At what level should the PCs try for the Fanes?
Looking for a simple answer, my group is abnormally large mind you 7-8. I don't want to get trapped in the whole ramping up every encounter trap so I am prepared to encourage them a bit.

Since the highest average CR rating of the CRM is 10 around the fire temple, the general consensus is about level 11 or even 10. But of course a larger party can do it earlier.

"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station

They might miss some of the better spells, but around level 9 should be OK (they're twice as large as a standard group, increasing their average character level by 2. I think...)

...it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
