Black Dry-erase boards
Okay, you guys are my last hope!

I had the crazy idea of making a black-with-purple-grid laminated battlemat for my party's forays into the Outer Fane - to try to set the mood a little better.

I hand-drew purple lines on large sheets of black posterboard using a gel pen, and then "borrowed" the laminating machine at the school where my wife teaches to laminate the thing.

However, I'm having a problem finding markers that will show up ono the black surface. I've tsted both dry-erase and wet-erase markers, and dry-erase work better on the laminated surface; wet-erase tend to "bead up" on the laminate.

I have seen at various stores and restaurants black dry-erase message boards, that they use to put up specials, annoncements etc. The colors are almost always fluorescent, but I have not yet been able to find anything like this in stores!

does anybody have any suggestions/knowledge about what to use on a BLACK dry-erase surface?

Brand or product names would be preferred, but any advice is welcome!

Thanks!

Ouch...not sure if I can help you on this or not.

I'm afraid that you've surrendered functionality for the sake of "cool". I don't know of any source for any variety of "flouresent" pen...I've seen something like what you're talking about, but it was bright chalk colors on a dark chalkboard. That's about the only I'm aware of.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Unfortunately, all I've come up with look to be wet-erase. Here's the google search I jumped off of....

Hrm. Yeah, that's what I'd come up with as well, the sanford Brightsticks. They're a little pricey at $20 for the set, but I may just go ahead and get 'em. If they work, it'll be perfect. If not, well, my wife's a teacher who uses the overhead a lot . . .

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried white grease pencils? Test first to make sure it comes off. I suspect if you push hard with an old Tshirt you should be able to wipe it off. You can also get grease pencils in yellow, and maybe red.

Another Option
I have a friend who uses photoshop to create full maps that can be printed out with a oversize plotter. He created the Fire Bridge Complex in the CRM for me:

pages.infinit.net/fox/Pic...ridge1.jpg

And right now he's working on levels 1-5 of the Nightfang Spire for me. For a modest fee (never really determined, 5-10$ per map prolly) he'll make maps for you. all he needs is a good scan of the image emailed to him.

I can email the fire bridge complex map to anybody who's interested. I tried to put it in the file dump but i coudln't connect. :(

Tenacious B:

Grease Pencils - where do I get them? Art Supply Stores?

I did a little more experimenting, and I thik the Wet-erase will work okay; the "beading" that goes on is not too bad, and if those BrightSticks markers have large tips, they should leave a large enough line to get the point across.

Now, to find these Grease Pencils . . .

SUCCESS!

Thank you, Tenacious B!

I just picked up a couple of white grease pencils, and they work fabulously.

Red paper-wrapped 'China Markers" also work well.

I love this board!

If you have good quality large scans of the CRM, I'd love to see them. I've actually been trying to put tiles together for my game, but my scans look REALLY crappy once blown up to the appropriate 1" scale. If you have readable scans, I'd love to see them.

Re: Another Option
If that doesn't work you can go to a fabric store and get some clear vinyl, and put it over your board. Vis-a-Vis wet erase markers work well on the vinyl.

Another option is to goto Lowes or Home Depot and get some clear Lucite or plexiglass. Get a very fine permanent marker and on the opposite side of the plexiglass draw one inch squares. Now you can put this over top any color posterboard to 'set the mood'. I got the 8"x10" pieces so that I can do running battles and can store it in my game box. Oh yeah, the Vis-a-Vis markers also work well on the plexiglass.
