An interesting picture
First, the Book of Vile Darkness brings us the Demonstone and Liquid Pain, both refugees from RttToEE.
Now, Races of Faerun's art gallery is posted, and in it one finds an interesting picture, under the heading of "Hammersphere" (straight from the WotC website)

Re
Not to sound sassy, but what are you getting at? It's an interesting drawing and all, but...
Just curious...

It's the Hammersphere. It's in the Crater Ridge Mines.

Re: Re
I'm pointing out that several things that made their first appearance in Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil are now finding their way into other WotC published books.
Manual of the Planes has the Half-Elemental templates.
The Book of Vile Darkness has the Demonstone, Liquid Pain, and doubtless half a dozen other things I forget for the moment.
Now the Races of Faerun book appears to have Hammerspheres in it (re-read the Dwarven Shrine in the CRM, you'll find a well-guarded room with half a dozen of 'em).
Not a complaint, just an observation. It *is* kind of cool to have a picture to show the PCs, but kind of lame that they'll know what they do already if they have that book.

Hammerspheres
The funny thing is that I just picked up RoF, and saw the picture of the Hammerspheres, but couldn't find one single mention of them in the book... Anyone else found mention of them?

Changing up the hammerspheres
I wound up changing the look of the hammerspheres. I knew that my players would see these shiny silver balls and not go anywhere near them (as they just scream "TRAP!!!") Instead, I made them look like finely crafted silver weapons (dagger, hammer, shortsword, etc). I changed that room to have been the scene on a big battle (where cultists fought dwarves in the first invasion). I placed the weapons near the bodies of some of the cultists' mooks (as they had come in, tried to use these shiny magic weapons--and been dominated into turning against their masters). One of the PC's snatched the dagger, and wound up having a fairly short battle against his friends.
Ultimately, the hammerspheres have become a very important plot element. The druid in the party started off as an outcast dwarf--but died, and was reincarnated as an elven woman. She died again, and was reincarnated as a Troglodyte (I don't run reincarnate as written). Last session, he was able to finally regain his original form via the hammerspheres' magic (I'm not running their Polymorph effect normally either...I let him regain his actual original form, instead of just being Pmorphed into a generic dwarf). Unfortunately, he also failed the save vs. Domination, so he's desperate to get back to the mines to continue the "cleansing".
