very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
ok, so lat's presume someone gets into the temple, and is polymorphed into a dwarf...

has this happened to anyone?

what does the polymorph include?
- darkvision 60 feet?
- +2 to constitution, -2 to charisma?
- resistance to spells / poisons?

i know it doesn't include the +4 AC against giants or the bonus to stonecunning (that's part of the memory hidden inside the amulet-necklace)

so what would a character gain? my session starts in five hours, so quick repkies would be appreciated...

Re: very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
This from the SRD:
Quote:
The polymorphed creature acquires the physical and natural abilities of the creature it has been polymorphed into while retaining its own mind. Physical abilities include natural size and Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores. Natural abilities include armor, natural weapons, and similar gross physical qualities. A body with extra limbs does not allow a character to make more attacks (or more advantageous two-weapon attacks) than normal. Natural abilities also include mundane movement capabilities, but not magical flight and other magical forms of travel. Extremely high speeds for certain creatures are the result of magical ability, so they are not granted by this spell. Other nonmagical abilities (such as low-light vision) are considered natural abilities and are retained.

So darkvision's definitely in. About stat adjustments, I'd say no. It says later on in the spell description that Int, Wis, and Cha are unaffected. And it's too much of a bonus if the character gains +2 Con, but not the -2 Cha. But YMMV.

The saving throw bonuses are definitely there. They are not something learned and it's certainly non-magical bonuses, so I'd keep those.

Actually, based on the latest Polymorph errata, the dwarf DOES get the bonus to constitution.

But there's a catch: someone polymorphed retains their old HP. So it helps with Fortitude saving throws and nothing else.

Re: very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
so i might just stick with the older rules regarding polymorph, since the increased con wouldn't give more hitpoints... i'm not gonna mess with their stats.

just the darkvision and the minor bonusses vs spells and poisons... and the aspect of roleplaying a dwarf from now on (if he touches the necklace) or of roleplaying a human mind trapped inside a dwarven body... this should be good :evil

Re: very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
We had a long conversation on this before and I don't believe we came to a solid consensus. An opposing view (e.g. mine) is that the newly polymorphed dwarf gets the normal physical attributes of a dwarf (Str 10, Dex 10, Con 10+2=12), and does not retain those he had has a human, or an elf. This will usually hurt, but may help in the case where he is a halfling with a Str 6 or something.

Infiniti2K, you're right, if you use the spell as written: Str, Dex, and Con do change to fit the new body.

But let's face it: Who would get zicced? In all probability the party rogue. And personally, I don't have the heart to rip 7 points of dex from my rogue (yeah, I know I'm a softy).

But by the rules, I think you're right.

Re: very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
Ok, so here is the condensed rules for Polymorph:
1) You get no Ex or Su abilities of said creature

2) You get the natural abilities of said creature (some Ex abilities could be considered 'natural' by some DMs), so you get that 15 ft movement for the Dwarf.

3) Your Str, Dex, and Con change to _average_ values for that race. So that would be Str 11, Dex 10, Con 13 for a Dwarf. Oh yeah, the Con change does _not_ affect HP, but it does affect saves. Int, Wis, and Cha remain unchanged.

So this will most likely be a _bad_ thing for your average PC, could be a boon for a Wizard or Sorcerer

Well, it's no worse than a permanent drain to an ability (ala Wat's horrific appearance). They only need to purchase a polymorph other in Verbobonc to change back, if no one in the party can do it.

Re: very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
Actually, by the letter of the rules, polymorphing the character back actually changes the physical attributes to the average of that race. Luckily, it has got a duration of permanent, so it can be simply dispelled or removed with a break enchantment spell.

Re: very quick question: polymorph into dwarf!
Good point about the break enchantment. Y'Dey can cast that. As for the other point, I remember a similar discussion on the Rules or Magic board. Since it says "...even into itself" I think a prevailing opinion was that a second polymorph other effectively negates the first one, similar to a haste negating a slow, and seemed to be in line with the power level of a 4th level spell. Instead of thinking about a human-to-dwarf change, consider a human-to-eel change. Does the reversal (using a polymorph other) restore the original stats? I'd said so, but I admit the rules are not clear.
