Big T things
Hello there, I'm sure this has come up in bits and pieces before, but I'd like to get it consolidated. Every adventure, Dragon article, reference, etc. that you can think of, could you simply post, and where to get it (What issue, what's the module number, etc.).
Post RttToEE I'm going to try to remain on the Tharizdun subject, and I'm going to throw some Chronomancy in there and have Big T try to come back through changing some things the characters did in the past, and then some other past events, and the characters will have to go and fix them, etc.
So I'm just looking for a complete list of all things Tharizdunish
Thanks

Re: Big T things
The earliest, and most pronounced source I am aware of is the old WG4 module "The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun".
If you're after Elder Elemental Eye elements as well, the tie-in there is the original T1-4 "The Temple of Elemental Evil" book module, as well as G3 - Hall of the Fire Giant King and the D1-3 "Vault of the Drow" series of modules. G3 was later complied into G1-3 "Against the Giants", and later still further combined with D1-3 and Q1, "Queen of the Demonweb Pits" into "GDQ - Queen of the Spiders", another book module.

And, if you're really curious, you can try to dig up copies of Gary Gygax's "Gord the Rogue" novels.

Wow, there's a lot of modules there. Are most of those available ESD? Anyone know?
What tie in do ALL of the ones after the original temple of EE have? I've not heard these in connect with T before...

Alright, got another question of nine about Big T. This is largely for my own understanding, but it looks like this backstory could come into play.
Does anyone have a not quite so simplified recounting of the history of Tharizdun? I'm using the site members.bellatlantic.net/...l#theopart as my reference for basically all things Greyhawk, and the history given for Big T is confusing.
"Gord, Gellor and Leda then leave, rest for a while, and release the Minor Avatar of Tharizdun. That avatar in turn releases Tharizdun's true form who, with the aid of Lord Entropy, escapes his prison and conquers Hell and Hades with little resistance. He makes an example out of Bulumuz by consuming him and naming another demon Bulumuz. He rounds up an army to take over the Abyss and rides a three-headed fire drake. In six days he takes Pandemonium. Graz'zt, Elazalag, and the Abat-dolor retreat to Ojukalazogadit. It grows stronger as Tharizdun's hordes are consumed by it. Tharizdun sics Lord Entropy on the living plane.
This reality since Tharizdun's escape has been sealed off from the rest of the multiverse by Chronos and Istus. They recommend that Gord and Company make their stand on Ojukalazogadit. Graz'zt knocks Gord out with a jet from the Eye of Deception. Graz'zt gets a great hit on Tharizdun, but Tharizdun catches Doomscreamer in his bare hand and is unharmed. Tharizdun kills Graz'zt. Gellor and Leda take Gord to the Shadow demi-plane so that he can recover. The skull of the boy Tharizdun fell out when they exited the Abyss and Tharizdun ate it. He sics Mephisto on Gord, Gellor, and Leda in the Shadowrealm. The yeth hounds raze it but can not find them. He nails Mephisto and sends Thrax to Rexfelis's realm. Although Chronos and Istus have sealed off alternate universes, they give Gord and company powers from those alternates. The yeth are now sent on Oerth. Tharizdun and the Yeth come through the bottom of the Sea of Thought. Courflame shatters on Tharizdun. Chronos and Istus yank Gord, Gellor, Leda, and those instrumental in the struggle out of the Oerth Prime and put them on Yarth. Lord Entropy and Tharizdun are trapped on Oerth's burned out Prime."
So what does this mean? I don't see anything about Big T actually ending up being trapped. There's something in there about how Chronos split the timestream, before Big T was released, I'm presuming, and told Gord and Co. to leave well enough alone with that, unless they all want to die. So there's one timestream where Big T destroys everything, and another where Big T is never released, I think. RttToEE, then, takes place in this second timestream. Well what's to prevent this from happening again? Can't Chronos split it again? I don't know how much Greyhawk knowledge the hivemind has, but I'm hoping If any of you have a reference for a different messageboard full of Greyhawk nuts who could set all this history straight for me, that'd be great.
Oh, and yes I realize this is way beyond the scope of what RttToEE is ment to cover, and what most people will probably use, with Tharizdun's history. Orcus and Iuz are getting involved in my campaign, though, and so that throws a wrench into the works.

Big T's background
I'm really not sure what that is... it looks like someone's extrapolated recounting of a battle involving Tharizdun and a bunch of arch-fiends (and others who I don't recognize). I know very little about Greyhawk cosmology; I set my campaign in FR, and a pretty customized version at that.
I also plan to get various outer planar entities involved. Orcus, Cyric (who takes the place of Iuz since I'm playing in FR), Juiblex (who replaces Zuggtmoy), and Lolth, among others. In fact, I have drawn parallels between several of the archfiends and the FR deities. For example, Ghaunadaur = Juiblex, Bane = Asmodeus, etc. If all goes well with the RttToEE, I plan to carry the campaign well past the end of the adventure, ideally into Epic Levels.
As for Big T's background, I take a more Lovecraftian view... He is just one (albeit a very powerful one) of a race of prehistorical, pseudonatural beings simply refered to as the Old Ones. The gods, unable to destroy them, banished them from the multiverse before time began. Fearing what would happen if they ever returned, the gods made it so that such was impossible by the very laws of reality. Tharizdun, after having pondered this for an eternity, has decided that instead of trying to accomplish the impossible, he needs to re-write the rules so that it is possible. Thus, he must make use of the primordial components of existence (i.e. the four elements) to alter the laws of the multiverse.

Re: Big T's background
The content of the "Gord the Rogue" novels are actually outside of the official Greyhawk canon. These novels written by Gygax destroy Oerth, and Chronos has no appearance in any other source other than the novels. The storyline of the novels use Oerth as their setting, but then develop into something totally outside the scope of the RPG sourcebooks for the game, and aren't intended to be official for game-play.

So...
What of Gygax's novel is canonical? It seems like all the non-adventure module info on Tharizdun (aka novels and Dragon mags, the latter being difficult to get) would be pretty unofficial, then, given that most the info given is in a timeline that no longer exists.

Re: So...
None of Gygax' Gord novels are canon, AFAIK. However, the LG entry for Ratik has a certain Evaleigh as ruler. Her story meshes perfectly with the... first or second Gord the Rogue™ book, where he saves her, they fall in love, she has to marry a noble, yadda, yadda.
But that's all, I think. We really need Erik Mona to answer that. He's one of the Greyhawk scholars out there.

Re: The Definition of Canon
This thread now goes religious
Everything Gygax writes is canon if you believe that his is the only valid word on the Greyhawk setting. However, Gygax stopped writing for World of Greyhawk™ when he left TSR, and before that, he altered things to keep information from his players. The Gord novels were by and large published after his departure from TSR (witness the fact that all but 1 (?) were published under his New Infinities imprint.
Because Gygax has 3 versions of Greyhawk to keep track of (the stuff he wrote for TSR, the stuff he wrote for his players, and the stuff he wrote for Gord the Rogue [they might overlap]), I don't necessarily trust his writings for consistency.
With respect to Tharizdun, I suspect that Gord's adventures are badsed on Gygax' campaign - his resolving of the setup that is Tharizdun imprisoned, as it were.
A serious answer to a -question.... I've lost my sense of humour. Sorry

Re: wow
Eltern, TSR originally billed the sequence of events as their first major-super-uber-epic adventure that was supposed to go something like this:
T1-4, A1-4, GDQ
Remember, back in 2E, taking PCs from 1st to 15th was a mammoth undertaking, rather than the simply huge undertaking it is now.
Anyways, the connections were tenuous at best, mostly relating to just trying to market and bill the three as tieable. None of them were ORIGINALLY written to relate to one another.
As for the GDQ sequence itself, that was originally a long sequence. Each G module suggested the next, and the last one (G3, Fire Giant King) is the entrance to the Underdark to pursue the Drow guests of the king (worshipers of the EEE).
To this day, I'm fuzzy how the party gets all fired up about going after these Drow, or about how the "badguy" goes from being EEE-worshiping Drow to good-old-fashoned Lolth followers. The D portion of the sequence is the hardest to follow.
However, when all is said and done, the party finds themselves in Q1, Queen of the Demonweb Pits, making their way through Lolth's layer of the Abyss, finding their way to a "spidership" that would put the hydrolic critter from Wild Wild West to shame, destroy it, and save Oerth once again.
And a darn good thing too...for if they hadn't managed it, it would be used as a precursor to an invasion of the surface by Underdark residents, under the cover of an ever-expanding impenatrable (one-way) bubble of violet darkness that nearly shuts out the sun entirely.

Re: wow
After Temple, one was supposed to play through the Slave Lord series. However, because the restocking rules for ToEE were so ridiculously easy to get wrong, the party I played in was just ripe for going Against the Giants and beyond. IIRC, we were simply called to Sterich (the country with the bubble), because word of our exploits had reached that country, half a continent away.
Go figure...

Re: whoa
Erik Mona is in charge of Living Greyhawk as is - AFAIK - still employed at Wizards of the Coast. He's also a player in Monte's group, but I don't think that'll help you any
I would check out www.canonfire.com - one of the biggest greyhawk sites out there. It has a message board, although it's really very small. While you're there, check out the Oerth Journals. They're really as good as, or better than, some official products.
You could also ask around at www.seankreynolds.com. Sean K. Reynolds wrote some pretty good GH materials and has a Greyhawk section on his boards.
I guess you might also try Wizards' boards, but I've never used them for Greyhawk-knowledge. And ENWorld's boards are bound to have a Greyhawk section as well.
Up front I'd say that you don't have to worry about the Slave Lord series. There wasn't any EEE there (it centered on a hidden city far to the south in the Pomarj where they worshipped something called The Earth Dragon. If you start shoehorning that into EEE mythology, it'll complicate matters, and won't, AFAIK, be related to anything canon).
Against the Giants centers on a plot to have giants run over the westernmost states of the Flanaess. There are some drow there who worship the Elder Elemental God, and they form a link to the Queen of the Demonweb Pits. There, there's a schism between the worshippers of Lloth and the worshippers of the EEE. However, the chief EEE worshipper, Eclavdra, appears in later official products as a priestess of Lloth.
Greyhawk canon is fleeting and depends quite a bit on who you ask. For some reason, it can draw a lot of heat when you ask, "What is canon?".
But good luck, and if you have any specific questions, I certainly think you can ask them here as long as they're RttToEE-related.

So what does this mean? .... I don't know how much Greyhawk knowledge the hivemind has, but I'm hoping If any of you have a reference for a different messageboard full of Greyhawk nuts who could set all this history straight for me, that'd be great.
Your best bet would be to dig through the archives of the Greytalk list, located online at
www.greycitadel.com/greyc...eytalk.nsf
If you dig through my Greyhawk links page (see my .sig below), you'll find many other resources that can help you out. In addition to the Greytalk archives, I would recommend these in particular:
There are also a fair number of Greyhawk fans on ENWorld, and the Necromancer Games forums, FYI.

To this day, I'm fuzzy how the party gets all fired up about going after these Drow, or about how the "badguy" goes from being EEE-worshiping Drow to good-old-fashoned Lolth followers. The D portion of the sequence is the hardest to follow.
There's an excellent article on Canonfire! addressing this particular issue, written by GH fan MerricB. It's at
