BoVD, Sacrifices
I have an idea I wanted to bounce off the hivemind, regarding the BoVD rules for sacrifices. I am planning on using this for the Greater Temple in the recovered Temple. Asuming the Second can make the skill check in the high 30's, I was considering giving all the DD's present the Pseudonatural template for 10 minutes per Hit Dice of the victim.

Do you think this gives just the right amount of creepy effect or is it too powerful?

Seems like a cool idea to me...you'll need good descriptives for it, though.

Let's read the template then. Let's see:

True Strike 1/day. Not a party killer by any means.
Alternate Form: -1 penalty to attacks against them...that's...about half a Bane.

Elec/Acid Resistance: So they're out Elec spells. Who uses Acid spells regularly anyways? No biggie, and easily reproduced with a Resistance/Protection spell.

Damage Reduction: Non-issue. By now, if the PCs don't have +3 weapons anyways, they're doomed once they reach Imix.

SR: 2x HD, up to 25. This is the sole "major" benefit, and even IT is reproducable with the Spell Resistance spell, which will almost guaranteed grant equal or better (minimum caster level 9 grants SR 21. Assuming CL = HD, L10=22 vs 20, L11=23 vs 22, L12 = 24 vs 24, and L13 = 25 vs 25. Yes, there is a small window where you could get a better SR from the template than the spell if you had non-CL HD...but it's a minor difference.

Now, the suggestion was "give all the DD present in the Greater Temple", right? So that's...

Susain Carun (Rog 2/Clr 8/DD 3)
The Second (Aboleth Clr 7/DD 1)

Even expanded to the entire level, that would only add:

Estalion (Sor 6/Cle 6/DD 1)
Thuchos Nalred (Clr 9/DD 3)

One ritual to grant, for the grand majority of the benefits, Protection from Lightning and Spell Resistance on two, perhaps even four, NPCs. That doesn't seem like a TPK in the making to me.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

...what Andorax said...though I would make that Knowledge-Religion roll first, then figure what the benefits were. A low roll equals 'squib' right?

...and if you use the Grell-Second - it/s/he already has Electricity Immunity so there goes one benefit :)

I think the sacrifice rules, (though they can be OTT) add a fittingly vile flavour to both the cult and to just such occasions (storming the major temple of a Deeply Dark God)
and though I haven't used them yet (I've been tempted) I will for the Greater Temple - it's crying out for it.

Will you (also?) give the PCs the chance to interrupt the sacrifice-in-progress, a la Greater Temple description?

And heap on the descriptions!

Re: BoVD, Sacrifices
Thanks for the input.

I am a little worried that other escaping DD's from the area may retreat to the main temple by using Word of Recall. This would benifit the cult drastically when combined with adding template to all of them. After taking a closer look at the sacrifice table in BoVD, I may tone this down a bit by increasing the required roll. It would require a roll of 45 to effect all the DD's, 40 to effect 3 of them and a 35 for the Second to be effected. Something like that. It would require a roll of about 17 or more on the d20 to get all of them!

There will definitely be the opportunity for the party to interupt this. Maybe even a quikening the pace of the drums so they have warning. The party might think this is the actual calling of big T so it should put the fear of Pelor into them.

I see this as the final chance for the party to see just how twisted the cult is. Any sugestions for gory descriptions would be appreciated.

Rather than making lot of family-unfriendly suggestions of sick goriness on a family-friendly board, I'd suggest the relevant thread in the Best of the Boards for gruesome inspiration.
