Rules for the Ballista in Main Gate of the CRM??
Where can I find rules regarding the ballistas?

My group have cleaned house in the main gate and I want to have a suprise waiting for them when they open the doors to the main barracks (area 6)

Thanks in advance!

DMG
Check the DMG, I believe it had some rules about them.

DMG, pg 151, cost 500gp, 3d6/x3, range 120, crew 1. See the text description for more. Personally, I think it should be a touch attack due to the power of the device (punching through armor), but that's just an opinion. I don't think I'll run it that way though.

Re: DMG
The important thing to remember with the Ballista is that you never get to add anything to the D20 attack roll...it's always just a D20 to hit. Thus, if your PCs have 20 ACs, they're nearly impervious to it.

Still, it makes for an interesting scare tactic, especially if the guards see the PCs on a return trip from some distance away, and wheel the thing out the door. Bombardment with ballista bolts, even missing ones, from 1000' away is a bit on the scary side.

Re: DMG
Yeah, I'm not sure why the ballista don't allow the ranged attack roll normally. After all, the crew is only 1. In any case, if the only hit is a critical threat, it will certainly scare the piss out of the players! 9d6 is nothing to sneeze at!

Re: DMG
Someone a long time ago (even I'm getting tired of hearing myself say that...) suggested that ballistae attacks be ranged touch attacks.

You still don't get any advantage from your BAB or Dex like you would with a normal ranged attack, but it has a better chance of hitting.

I'm not sure I like that suggestion, but there it is, straight from the garbage dump of my oversaturated brain.

A more reasonable rule might be to make it an exotic weapon and inflict the standard penalities if the operator doesn't have Exotic Weap Prof (ballista).

-Thrommel, who, as he gets on in years, has turned to the healthier polyunsaturated brains. Low in fat, too. (Depending on the donor.)

Re: DMG
Oops! I looked up Ballista and "War Machines" in the index instead of "Siege Engines." That makes sense.
Thanks for the feedback.

I think I like the ranged touch attack option. My group has just wiped out 90% of the main entrance. I thought for sure I would get them running but a carefully thrown bead of force (from the moathouse) created havoc :(
