Skipping Nulb & The Temple
My party just cleaned out Hommlet (With a great battle in the basement of the flour mill involving 2 beads of force . . .) They then took a trip to Verbobonc (Verbonk-bonk as they call it) and are going to continue on next session. They're turned onto the Rastor angle, and it's connection to the moathouse and the Hommlet cultists. They know about the Hobgoblins at the Temple, but they may forgo that and head straight to Rastor.

Now, I know that plot wise it's not necessary to head to the temple and Nulb, but I'm more concerned with the fact that they will be a level short if they don't deal with it.

Does anyone have an input on whether or not I should push them towards Nulb, etc?

There's always Rastor...
...which has a lot of room to build threats that will easily make up for missing those encounters. You could also bounce the hell out of them in Verbobonc (someone from the cult has been tailing them) or have them run into an ungodly number of random wilderness encounters between waypoints.

I hate using random encounters, since they take so much real role-play time out.

It would only take an encounter or two to get them up to speed in the CRM, as long as they can survive those two . . .

Much like any other encounter, "random" encounters don't need to be strictly combat oriented. In fact, I plan out all encounters, even random ones during traveling, the week before. It's easy enough to change it from 3 ogres to Honjin the Ogre patrol leader and his two sycophants, Jayth and Istun, who are all merely looking for a good time. Let them speak a little bit of broken common and it could be a lot of fun.

In any case, I don't mean to get a soapbox or anything, but I think you should at least encourage them to clear out the temple. You can use Elmo for that, or anyone else in Hommlet. The group stands to gain quite a bit of treasure from it as well, and you can put some useful foreshadowing plot hooks for later (like the Thrommel marker, etc.).

My group went straight through Nulb and past it and then came back through and never even wentto the temple. I had them on a little recovery side quest that added some roleplay aspect to the game. They didn't really even check out the town of Nulb. After that they went back to the city and from there went to the CRM. They have faired fine against everything except Vranthris.
