PC
#3 Hang around for a while and enjoy the developments

What would he do?

I'm leaning towards #2. Under comparable circumstances, I had cultists come rushing up one set of stairs to the attack, whilst Chat slipped in from behind through the other set of stairs and made his strike.

His priority here isn't going to be to off a PC and run for it (a chancy proposition at best). His best bet is to get downstairs, make sure the cultists are warned, and coordinate his attack with theirs.

Ok, the PC's have searched the area of the second stairs, but flunked their rolls (YES). If any ambush were to be set up, then what would you think is the best place?
27, 30 or 33?

Gren and the skeletons will guard the staircase, she bolsters the undead and then runs to 27
I'm leaning to 27, since then the cultists have a clear chance to drop the portcullis by simply opening up the door there.
I think Garrik and Ysllansh with the Gnolls should do this along with Chat. Gren will join them.
Geynor should get the Ghasts and Ghouls together in room 30 and wait for the sounds of battle and then come from the back. Since the portcullis is down, the PC's can't escape. This works quite well Vice versa too.
Is this a sure TPK in the making or is it an interesting battle?

Keep in mind that I have 6 players....

The Ghouls are too powerful for the present cleric compliment to command...all they can manage to do is keep them at bay. Treat them as a random factor in the area, not another "trooper" type.

In fact, thinking back, I keep wishing I'd put them back in the maze of passages...helps keep it from being a boring "well, I keep going until I find something" fest.

Also, I'm not sure the cultists are even aware of the secret passage from the torture chamber to the crypts.

You might consider using the portcullis not to trap the entire party, but just part of it. Use it to split them up (and hopefully land on someone). Chat can stand (invisibly) in the corridor watching them, and just shout "now" at the appropriate time, then step aside and wait for an opportunity.

I used the portcullis to split up the party. I was able to isolate the monk long enough to knock him down and throw him to the top of the obelisk. Check out my Session Three for more details. It worked quite well as an ambush. With Chatrilon present it will be a sure thing.

Re: Need advice on Moathouse!
I used the portcullis to slow down the party (it's very very difficult to lift it, especially under fire) while the gnolls took potshots at them from the good cover provided by all those weirdly-shaped corridors. I ruled the cultists didn't know about the secret passage, and once the gnolls had taken enough damage they fell back and met the party in force (with the clerics, ghouls, etc) in the clerics' camp room. Chat was hanging around invisible, killed Spugnoir, and got a great opportunity finally to off the party paladin, but he rolled a 1 on his death attack and didn't manage to escape.

Incidentally, my ruling was the clerics can (effectively) control the undead here, and I think that's what was intended: see the text to area 21 of the Moathouse ("this creature [the ghast] obeys all commans from clerics of the EEE... it in turn commands any ghouls found in the dungeon").

Re: Need advice on Moathouse!
well, I nearly killed my party. The only thing that saved them is that Geynor Ton's hate for Yslannsh actually caused in-fighting and that saved 4 of the 6 PC's. Redithidoor is dead now and so are 2 PC's.
One PC I killed has his character killed last week as well and he now thinks of leaving the group :( :(
What I did was way too much for a group of this lvl. Bah, I had hoped it would turn out fun and cool, but it was a major let down, for me personally at least
