The Pit of Despair
This weekend I plan on revising some bad guys with splat book changes. With it, I plan on including at least a partial background with each bad guy that will hopefully explain some of those changes. This should make the characters a little more interesting. I'd be interested in seeing reactions y'all have and especially additional contributions. I'd also be happy to stat up bad guys if someone provides background information. I love stats! :)

Anyway, the point of this post is that I thought of a background for Kellial Unm. Briefly (I'll expound more later), Kellial was captured at an early age by Claaginred and place in the Pit of Despair (the arena). LostSoul could come up with some vile things about it, but I'll otherwise leave you to your imagination. :) It was expected for Kellial to die in the first fight, but he persevered. He become a really good fighter and a fierce competitor. He enjoyed it and reveled in the bloodshed. Eventually, he become a gladiator. In fact, he still comes back to the Pit, willingly, every once in a while. It is his home.

Now, let's say the party encounters him outside the pit. Maybe he'll run away back to the pit, urging the group to follow. He jumps in! However, I was thinking...maybe the pit is located there because it is a magic dead zone? Or maybe a permanent anti-magic shell is placed there? After all, who wants to see magic missiles and stuff like that in an arena fight? I want to see bloodshed, arms hacked off, and guts strewn about the bloodstained dirt!

I like the idea, but how do you propose to keep the other PC's from intervening? I mean they could easily just jump down into the pit to help out their buddy right?

Re: RE: The Pit of Despair
Sure, they can, but no one can just lob spells into the pit or use levitation, etc. to get out. Kellial wants them all in the pit! He'll take them all on! Mano-a-mano!

I like the idea of an arena, but in a magic-heavy world, there must be a way to keep combatants from just teleporting away. This, of course, makes more sense in FR where dead spots are more common, but I like the idea and I don't play in FR. :)

The only problem I have is if the good guys just want to fire missile weapons into the pit. Maybe there are a few boards around the pit where you can hide from the crowd, so as to make a more dramatic entrance. This can double as full cover against missile weapons.

They way I was going to run this idea is to have Kellial or whatever you wish to call your gladiator waiting in the room and when the party comes in or is forced in by the gargoyles he says something like "All right, y've come fer the fight? Let's get 'er started then." Then he jumps down into the pit with the PC's.
