I think my group is too low level for the Fanes!
I have a sticky situation here.

My group is large, with seven players. Right now they are 7th-5th level. They managed to pull off a major victory last game with some clever role-playing. Here's what happened.

First, the earth temple has already been destroyed. They want to get to the Earth bridge to get across, as they have the earth key. They took the air bridge and got some symbols. They have a rough map gained by interrogating prisoners, and started around the CRM. As they approached the Water temple, they dressed like CRM folks and demanded safe passage.

I thought this was a good time to introduce the raid, so the priestess told them she would grant them passage, if and only if they agreed to help in the attack against the fire temple. They could continue on the other side.

Well, they were more treacherous than the cultists. The group's super-fast fighter/psychic warrior took a boat to area 134 and ran through the CRM to the Fire temple. I had placed D'Gran here rather than at the bridge, because I said it misremembering where he was, complete with description. So its like alright, D'Gran's at the fire temple now.

Anyway, he goes before D'Gran and tells him of the Water temple's plan. He gets thrown in the pits with the mephits guarding him. He bribes them and heads back to the group after finding an exit to the STalagos.

Now, the expedition heads out, only to be met with the full force of the fire temple. D'Gran, tessimon, Zert, The salamander blackguard, etc. The PCs hold back a bit and let the temple forces pound on each other. The water is quickly overwhelmed. They placed a Wall of Force over the altar, so the scroll of disintegrate would be wasted. Then the PCs defeated the fire temple's forces.

After clearing this area and taking care of whatever guards were left behind, they got back in their boat and headed to the Water temple. There they wiped out the remaining leadership and sent the mooks running.

So, three out of the four temples have been defeated! The levels actually are 3x7th, 2x6th, and 2x5th. I'm thinking I need to encourage them to pull out and go to Verbobonc, then fortify with what is left and make them go through that before reaching the fanes.

What does the hivemind think? Is this the best course, or with this many players can they take it?

I don't know if it helps now, but I'd really recommend giving serious RP/non-violence XP for this kind of play, if you aren't already. This way, even as the forces are depleted in the CRM, your party still keeps pace. Getting two whole temples to start an all-out war on one another is huge. If you want to keep it in line with what they would have done had they done the deed themselves, add up all the things that were killed by the temple clash and give them a healthy fraction of that.

I think you're right about your party's level. Although they are large, their individual saves (especially), HP, and spell selection is not what they are probably going to need to survive. If you can't pump them up (realistically) with RP XP, you might have to do something like what you're suggesting. Or, start the Hedrack scry sequence and send some baddies after them to start sending messages about what's coming up :)

Id tally up the total XP they would have gained from all the forces that were defeated but they didn't actually fight, and award them 50-75% of the total.

Ditto what's been said already (grant a huge XP bonus, likely a full level to most, if not all of them), plus you might want to drag out the RttToEE Web Enhancement and try to send them down that, through to clean up other creatures in the outer ring, and toss Hedrack's three assault squads at them (one at a time, of course).

I would not press them to fly off to Verbobonc and restock while they were out. Let them make up their own mind.

Ultimately, if they were resourcefull enough to get this far, and they've taken down your other obstacles along the way, then let 'em have their go at the Outer Fane. They'll either surprise you and do well, or they'll suffer greatly, retreat, regroup, and go from there. TPKs are hard to get on large parties like this.

I'm curious as to the existing level spread, though...what are your "return after dead" rules? If they're over-harsh, that may well be another reason they're falling behind and in serious trouble.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

Well, I did give them enough story XP to level everyone who was involved. We had 3 6th and 2 fifth at the time, and they all leveled. The other two fifth levels missed that game. For the guy who ran solo through parts of the mines an extra thousand.

Return after dead - either you make a new character at the lowest level of the spread, or you get raised. Only had one guy get raised so far, the rest of the fatalities just introduced replacement characters.

They do desperately need to refit, they've been grumbling about it for awhile now. The only +2 weapons are the swords of Fire, Earth, and Water. They are determined to find the other one I believe. I think I'll send a message from (brain fart can't remember his name) the priest in the Fanes that Hederack has everything in the Fanes at full alert, best wait for things to calm down a bit. Knowing them, they'll push ahead anyway.

They can be a rather resourceful group :) . If so, then I may need to crack some skulls inside the fanes just to get the point across. Another thing that helped was that they managed to skip a large part of the mines by taking boats from the water temple to area 134.

Oh, and as an added bonus one of them just took the Demonstone :) .
