Moving past the Black Spike
Ok, so I've been rereading the ending of the module since my PCs are approaching it. They still seem to be operating under the mistaken notion that they are going to get to the end/very bottom of this soon.

How do I drop hints that the nodes are off-site? They have a habit of killing things/asking questions later. I'm serious. They tend to kill things and then ask their dead bodies questions. The thing is, the doomdreamers present are likely to resist this activity pretty well.

So how, without being too obvious, do I let them figure this out? Notes in The First's chambers?

Also, please reassure me that by playing things as written my entire party is not about to be wiped out. I'm worried about them and the altars, to be honest. If they wipe themselves out, fine, but am I missing some obvious tactic they're likely to take up there? I don't even know how they'll get past the main door. THey've surprised me before, and I know they'll do it...I just want predictions on how it will happen.

notes in the first's room are the most obvious way

"progress in the old temple is going as planned... the fire node has been cleared... glorious day..." the works!

as tot he door: if they have a master key, it WILL open, regardless... it might tease them a little, but when someone holding the master key touches it, it has no choice but to open (this wa discussed here a while ago)

But they don't have a master key. They have lesser keys: 3 air, 2 fire, and 1 water. Their greater air key has gotten them along just fine until now, and they never bothered to pick up others.

"3 air" ? there can only be 2, but that might be a typo :D

"3 air, 2 fire" so i take it you mean two air and two fire

that means a greater key of air and a greater key of fire... if they combine them

if they blend the greater air key and the greater fire key, they've got a master key... so they can get in :D

Excuse me. Yes, you're right, and I had forgotten how it was that master keys came into existence.

Haven't they found Hedrack's journal? That, and the fact that the teleport device in the sub-levels of the spike is set to the Old Temple oughta be a clue...
