Rage spell: spellcasting? (need quick answer!)
I was just going over notes for tonight's likely encounter with Lareth and realized that after casting rage (Madness domain spell), if it works like Barbarian rage, he wouldn't be able to cast spells. Any thoughts? There is explicit text that you don't suffer the AC penalty or the fatigue, but nothing about being able to do or not do things that require patience and concentration.
Thanks!!!

I'm inclined to say that no, he will not be able to cast spells while Raging, spell or otherwise. Then again, I ran him as a raving, corpse-pummeling lunatic, not a cunning-but-bitter hasbeen priest. Lareth was not a RP showcase for me.

rage and casting
I'd be inclined to let him cast spells that were direct attacks. Blast of force, maybe hold person, flamestrike (if he had it), and the like.
I wouldn't let him cast anything subtle in the least... this includes healing himself. Since my players aren't using the splatbooks, I guess I'd just wing it each time an npc cast rage, depending on the situation and their personality, without needing to come up with hard and fast rules.
-Entropius, whose players may be going to Nulb tomorrow night ... at 5th level. Stay AWAY from Wat, guys.

Re: rage and casting
It's too late for your game, but I ruled that he could still cast while rage was in effect. Besides the spell description not saying otherwise, I just find it unlikely for a spellcaster to cast a spell that makes them unable to cast other spells for a time.

Well, certainly, few sane spellcasters would...
...that is, unless the spell is Tenser's Transformation.
Who ever said Lareth was in possession of all his marbles?

Re: rage
{Well, certainly, few sane spellcasters would...}
Yeah, this was the issue for me too... it is in the madness domain.
{It's too late for your game...}
Unfortunately, it turned out not to be. We got a late start due to long (but fun) pre-game discussion and then they seemed to take forever deciding what exactly to do before leaving town. I threw a pair of Hobs to spy on them on the road (they took the 'low' road closer to the Temple) just to try to urge them that way, but they still went straight on in. We ran out of time after a short combat with a pair of shadows as they were nearing the center of town. Sigh...
Well, the next session will be chock-full, one way or another!
Thanks for the replies!

Re: Rage spell: spellcasting? (need quick answer!)
I was just going through this very dilemma myself. (With the same NPC, no less.) There are good arguments for either side. I say that spells can be cast while raging with the Rage spell. Here's my reasoning:
A Rage spell is basically three spells in one: a slightly stronger Bull's strength, a slightly stronger Endurance, and a much weaker Mental Strength (Oriental Adventures spell that gives a bonus to will saves). These spells are levels 2, 2, and 3, respectively. This would make Rage seem very powerful at first, but look at the duration. The duration on Rage is a mere 1 round/level. The duration on Bull's Strength and Endurance is 1 hour/level and on Mental Strength, 1 round/level. So basically you trade a long duration on Bull's Strength and Endurance for better effects (a constant +4 to Strength and Constitution, as opposed to 1d4+1). And you trade the better effect of Mental Strength for a weaker effect, because you get the bonus to Strength and Constitution.
So basically, if you can't cast spells while under the Rage spell, it's not really worth casting the Rage spell. And I don't think that allowing spellcasting while under Rage unbalances anything, really. Because if you're casting a spell, you're not really making full use of the Rage anyway.
