slippers of spider climbing and attacking
I have a PC that wants to use his slippers of spider climbing to walk on the ceiling and make melee attacks. Is this ok, and if so, what sort of modifiers would this action cause. What about feats, like cleave or whirlwind attack. Do they still work?

mmm, i thought that, in order to use spider climb, a character had to have bare hands and feet. I feel that an exception is possible and that a gloved and booted character can also spider climb

but the idea is that a character uses hands and feet to cling to the ceiling wall... so personally, i dont see a character swinging a weapon AND clinging to the ceiling

same goes for a shield... a spell is highly likely, since it requires the movement of one hand (and a non-erratic movement at that)

so i'd allow spells, but not actual melee or ranged combat... fly will allow him or her to do that, since the character just 'flies' and doesn't need hands or feet to cling to something...

Spider Climb, the spell, requires that you have bare hands and feet. It requires that you use all four limbs when moving, but you can still stay stuck to a wall using only your feet. So you can attack while Spider Climbing, but it's awkward as you have to drop/sheathe your weapon(s) when you want to move.

Slippers of Spider Climb, as written, don't require the use of the hands at all, even when moving. Unless you want to make a house rule, using the Slippers a character can walk along the wall or ceiling with both hands free for attacks.

Re:Slippers of Spider Climbing
That's true for the spell, but this is refering to the wonderous item slippers of spider climbing.

I house-ruled that you always have to have 3 points of contact to stay attached via spider climb effects (including items that mimic it). So you can attack with one hand while on the wall, but can't wield a shield, attack 2-handed, etc.

(These kinds of questions should really be asked on the Rules forum, BTW...)

I can't imagine not having at least a -2 circumstance penalty for this. You are upside-down with blood rushing to your head and fighting with gravity going the opposite way than your muscles are used to normally fighting. On top of that, if you require both feet to be touching the ceiling to prevent falling off (the spell isn't really clear about that), you can't move your feet like you normally would when fighting. You might want to think about not allowing Dodge to work, but not allowing Dex bonus to AC might be going to far.

Just my 2cp, of course...
