Hedracks Response
Situation:

Earth temple and Water temple destroyed. Tessimon has just been killed, and my Earth Elemental has just repelled an attack of the intruders at the earth door.

I have lost one of my assassins to a bungled attempt, as well as the troglodyte and his pet dire lions (cant remember his name).

A retriever planar ally has also failed to "retrieve" temple keys,

The party has now retreated back to the mines...

What do i do now ?

Time to unleash Thrommel ? (oh please !) or the air elementals ? Keep them to maintain the strength of the outer fane ? My minions have a tough time locating the party when the flee (basically they keep going up a ropetrick which is very difficult to find).

Re: Hedracks Response
Final step would be to send the two Invisible Stalkers. They can Track the party back to where their rope trick is, return, report to Hedrack, and he can then send someone (perhaps Naquient) with them who can cast Dispel Magic.

If that doesn't do the trick, if the Stalkers fail to track the party, then pull it all in and defend.

I've assigned "midnight" as the prayer time for followers of Big T, so it should go something like this:

Nightfall: Hedrack sends the Stalkers forth.

10:00 PM or so: Stalkers find the end of the trail.

11:00 PM: Stalkers return and report. Hedrack tells Naquient to prepare for an attack, and to have Dispels at hand.

12:00: Naquient begins her prayers.

1:00: Naquient is ready to go. Stalkers lead her to the party.

1:30: Fire up those Dispel Magics. If two fail, Naquient curses and stalks back to the OF, ordering the Stalkers to remain there and await, attacking whomever comes down first.

Thus, the PCs will either have a rude awakening in the middle of the night (complete with a d6 damage from a 15' fall) and three foes to face, or else they'll be rested, refreshed, and the first one down the rope will be pummeled mercilessly.

Re: Hedracks Response
Once again, excellent plan, Hedrack, er, I mean, Andorax! :)

Just a little comment, probably because you do not have the book handy, Naquent has a wand of dispel magic with 20 charges, so she will most likely succeed at dispelling the rope trick. I suggest she 'buff' up the stalkers (endurance, cat's grace, silence, magic vestment, shield of faith, etc.) and hang back in a support roll, possible using all summon monster spells (one summon monster V from a scroll). If she becomes targeted, she should flee, possibly with the ethereal jaunt.

"...Naquent curses and stalks back..." No pun intended? ;)

Re: Hedracks Response
An excellent suggestion in turn, Infiniti2000. Keep her in the buffing/support role (and remember, she can remem whatever she likes beforehand, so SM IV and Vs should be no problem). You are correct in that I didn't look her up before my post, and thus did not realize she had a Wand of Dispel Magic on her.

I don't think she can cast Magic Vestment on them, though, as they do not posess clothes/armor/shields to enchant. Still, Bull's Strength, Endurance, Cat's Grace, Shield of Faith and (of course) Silence will make them a deadly duo indeed. After a couple of summonings, a Prayer or Recitation* might also be in order.

I definately agree as well that all efforts should be taken to have Naquient get away from the fight. Personally, relying on being able to cast Etherial Jaunt isn't necesarialy the best strategy...you might consider adding a Refuge stick to her inventory, placed there by Hedrack himself.

Re: Hedracks Response
One fun thing Hedrack can do, too, is use Imbue Spell Ability to give one of the stalkers or assassins a few extra tricks... Unfortunately you can't imbue a 3rd level spell, so Dispel Magic is out. But Sanctuary could help an assassin make his/her getaway after striking, and an extra Cure Moderate Wounds never hurts!

Re: Hedracks Response
Just remember that Imbue with Spell Ability has some fairly severe restrictions on what can be imbued. I don't recall exactly, but I *think* it is only Abjurations and Conjuration(healing) spells.

Really annoyed my players when I told them Lyssa could not use ISA to give Fredrick a Silence spell.

Re: Hedracks Response
How does Hedrack come to the conclusion that they are in a rope trick as opposed to have T-ported out, or used Ddoor, Fly or even Pass w/out Trace to screw up trackers?

Now if the Stalkers see the PCs go up a rope trick that's another story.

Re: Hedracks Response
A valid point, and one I hadn't considered. I forget these things sometimes.

One possible clue would be if they were successfully scried...the "inside" of a Rope Trick, at least to my mind, has a relatively distinct appearance to it.

Another might be a Divination, or even a Commune, to narrow down that very list of possabilities.

The final straw, however, would be if Naquient followed the Stalkers to where they "lost the scent" and did a Detect Magic. She wouldn't know what to expect until after it was cast (and thus wouldn't be as prepared), but I would think that she'd figure out what was up from there readily enough.

Re: Hedracks Response
That would probably fairer, and would provide a less buffed out encounter and should lead to teaching the PCs to take greater caution.
