The water temple gets defensive
IMC the (I think it was a) Trog. thief was pretty much the soul survivor of the slaughter that was the west bridge complex. I've decided he will go and ask for some help from the Water Temple, join em offering information.
My PC's have taken down no temples but the main gate, the green dragon and the western bridge. I've decided to have some fun of my own with scrying(I boosted the wiz/cleric to wiz9/clr3) That spell coupled with some speak with dead has been quite instructive for the Water Temple. They know how formidable a threat the PC's are and are going to start watching them when they can.
If their reconissance goes well they may ask Hedrack for some help.
I may be being a killer DM but I figure they can get this information from a few speak with dead alone:
- many died to lightning bolts, other spells
- their weapons could not effect warrior a
- few could hit warrior a
- warrior a did incredible damage with a rapier
So they will get rid of warrior a asap, boost for the attack, watch and wait very carefully for their coming.

Wiz9/Cle3?
I assume the cleric/wizard you are boosting is Nilbool.
Are you sure your PC's can survive a CR 14 NPC (Nilbool gets 2 from being a kuo-toa, along with the 12 class levels you propose) along with the other people in the water temple?
First round: potion of haste, then improved invisibility
Second round: two empowered fireballs/lightning bolts, avg damage 47 each...
Granted, spellcasters with spread-out levels (some in cleric, some in mage, some in kuo-toa) are less dangerous than pure casters (Hedrack), but I still see this being a very deadly--possibly too deadly--encounter, especially if Nilbool isn't alone.
If you want to give the Water Temple the ability to scry, you might throw in a magical pool that acts as a scrying device.

Re: Wiz9/Cle3?
My PCs haven't really been in serious trouble yet, they started the CRM at avg 7th level and are now 7-9th and they boost up majorly before entering. In fact 2 of them have cohorts just for boosting spells.
my pcs have on them when in them CRMs:
stoneskin *2
bulls str *2
keen edge *2
mage armour
I think you get the picture!
This is a party of 9 including cohorts.
The stoneskin alone drives me crazy.

Re: Wiz9/Cle3?
stoneskin costs 250 gold pieces per casting, how many could they possibly cast???
even on a scroll, the 250 gp extra have to be added to the cost of the normal scroll of the spell's level (4th i think)
so it's very costly to have stoneskin on much of the time...
is your party really rich? do they spend all their money on scrolls or diamond dust worth 250 gp? or did they convienently 'miss' that part of the spell?

Re: Wiz9/Cle3?
just tell them that each casting of the spell will cost them 250 gp.
and not just 250 gp, but diamond dust worth 250 gp per casting... dusted diamond is harder to come by than 250 gp in cash... thay need to find a gem cutter who's willing to grind diamonds to dust... quite unlikely!
so, that'll spell the end of the stoneskins!
enjoy killing them from now on

Re: Wiz9/Cle3?
250gp unless you have a Monte sorcerer. The one in my campaign is threatening to take it (and will level to 8 after next session unless there is a death), and if he does stoneskins will cost him only 10xp.
At the same time I'm not extremely worried because 1) his other fourth level spell is haste, and if he stoneskins a lot of people he won't have any haste use left, and 2) 10 points of damage reduction is great against weenies, but against the real hard hitters like giants, it isn't an amount which cannot be overcome, 3) dispell magic.
"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station |

Q about Stoneskin
Does it cause a visible discoloration of the skin?
That is, can an intelligent beastie say "Ooh, he's protected... let me go wail on someone else?"

Re: Q about Stoneskin
Far as I can tell it does not cause any discolouration. However, I do have monsters of any intelligence hit him once and say "this seems pointless" and proceed to smash someone else. Stoneskin, I would think, would be a widely known spell due to it's power.

Re: Q about Stoneskin
hehe, well well well
anopther player who picks up on a critical flaw of the MC sorcerer
i'm not about to start a rant about the MC sorcerer here, but am i the only dm who might have a problem with a sorcerer casting stoneskin over and over again, costing only 10 xp each time and no material component what so ever?
i didn't have any problem with the MC variant, until my sorc wanted stoneskin
in a campaign where you'll evolve from 4th to as far as 14th level... what is 10 xp per casting?
oh well, i did rant... i apologize!
