Which way in the CRM?
I'm working on prep for my Monday excursion to the CRM. I was curious about which direction YOUR group headed when they entered.

I'm assuming everyone cam in via the main gate, since most groups wouldn't survive the South gate at this point.

So, did they head south to the tracks, or north into the Earth Temple first? I've been working my way southward in my prep, and I was hoping I'd have all the encounter stuff together by Monday, but I don't think I will.

My gang went north because the entrance was restocked by the Earth Temple.

My party made a short excursion down South and took on Vranthis. This "venture" dragged out a bit when Vranthis kidnapped the party rogue. After this they followed their original plan and headed North knowing that the Earth Temple was awaiting...

Re: Which way in the CRM?
My party didn't get past the main gate the first time they went in. After getting all the loot from the soldiers there, they headed back to Verbobonc to make some cash (Diablo players, what can I say). The second and subsequent times, though, they went south. The first game session they got as far as Vranthis before we finished for the night. If you only do the encounters up to him (including the ettin and rust monster) you should be all right. If you haven't prepped the Earth Temple, and the party decides to go that way, throw in a Xorn guardian near the entrance to scare them away.

In that respect, I make a point out of asking my crew which way they're heading next. Otherwise it's too big a hassle.

Re: Which way in the CRM?
my crew took the south entrance first... cleared the air temple... stumbled upon the fire bridge... feared it was the fire temple and withdrew... went the other way... learned that this time, they were really headed for the fire temple...

left...

took on the main entrance... went towards the trog caverns and the earth temple... didn't push on... withdrew... went the other way... found the ore carts... didn't feel like indiana jones...

backtracked... took on earth temple head on...

pusged on... found another bridge... clearing that out right now...

complicated to host a session for 'em but i've got the entire mines written out... so no matter where they go, i've got the whole thing prepped...

i'm gonna prepare the fanes in a few days...

i usually have time enough to prep... casualties have been steadily increasing among the party members... so more trips for a resurrection in town...

it is feeling like a simple dungeon bash right now, little cohesion...

bash, kill, die, withdraw, resurrect, re-enter, bash, kill, die, withdraw...

time i pulled them into the fanes... :evil

Re: Which way in the CRM?
My group entered through the main gate and then went north chasing the trog cleric. They killed a bunch of trogladytes and then turned around and went south. They entered Vrantris' area and got ambushed and the party was almost completely slaughtered. So the remaining two who escaped and went back to the city to find some more adventurers and sell items.

The second time in they decided to enter the south gate. They took the south gate and air temple and managed to go down as far south as the dwarven forge before they decided to turn around and go back to the city to sell the items they found.

The third excursion they went in the main entrance again on a mission basically to kill Vrantris. they go down there and manage to kill Vranthri and the Ettin. After that they go back to the city again.

The fifth time in they go in the main gate and go north and destroy the earth temple. After a night camping just outside the main gate they go south again and take on the fire bridge complex and manage to kill everyone except D'Gran. D'Gran escaped and is now currently at the fire temple. After that they go back to the city.

Recently on there sixth time in they go in through the main gate and go north. They made it through the dire apes and found that the northern bridge complex was almost completely empty (Because Omartharis has taken his group to the south gate to guard it.) One or two almost get killed by the hag in area 190, and then they rest and when they wake they are attacked by Vister and Chatrilon. The two assassins almost kill the wizard. In the end though they both went down.

Re: Which way in the CRM?
Thanks, guys. That's what I was afraid of. What was Monte thinking, designing a circular dungeon in which there is very little way to determine what you players will do next? >: :D

My table stats for encounters has progressed down to the water temple (I'm now on page 63 of the stats!), but I play on Monday and there is no way that I'm going to be able to get the remaining 16 pages of CRM entered in before then. Not to mention that I need to get back and make sure I'm well versed on tactics, response trees, spells, special attacks, and so on. I'm a little stressed right now, since I want the CRM to grab this group of seasoned players and actually put some fear into them, in preparation for the Fanes . . .

I hope they go south. Looking at the main gate, they are kind of herded that way by the fact that there are more doors and explorable areas heading south. I'm hoping I know my group well enough to assume they'll continue that way.

Apparently my guys where unique
My players tried the main gate and were quickly pushed back. At that point they decided to explorer ALL of their options, including climbing in. They ended up scouting the entire inner rim of the CRM, listening at each bridge door (invisible rogue/wiz with cloack of the arachnid).

Once they picked a door, they made enough scrolls to spider climb everyone and climb over the rim, down to the lake and enter at the air bridge. They cleared the area and headed south, clearing as they went. Earth temple, main gate, Vranthis, and the umber hulks fell in order. Then they met D'Gran and decided to go north.

Maybe I made it too easy to get in that way...

Monster tables
Benhamtroll, you might look on the yahoo group. I posted a pair of MSW docs that are basically statblocks like you'll find in the back of the module that cover all the NPCs and all the monsters found in the CRM.

Re: Monster tables
Our group went to the Earth temple until they hit the Water temple. Had one player Death...got the character rezzed and then went back through the earth temple to the main gate. From the main gate they then decided to go the opposite direction through the mines section.

You should prepare both directions about a session ahead of the characters. You know how far your party will be able to adventure each session. Our sessions were 4-5 hours each time and it took at a minimum 4 sessions per temple. At once per week this took our group a year and a half to play through the adventure.
The party never were able to get out of the CRM once they entered. Verbobonc was 3 days away and too far what with the urgency factor that is built into the module. I also had one of the players be a DoomDreamer and he was somewhat pushing the characters to go on and not stop.
The adventure is very well thought out ....Thanks again Monte this thing rocks the second group will have a fun time as well.

Re: Which way in the CRM?
My group assaulted the main gate, explored briefly in both directions, then decided to press north. According to their "threat assessment", the mines shafts to the south were likely a distraction, and the "serious" threats were likely to the north. At that time, they hadn't considered the possibility that the entire crater ridge had been mined.

Unfortunately, the module is written the other way around. [sigh]

Re: Which way in the CRM?
My group used sound logic, they figured the back door would be more well guarded and they'd go through the front door. However, they also assumed that the more used entrance was the main gate, so they followed the more used trail to the south entrance, and didn't bother to go looking for the other entrance.

I had prepared the main entrance, so I had to switch them around or I'd have been screwed. I knew I couldn't count on tougher enemies at the south gate to scare them off...

It could have been worse. The first thing they did was send the rogue up the side of the crater to have a look around. It was only after he got back that I discoverd I'd given them the impression that the trail ended at the crater and didn't go around. Good thing for them, because that was just after I heard the wizard mention something about casting "Fly" :lol
