It's scrying time!
OK, so now the Fire temple has fallen (mostly - the altar and Tessimon both destroyed) - with Air, that makes two temples. Certain parties have seen and/or met the PCs. So now the scrying begins!

I rubbed my hands together with glee, flipped to the descriptions of Hedrack and Varachan... and see that they have no ranks in the Scry skill whatsoever.

Am I missing something? Or is it just nearly hopeless for these guys to scry a "second hand knowledge" target (DC 15) with their +2 Int bonuses?

Re: It's scrying time!
At DC 15, they'll only need a 13+ won't they. And since you're rolling the dice, well.... :evil .

And really, what's to keep you from just giving them the ranks. Not like the players are gonna know.

I plan on incorporating the splat books in many of the BBEG's in the module, specifically Hedrack. If you do the same (don't your players get to use the splat books?), why not take some creative liberties with his skills? ;)

Crystal Ball?
Doesn't using a Crystal Ball give you automatic success in scrying attempts (within reason)? I forget if it gives you +20 to the check or something along those lines...don't have any books with me now...

Re: Crystal Ball?
All it says with the crystal ball is that it allows you to see people as the spell scrying. I think that means you need to make the usual scry check.

As for redoing the NPCs stats & skills, yeah, that's what I was planning on doing. Greater Spell Focus is available, among other things... I was just wondering if I was missing some "+20 to all scry tries made from the Outer Fane" or something crazy like that.

Nope. It is laughably few who have Scry in the Fanes.

Tarren
Even fewer in the CRM!

Tarren is one though - it's a 4th level druid spell, and doesn't require the huge mirror.

He's scrying on the party now too. Of course, he's met them and has some things that belonged to them (coins!), so it's pretty easy for him to make the check even sans skill.

I think it's possible some arrows or other ammo types of things might be collected and returned to Hedrack. Or will be shortly...

Splat Books
To the question if my players use the splat books, the answer is "mostly not". Most of the things in those books are simply retarded and unbalanced from a design standpoint, so i tend to stay away from them.

/me grumbles about the sword that casts true strike w/ every attack, something the DMG specificly told designers NOT TO DO. >:

I find the game has much more flavor using monte's stuff, anyway. It's clever, refreshing, and, most importantly, ballanced. So it's BOEM 1, 2, 3, and Hallowed Might (LOTS of hallowed might stuff) for my players.

And, of course, as the DM, i try to use the Book of Vile Darkness as much as possible. :evil

Items of True Strike
Bow of True Strike is a spell-completion item, like a wand. You have to have the spell on your spell list to use it, and it takes a standard action to activate it each time. So you only could fire one arrow with +20 bonus every other round. This means that only people who can use it are wizards, sorcerors and bards and rogues who have sufficient ranks on use magic device. It's not nearly as bad as it first seems, but I don't still like it (since it is a unlimited charge item).

Re: Items of True Strike
I know that we are hijacking the topic here, but I'm sure that it will stop soon. The tiefling wizard IMC has a True Strike Bow and, quite honestly, it's not that great. He doesn't use it that much, except when he can prepare for a battle beforehand, or when the battle is pretty much already over. The loss of a round in the middle of a tough combat is hard to justify when you have spells that work better that can be used.
