Total Party Kill
Do parties really recover from this?

We hit Hedrack a week ago and took 50% casualties and barely escaped. We buffed up, did some scrying and tried again last night. Total party kill. I died both times from disintegrate.

We could have used some better tactics but the save or die stuff really turned the tables in their favor. I will post the gory details some other time but right now we are all pretty bummed. It was close. We killed the assassin, a dragon, Hedrack and some lesser clerics. The vampire dominated our last character standing.

I am the other DM (when I'm not playing) so I may start a new campaign to give everyone a break and build up new characters.

Do players try again or do they just give it up? How do you justify raising the party when nobody made it out? I think we fought a good fight but I've died more in the Outer Fane than I have in the last five years of playing.

Still here? Wow.

Re: Total Party Kill
At least one party I know of made contigency plans that included True Ressurrections.

But yeah, that part of the module is deadly.

Don't know what else to say: My group's set to enter the Fanes within the next 2-3 sessions - it'll be interesting to see how they fare.

Siobharek is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Here for a while

IMC I purposefully set up everyone as agents of the church with a benefactor. I plan to have the benefactor check up on them on occasion and ask questions about their progress.

Thus if there is a TPK, the benfactor can inform his new god squad about everything the previous characters knew.

Still here? Wow.

Re: Total Party Kill
Better precautions are in order.

Death Ward is a must before major fights like this. Having a Sorceror with Disintegrate on his list who actually thinks to try and *counterspell* is also of major benefit. There are means, but the party has to be well prepared and really "on their game".

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"
