Re: ::bump::
I'd recommend swinging by a gaming store if you get a chance and thumbing through the Book of Vile Darkness. I don't know if anyone here's going to give you the full breakdown of an item from out of one of the books.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

Thrommel
Thrommel dominated Tarren and the lamasu, and then Naq heard the group outside the door. DC of 17 (15 for stone, +2 for distance), and she gets it. She awakes Hedrack, since she hears one of the PCs asking Varachan if this is where Hedrack sleeps, if he is sleeping, and Varachan saying he better be. Right as Varachan begins to explain how he will remain off-camera so as not to lose his position, Hedrack and Naq open the door.

"Is this treachery, Varachan?"- H
"Yes"-V
Then Thrommel attacks Naq. Then the party wizard goes, then Hedrack gets off a word of recall. The party cleric, Fillasteak, correctly identifies the spell, and asks Thrommel where Hedrack's sanctuary would be. Thrommel does not respond, and instead goes to gaseous form to immediately go to the Greater Temple. Varachan leads the rest of the entourage (lamasu, azer, elf paladin, Tarren and his bear, and the 6 PCs) to the Great Temple, running by the golems in the green goo in room 20.

When they get there, they see Thrommel beginning his attack on Hedrack. Now this is where things go a little loopy. I have a house rule that if you get a critical threat, and then get another critical threat on the proceeding "is-it-a-critical?" roll and it still hits, then the crit multiplier is increased by one. So rolling 2 20s would increase a X2 multiplier to a X3, etc. Well, Throm gets 3 20s and a 14 for his first attack, and then doesn't roll too bad for damage. Crap. So now Hedrack suddenly got really bad off really quick. Ohwell, it's ok for him, he's on the black circle. :D Naq, well, she's screwed.

As the group enters the room, the azer and Tarren's bear fail the fear checks and run weeping out of the room, wetting themselves. Party wizard decides to shoot a magic missle at Naq, at which I thanked my lucky stars, because Heddy woulda died right there. The party fighter, Wulgar, attacks Hedrack on the same initiative as Hedrack, 19. Now, Hedrack decides to split and leave to the Inner Fane, ditching Naq. The fighter is attacking. I didn't see anything requiring somatics or whatnot to activate the Black Circle, so I ruled that Hedrack instantaneously dissapeared at the beginning of initiative 19, and Wulgar's axe passed harmlessly through the air where he had once been. Does anyone think that I did this wrong? I honestly didn't do that just to save Hedrack, it's what I thought, but I'd just like to know if I'm wrong.

Wulgar uses his remaining attacks to kill Naq, and then pouts because Hedrack left. Tarren then goes, attacking Fillasteak, the party cleric. Fillasteak thinks Tarren is just being evil, saying "Don't do this," and attacking Tarren. Thrommel then dominates Wulgar on his turn, and all his minion's eyes begin to glow red. (This is a visual I've had for domination when Thrommel wants to show his control; The victims' and his eyes glow red.)
Seeing the turncoat nature of Thrommel, the party runs. Fast. Varachan runs to the Inner Fane in an attempt to convince Heddy and the DDs that he was dominated that whole time before Heddy kills him with the slave ring. The party follows, not knowing where Varachan is going, and he yells at them to "Get the hell out of here." They run all the way back out through the Air Door, tell the Air Bridge Complex people that some of the members of the Outer Fane are feuding, and then run off into the woods by Mt. Stalagos. They then go to bed.

Thrommel, of course, just wants to get his coffin out of there. IMC, there is a valve in Hedrack's chambers that opens a river around Throm's coffin. So Thrommel has his minions grab his coffin and carry it out of the Outer Fane for him. I'm thinking that he will dominate/slaughter most of the Air Bridge Complex on his way out. Does anyone see a problem with this?

Now, -what the heck is Hedrack going to do now?- who is he more concerned about, Varachan, Thrommel, or the party? Will he believe Varachan? (Bluff check says he does) I'm thinking he will cast discern lies, and that means the end of Varachan. Will the Inner Fane/Hedrack want to waste the manpower in getting Thrommel? Can they, if he just tries to flee, and not fight back? I'm using Andy Collin's variant for scrying rules, and so Hedrack will most likely not be able to scry on the party. (DC 20, he has no ranks)

Or could he use the master/slave ring to get the Spider-Eaters on the party quickly? That seems very likely.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, all the real combat action was about 2.5 rounds, with Thrommel doing most of the work. Scary.

I assumed that activating the Black Circle is a Standard Action which doesn't provoke an Attack of Opportunity. So, as long as Hedrack's dexterity is higher then that of Wulgar's then what you did was fine. However, if Wulgar's dexterity is higher then Hedrack's then the fighter should go first.

Nope. Its your campaign. If you want Thrommel the trash the Air Bridge Complex then that's your call. Although considering the warning given to the Air Bridge Complex by your PCS what's the chance they even try to stop Thrommel? They might just let him and his entourage leave with his coffin. Where is Thrommel going? Do you have an idea in mind?

Varachan: If the Bluff Check was successful then Hedrack may not be suspicious enough to cast divinations to prove, or disprove, Varachan's assertions.

Thrommel: A wild card but unless the vampire sets up shop in the CRM with plans of revenge then Hedrack has more important problems ... namely ...

Your PCs: These guys have the power to bypass his outer security (the CRM) and has the means to access his domain (the Outer Fane). If he has no way to track them (via scry, locate person, etc ..) then he's going to put the entire Outer Fane on high alert. He may even bring in survivors from the CRM to bolster his position. If available, he should use his Invisible Stalkers to track down your PCs and spy on them ... if you're sadistic you could send the Stalkers and the Dark Nagas as a team to hunt and kill your PCs while they rest .. volleys of 9th level fireballs cast by flying and intermittantly invisible nagas could be very dangerous; couple that with the melee strength of the always invisible Stalkers and you could have your PCs running for the lives.

Well Hedrack was ok there, thank goodness for Cat's Grace and altering NPC spell lists. :) Buff's are a cleric's saviour.

Given Thrommel's limitless dominate ability, I would think he would round up as much of the air bridge complex as he could for minions. Especially that chimera.....can anybody say "mount"? I suspect Thrommel will start heading to Verbobonc, actually. There he will attempt to wreak havoc upon his former home with his possible small army of minions. Wow, big creatures with low will saves are easy guns for a vampire. However, he may go to Hommlet, the reason for that being far more extensive.

Wulgar, the minotaur fighter, sold his soul to Orcus long ago. (We did this as a balance for his taking the Massive feat, which I ruled had much greater affects in bumping a creature from large to huge than it did for medium to large, which was what was intended. Now he is unable to be healed my magical means, and techinally his soul is still owned by Orcus.) IMC, Orcus is a literal shadow of his former self. He currently resides on the shadow plane of the negative material plane, hiding out, since everybody thinks he's dead for good this time. He is immensley weak, and is trying to regain power and return to his former glory. So far he has control over Wulgar and Cade, the party sorc. Cade wanted to take the Shade template in the Forgotten Realms book, and I ruled he could. Of course, the reason for his sudden transformation involved his being wisked away to the shadow negative material plane and transformed by Orcus into a Shade, yadda yadda. Oh, and Iuz is involved with Cade, too. I can relate the full story, if you want.
So now Orcus has a hand in Wulgar and Cade, and they are not fully aware of it. Now he has all he needs to regain power. How's he going to do this? In the Recovered Temple, when the party is doing the tango with Imix, Laereth, etc., Cade and Wulgar will become possesed by Orcus and will interrupt the "release Tharizdun" ritual. Cade will grab the Orb of Oblivion and jump into the swirling vortex thing. And here, through some wonderful magic thing, Tharizdun is not released, the Orb of Oblivion is shot into some random location in the multiverse, and Orcus is standing in full glory where the vortex was. Oh, and Cade is probably going to be disinegrated or something. And thus will begin a chronomancy heavy segment of the campaign.

I know that really reeks of railroading, especially setting things up so that one of the characters must die, but I am fairly certain that it will be well recieved. "Always make the players THINK they are in control."

So Thrommel may be willed by Orcus (His portfolio -is- undeath) to go hang around the Recovered Temple, where he can be of use to Orcus. FYI, this may make Orcus out to be powerful, but in reality he is very, very weak. This handful of mortals is the only thing he is capable of manipulating any more, and at great risk to himself.

As for Varachan, is bluff succeeded by +15, so I think he'll be fine. Hedrack officially does not care about Throm right now. So the Spider Eaters will begin immediately tracking the party, and he will send the nagas after them. The stalkers are dead.

Yes, I know it's not, officially. But it's not uncommon for D&D groups to make it a cleric spell, just to round out everything. We've done that, obviously. I suppose I should have mentioned that, sorry. :\ Man, it seems I've been relating a lot of house rules.
