Make RtoEE really EVIL!
I'm sure this has been started before, but I didn't see it at first glance and I wanted to share my mods... now that the players are finished with it.
First I expanded on the drow and underdark elements of the game, where there were roving parties of powerful drow bloodsisters and clerics of lolth that preyed on the temple and adventurers alike. Descritad (sp? the halfling rogue that was captured) was higher level... She made off with lots of the players gear. Also some of the players pissed me off by blantly using metagame thinking knowing she's a rogue and knowing that I LOVE rogues so they decided to camp separately from the rest of the party that didn't use metagame thinking, so the two that camped elsewhere were captured in their sleep by a party of drow fighter/lasher torture specialist/entertainers that used the PCs to entertain an audience of other drow and other cultists while the rest of the PCs desparately try to save the two that made the mistake of being caught.
Other changes:
-Tal Chamash (sp?) was a dust mephit advanced by HD and given more levels of rogue. He also rolled 18's in any stat I determined necessary... THAT was a battle that the party only survived due to the cleric in the group...
-Insanity score = full cleric levels + full doomdreamer levels. None of this mere 1/2 levels stuff... ('course it DID screw over their will saves a lot...)
-Expanded on the excavated nodes... Added the water nodes which was full of things like advanced by HD fiendish dire octopi, black dragons... mord's disjunction traps... Fiendish dire sharks...and UBER chill aura which was something like fort save DC 20 (+2 per previous check) each round or suffer -2 to everything (ability scores, skill checks, saves, attack and damage rolls), which made the purple robes of tharizdun a near requirement.
-The water node had the water prince: a water based planetouched (from a dragon mag, can't remember the name or issue number), plus half-water elemental template, 17 levels of cleric with 18's in wis and con, +5 inherent to wis and con and a toned down version of the paragon template where they get a mere +4 luck bonus to everything the paragon template gets +12 to.
-The purple worm in the recovered temple became an advanced by HD neothelid to colossal and had more powerful psionic powers...
(this one is something I add to all my campains):
All dragons that have caster levels can spontaniously cast ANY spell as a sorceror of their stated level, but they get to use their highest stat to determine save DCs, bonus spells per day, etc.

I'd be interested in your notes on the Water Node - I'm toying with the idea of including more of them for a long-term epic run-in with the old temple...

Insanity scores
How did the PC's deal with the higher insanity scores for the doomdreamers? This would make the save DC for the First's disintegrate and destruction spells DC 32, and Hedrack's DC 29, with a DC 27 greater command that could disable the whole party at once.
Brutal. We're just about to enter the CRM, and I'm already scared of what will happen when they hit Hedrack and the other nasty clerics. Lareth was a real wakeup call for the party--a 7th level cleric with nothing but a stick kills one PC and almost kills another.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station |

I generally ran the party at higher levels than the module was designed for, as I was always making things harder. I increased the available gp though lots of extra encounters with high level adventurer classes (who all had access to magic items and starting wealth of a PC of their level). 'course disintigrate spells also distroy all gear of the target in my campains. True resurections were rather common as soon as the party got teleport so they could get back to a large enough city to have a high enough level cleric to cast true res. Occasionally the party would kill of an NPC take their gear only to discover (a few days later) that the gear carried a powerful curse.
Actually the change to the insanity score was mostly due to one of my players who is obsessed with increasing his saves. He also tends to anoy all the other players until the first thing anything buys is increased cloaks of resistance and a luckstone, and enhancement bonuses to all save stats. I never limit magic items that the party can find, assuming they are in a big enough city. However I tell my players that if they increase their stats to the point where the stuff I throw at them is ineffective, they get less XP as they are not facing a challange. Then I perform dark rituals on my laptop and stuff gets a lot harder.
My group tends to do this a lot. One player in the group is always obsessed with his saves, another player is obsessed with his AC and another changes his obession depending on the character. I can't really complain as everyone in the group roleplays even more than they powergame.
As for my water node notes, I'll post them when I get my desktop working again.
