Question on the Elemental Keys
This may be stupid but I can't find it answered anywhere in RttToEE; how do PCs devise the use of the elemental keys? It's stated that the information can be extracted from clerics and other powerful people, but are there any other means? Does and identify spell work and if so how much information does it reveal? In particular, how the hell to the PCs figure out the special phrases for all the keys?

Re: Question on the Elemental Keys
The keys are magic, so I'd say that an identify wouyld reveal that combined with other keys, it will open restricted areas.

The blessing phrase is not needed to open the doors, is it? That's just for avoiding gettting fried.

I'd let legend lore and divination reveal something, though, should the players think to ask.

As to the phrases, remember that the swords use the phrases as command words for their special ability, so I just made a point out of mentioning the phrase. Of course, if no one in your group speaks Aquan, Terran, Ignan or [Air], then they're a little up the creek.

...it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Re: Question on the Elemental Keys
IIRC the "blessing phrase" is spoken at the alter to the particular element and allows the speaker a 1 time access through that particular door into the Outer Fane.

Re: Question on the Elemental Keys
I think Siobharek is remembering a suggestion that I put out to help the players, which was to make the command phrases for the elemental swords special powers (which they do not give in the module) the same as the blessing phrase needed for the keys.

The players are more likely to hear the phrase from the sword being used against them in combat than they will of overhearing/seeing a blessing at the altar in action.

If you really want to use the clue bat, you could always have the phrase inscribed on the swords themselves (in whatever language is appropriate).
