What does Festrath know about the pool?
I'm wondering how much Festrath knows about the pool he's next to, I.E. the ghast creation feature - and if so, I'm wondering just how totally EVIL it would be if he used the Command "DRINK!" on any attackers...
Any thoughts?

I don't think Festrath knows anything about the pool except that it is likely dangerous. It would be more evil to say "swim" instead, because a PC would probably just take out their waterskin.

If he knew it would ghastify, he might dive into it himself if he knew he was going to die anyway. Such an act fits Festrath, I think, and could be nasty for the PC's.
(I don't think he would know that... however, Tharizdun would, and Festy's mind has been taken over by the half-coherent insane whisperings of Big T...)

but it would be deep enough... he'll have to make a save, and might fail, turning him into a ghast...
and if the command word swim or dive is given to the pc's, they jump in (regardless of its depth) and will be forced to make a save or become a ghast...
it might all be possible...

I would think that he would know about the pool. The cultists have been in this area for _days_ I am sure someone got curious enough to at least touch the pool.

Not necessarily. He doesn't even know about the obex symbol yet otherwise he would have a +1 dagger.

Well, yeah, but there's a slight difference between "oops, I'm thirsty - better get a drink" and saying "Tharizdun" over every square inch of the temple.

well, i still believe it's possible that - because he hears tharizdun's whispers in his mind - he knows about the pool's purpose...
his description clearly states that his mind has been shattered and overcome by spending too much time near the black sun... so maybe Big T imparted some secrets... and Festrath knows about more than you'd expect

This is all meta-gaming, "how evil do you want to go." 
It's buried in my campaign log, but I had him turn into a ghoul IMC (ghast was a touch too much for my PCs at the time) because he was down there alone for so long. So he knew about the water and even tried the 'drink' command on one of the players--who saved unfortunately.
But, even so, they hit him with alchemist fire at one point and he rolled around in the pool to help put it out. That water's pretty refreshing when you have no Con! The two rogues were falling over themselves to run and flank a prone opponent. One of them had to go through the water to get there. Ooops. He made the first save, failed the second.
So you're probably getting some nasty ideas here Here's mine, but this could be a serious PC killer (so I didn't use it). Have a ghoul/ghast Festrath grapple a PC into the pool and hold them there. Ow. Ow. Ow. Dead. Respawn. Reinforcements! Lather, Rinse, Repeat. TPK.
I'm not that evil (well normally), but I know there might be some of you out there that like a serious challenge for your party. There you go. I suppose it might not be too bad of idea if your party comes back to this room much later in the adventure when they are much higher level.

Ooo! Ooo! Great idea!
I'm running this as a PBEM, and I had one guy drop, but haven't written his character out yet. So, here's my plan:
Festrath has Ghastified. I'm not too worried about the ramifications - the party has been able to deal with things much worse before. As soon as Festrath attacks the party, he'll toss a Command at the "dropped" character - which will cause him to jump into the pool. No save.
The party should still prevail, maybe without casualties (I'm running a killer game, and they know it already) but it should be interesting...
