3 temples down - what do I throw at them next?
>> Quick overview
Group destroyed Earth, Air then teamed up with Water to destroy Fire. Now working their way through the Fire guards to get to the Water temple. Getting cocky :)

>> Questions
1. When does Hedrack start scrying on the party? Does he send out his assasins now?
2. When/how does Varachan (the defector priest, I forget if that's his name) help? Just some ideas or examples from your games would be helpful.

That's it for now, the players have been commenting on how the module seems to be only hack and slash with little or no story, even though they've been given (to me) plenty of hints as to the whole "destruction of the world" thing! haha

Anyway, any help as always will be appreciated.

"the players have been commenting on how the module seems to be only hack and slash with little or no story"
funny, the exact words of my party's paladin... little does he know... poor fool

as to the scrying, that should have commenced with the fall of the second temple...

the assassins, dito, as soon as hedrack confirms outside assailants...

it's not too late though... first, send victor after them... he's a "warning" to them... if he fails, send more... that's how it's supposed to be (and has been proposed on this forum)

make sure not to "overkill" them too soon, first victor alone, then more appropriate action ;)

And just to remind, it's never the "assassins". Hedrack sends ONE assassin, and always holds the other "in reserve".

The order of attacks (I'd recommend one per night for 3 nights) is:

Victor (or Bethe, personal preference).

Ukemil and the Lions (Myself, I'd prefer a redone Pseudonatural version to the Fiendish ones in the book)

The two Invisible Stalkers.

If the 'stalkers don't dissuade them, circle the wagons, reinforce the Outer Fane, and wait.

This is the official, by the book, response result, and it was to commense when the second temple fell (and Hedrack "found out" about it).

Okay, I messed up, I admit that :) but I couldn't find where in the book the 'schedule' for Hedrack. dangit, I *knew* that was in there.

Alright, well, not all is lost. Here are the details of the recent temple defeats:

After returning to the CRM from Rastor, the group takes out the Air temple, and in the same day finds the kua-toa cleric at the docks, who takes them to the Water temple where they make a deal to destroy the Fire temple. The attack on the Fire temple commences that same day and they rest that night. If memory serves me right (I'll have to check my notes), the Air and Fire temple attacks take place in the same day, and afterwards they rested, paranoid, in the rooms south of the Fire temple. It's been about a day and a half since then, and the bridge guards have organized and attacked (at night) the group, taking the nearly 100 HP fighter to just 3 points (with the grey render) and other PCs to low points also, which is where we ended the last session.

They also hear another group of fighters coming up the hall, and they are planning to run away at this point. After this fight completes, should I have an assasin attack while they are trying to run away or rest? They were already trying to rest to get healing and attack spells, but this latest attack interrupted the human cleric's sleep, so they have no healing spells. I know I hadn't been planning it but since it's part of the timetable for Hedrack anyway it's not like I'm really trying to maliciously kill the party. Does that make sense? :)

And thanks for the attack timetable Andorax, the group has spent the last several nights in-game inside the CRM and I've been wanting to dissuade them from that :)

Any more suggestions? what about Varachan?

Everything seems to have happened so quickly it isn't really problematic. Hedrack didn't even have a day to respond to the Air temple before Fire went down as well, but the quick defeat of two temples should surely get his attention.

I would only backtrack to say that Hedrack was scrying on them watching them fight the bridge guards rather than having the assassin pop up during the fight. Then he can supply the assassin he sends out with info on the group, who the assassin should target, etc. Probably that night or the next night (depending on if it is obvious where the party camps, if not, maybe one more day while Hedrack tries to scry out their position).

It will probably be touch and go whether Varachan can actually warn them before the attempt. Probably not as he doesn't know where they will go.

Once you reach this point you need to keep in mind when Hedrack is scrying and what he learns, and when Varachan is scrying and what he learns. Then how are they both going to use this knowledge. Of course you can always shift things around for dramatic effect.

They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station

Ditto on the above comments, but I thought I should point something more important out (to your PC's).

"...but this latest attack interrupted the human cleric's sleep, so they have no healing spells."

Maybe this is a houserule of yours, but by the RAW, a cleric does not need to sleep to regain spells. They only need to pray for an hour at the appropriate time. Otherwise, clerics that regain spells at midnight (as has been proposed on these boards for the bad guys) would need to sleep all day. I'd suggest let the PC's regain their clerical spells.

Thanks for the tips guys, I didn't think it would be "cheating" to have to backtrack a little. Good tips Cordo, thanks! :)

And about the cleric sleeping, I know one of the spellcasters didn't recover his spells, it may have been the elf sorcerer who had his meditation interrupted, I'll have to check - it's been 2 months since we played! ;)

But thanks again guys!

Re: .
IMC, Varachan heard about the PCs a little before Hedrack did (I assume that, as a trusted associate with a Crystal Ball, Hedrack has Varachan do all the mundane scrying duties, and relies on him for information). He send them a "sack of goodies" after the second temple went down, consisting of four potions each of CMW and Nondetection, and one of Neutralize Poison, along with a note.

I don't recall the exact contents (it's on another machine), but it basically amounted to "get your rears into the central isle as soon as you can manage it" and was signed "He who has seen too much".

He managed to meet with the PCs while Hedrack was busy setting an ambush up on the outside (see my campaign thread for more info). His information, plus Hedrack's Journal (looted from his quarters earlier when they caught him by surprise) have them off to the Recovered Temple, while Varachan tries desperately to cover their tracks.

That's a good idea to introduce into my game - Varachan reports the status of the CRM to Hedrack, which ties into the bridge guard attack (IMC the guards organized on their own with the various NPCs to set guards and attack in waves). He can leave a care package with a hastily written note, etc., etc.

Thanks again!

Re: .
Okay, after rereading the suggestions, here is what I'm going to plan out.

Varachan reports to Hedrack any major disruptions in the CRM using his crystal ball. He's tried to delay reporting the fall of 2 temples in quick succession but since it's been over a day Hedrack has found himself out and Varachan couldn't prevent that.

Watching this latest fight with the bridge guards, Hedrack sends an assasin that night to attack the weakest members of the group, while Varachan scrambles to provide a care package (with short note) for the group once he learns of the assasin's plans. I'm going to try to place the package in an area that should be obvious to the group that is hard to get to.

Game-wise, does Varachan deliver the package in person (considering he doesn't want anyone to know he's trying to assist the group) or does he have a trusted henchman do it?

Re: .
The first time, I had him boss around a SER (Spider Eater Rider), who was told to "just do it, and don't ask questions". The package was left in the Earth Temple, which the PCs had just destroyed and were about to come back through.

The second time, he burned a (not listed in his equipment) scroll (I'm still allowing him to use Clerical items) to do a Summon Monster V, summon up a Quasit, and have it deliver a second note. The note came with instructions..."Kill the bearer of this note, it would go ill if the creature could report back", which the PCs did.

Thanks Andorax, good suggestions as usual. See what happens when I don't play in forever?
